I wish I had been hungry enough for the tasting menu. It looked so good. Had the Mussel soup. It was vey good. Also had the lobster dinner and my husband had the steak. Both meals were excellent. I would dine here again.
Superb. I’ll definitely be back !
We celebrated a birthday on Easter Sunday and were really pleased with the food, service, and ambiance. We are from New Orleans and accustomed to high-quality white tablecloth dining and the Hartstone Inn exceeded our expectations. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The mussel soup was outstanding as were each of entree's (roast chicken, roast beef, and lobster Francesca). Save room for the wonderful desserts.
Lovely venue, caring staff, memorable meal.
Food was excellent. Service was outstanding. My only complaint is that our table was so close to another table that we may as well have been part of their party. It was hard to have a conversation with my wife. I ordered the rum raisin souffle and so did my wife. I never got mine. The dessert issue is not a big deal. I was not charged for it. I believe it that the hostess may not have heard me.
The Hartstone Inn is one of the finest places for a meal on the coast of Maine. I enjoyed my halibut main course and desert.
The value is especially good during an event such as Maine Restaurant Week.
Thank you for your review! We appreciate that our local neighbors appreciate us!
First, let me say - I am a tough rater. We went to Hartstone during Maine Restaurant Week. For a $35 three course meal I wasn't expecting much. How wrong I was. To criticize we had to be nit-picky - our waters were too long without refreshing; my husband wasn't asked if he wanted another cocktail; there was all the silver on the table when we arrived so it was sometimes in the way - see what I mean - nit-picky. The staff was pleasant, the food tasty, plenty and well prepared. We are currently looking for a convenient weekend to join Chef Michael in cooking class. If you're looking for a wonder dinner for a small group in a quaint location you won't go wrong at Hartstone.
Wonderful meal. Always wonderful when the chef serves meals and asks how everything is going.
I’ll be beck soon !!
Thank you! We look forward to having you dine with us again.
When we arrived, they did not have our reservation from Open Table. They with some time were able to seat us, but we were perplexed that they had not checked their open Table reservation. We were also dismayed to find that they do not accept American Express and they were quite terse about it saying that no one in Camden accepted American Express. This is not true and considering the level and expense of the restaurant and Inn, it seems neglectful not to accept American Express. It cheapened the experience.
However, the food was outstanding and the service was good, which is obviously the point of going to dine.
When leaving we noticed that they had an excellent happy hour with half priced drinks with a free appetizers. We will definitely try this next time. Our bill was close to $200 and when we looked closely, we saw that the gratuity was included but we had not been informed. We had added the gratuity to the final amount when we noticed this and had almost tipped double. They should have informed us they added tips which is unusual for a party of two.
Our winter evening visit to the Hartstone Inn was absolutely lovely. The dining room is small, the service was very personal and professional and the food was sublime - flavors and textures blending beautifully. The menu is not large, but the offerings cover lots of food groups. Check it out online, and if you see something you like, don't wait! The flavors and preparation belie the tiny Inn's footprint in town. Go, enjoy! We plan to go back as soon as we can.
Thank you for your kind words! See you soon.
The Hartstone is our "go to" restaurant. The food and wine is always excellent and the chef's tasting menu is unique and always a treat. The wait staff is attentive and our courses are always perfectly spaced.
We love being your "go to" restaurant! See you again soon:)
Dining at the Hartstone is a pleasant, welcome escape from the noise and rush of many restaurants. Always a pleasant time. The tasting menu is a treat, and the gingerbread soufflé was a 10.
Thank you for your review! We appreciate your kind words.
Extremely well-prepared fare. Top of the heap from a CIA trained chef. Worth every cent.
We always have terrific food at the Hartstone. This time I had the chefs menu and my wife had 2 excellent appetisers. We both finished with chocolate soufflés. WOW
We arrived for reservation on a not so busy night. No one was there to acknowledge us. There were some regulars sitting around said that they will flag down the host when they see her, never happened. Waited for 10 minutes and decided to go elsewhere.
We had a problem at first with a loud crow, so we were moved to another room.
The staff were gracious, friendly, knowledgeable and service was perfect.
The food was delicious and the dessert was scrumptious.
We would recommend on your travels to Camden or just passing by.
Exquisite food and quiet, cozy ambiance with superb service. Our very favorite restaurant in the area. Considering the gourmet quality and presentation of their food, the prices are a good value and the serving size is perfect - small compared to some restaurants but just right if you want to feel comfortably full versus overstuffed. We visit Maine for two weeks every fall and always make a reservation in advance for Hartstone Inn. This year we enjoyed the specialty cocktails during happy hour and the finale of a lovely shared dessert after dinner. The beef filet and seared haddock were delicious entree's. The Inn has several separate rooms in which to fine that are cozy, romantic and quiet for conversation. So overall a definite 5-star experience for our group of four.
The Hartstone is a wonderful restaurant with gourmet offerings and a great wine list. We consider the Hartstone to be our go to restaurant for special occasions as well as for a night of dining out.
The restaurant itself is located in the Inn - it is charming. Unfortunately I noted that it was our anniversary, and was hoping for a candle in our dessert, or some honorable mention, or romantic table by a fireplace. None of those things happened : (
I’ll preface this by saying we dine out A LOT in a variety of places from dive bar to high end. I NEVER feel compelled to write a review especially a negative one as I know sometimes places have off nights. I think my experience was bad because my expectations for Hartstone Inn were too high based on some of the reviews I read. This was the one “nice” dinner I planned while on our honeymoon. Really wanted a great experience. Instead, I found myself searching for a server after having sat for 15 minutes and not been greeted or served a glass of water. What was so strange is there were servers EVERYWHERE. It seemed like there was a ratio of one per table in the very small/uncrowded dining room. Yet we couldn’t find one to help us. Ordered lobster and corn chowder which was decent but nothing special. Ordered the halibut for dinner and it was horribly over cooked. Dry to the point of inedible. This is a cardinal sin cooking white fish! When there are only a very small number of options on the menu I feel like they should be well-executed. The rest of the food was fine but not memorable. We were looking for something quiet/romantic but found the atmosphere quiet to the point of uncomfortable. Like if we talked above a whisper we’d be bothering people. I will say other (older) guests seemed to be enjoying themselves and complimenting the servers on the food so again it may be my expectations were just off.
During a 3 night stay in the greater Camden area, we visited this B&B for dinner once and twice for happy hour. You are probably thinking A) the drinks must have been very good and inexpensive, or B) the food must have been creative, reasonably priced and delicious, or C) service in the bar, parlor and dining room must have been excellent or D) all of the above.
Those selecting option D "all of the above" are on the fast track to nirvana. I know you may still have some questions so let me furnish the delectable details.
There is a nightly happy hour that you may enjoy in the parlor, patio or at the bar. We sat in both the parlor and bar though on different nights. A choice of 9 signature cocktails, priced at $5 each, are offered with a complimentary tapa included. A total of 7 different cocktails were imbibed, my wife punched the raspberry mojito dance card twice while the others took to the floor but once though all were worthy of an encore. If I were having my last meal on on death row and was offered just one cocktail from Hartstone it would be the raspberry mojito.
Our meal, prepared by award-winning chef Michael Salmon, would likely satisfy a gourmand. The menu changes monthly with 4 entrees offered that cover most of the bases plus an interesting assortment of apps, salads and desserts are offered. We were served an amuse bouche and then shared a cantaloupe and prosciutto salad dressed with champagne vinaigrette that was both fresh and flavorful. A dollop of mint sorbet was then served that brightened our palates.
Although tempted by each entree, we both decided on pan seared halibut topped with charred lemon over a rosemary, olive oil, sundried tomato cous cous accompanied by charred bell peppers and zucchini. We will never know if this was the best choice that evening, but it did prove to be the best meal of our 7 night trip.
To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut, eat, drink and be merry at the Hartstone Inn because tomorrow you may be returning home.
Food, service and environment were excellent. Our party was just 2 people and the gratuity was included in the bill. While I was prepared to leave a tip of this amount as the evening justified it, I still find it presumptuous of the Inn to assume this.
This was our second experience at Hartstone. We were impressed the first time and we were not disappointed this time. Our steak and accompaniments were excellent, the hostess and waitstaff were very helpful and always smiling making for a very pleasant occasion for us. We will be back.
Superb. Souffle was the perfect ending
Great dinner with service that matched. We will be back for sure.
Wow! Perfect! Indescribably delicious; everything tastes as wonderful as it looks. We would return for any ONE of the five courses; the entire dinner is a scrumptious feast!
Lovely find from trip advisor. I had a crab cake for starters followed by a gorgeous lobster salad, and finished with a gran mariner souffle. Delicious.
Nice ambiance and friendly staff. Both the lobster corn chowder and the fish entree’s were Luke warm. I believe the plates needed to be warmed as they were cold and sucked the heat from the food. It spoiled the experience. A tip of 18% was automatically added fir a party of two, seemed desperate and common. The night before at Natalie’s was much more our style. I will avoid this place next time, it’s very touristy.
Very nice dinner with outstanding service. Food was good but didn't have the WOW factor for us.
Every year when we gathered in Maine for a week, we have dinner at this restaurant on August 2nd - this is our third year. The menu is sufficient to accommodate the variety of wishes of our party of 5-6 people, two of whom are foodies. Everybody has been pleased with what they ordered.
Service is very good and, the bonus is the ability to carry on a decent conversation without shouting and straining to hear what the other is saying. Hearthstone Inn is also appropriate should you have a romantic occasion to celebrate.
This is such a lovely restaurant in many ways. Set in the main floor of an old inn. Staff/service are courteous and knowledgeable. Food is delicious and fresh. Wine list is exceptional and incredibly low priced. The markups on bottles of wine are far below what you see at most restaurants. Our favorite dining experience while in Camden.
My lobster salad was a little rubbery, not like other fresh lobster I had in this area
It's a very small restaurant & the service was a bit spotty (no one to greet us at the door, etc.) but the food was outstanding. The chef brings each entree out of the kitchen himself, which was fun.
We had the 5 course tasting menu. It was all incredible
Chef's tasting menu was excellent in every way.
If you are a foodie, this restaurant is for you! Just fabulous!
Based on reviews from other diners, we tried the Hartstone at the last minute and delighted that we did. The food service and ambiance were terrific.
this is our favorite place to have dinner in Camden. Only thing missing is a view of the harbor but the quality of service and food make up for the lack of view.
We have had wonderful meals at Hartstone in the past and last night was an exception. Very disappointing from service to quality of food. They didn’t have the wine we ordered in stock and the grilled romaine salad was not.
It took so long to give our drink order, we discussed leaving and set the tone for the evening. We have had the chef tasting in the past, so may be better to stick with those options.
