Hart House Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This is a gem - beautiful tudor-style mansion on a lake with white table cloths and proper settings that is rare to find in Vancouver anymore. The atmosphere is rare to find at the same menu pricing as most restaurants. With views over the sprawling lawn and Deer Lake, the experience is hard to beat.
Try Sunday brunch --- lovely! Or sitting out on the patio in the sunshine - outstanding!
Quite disappointed in the Valentines Day set menu we had last night. I went with my wife and although the service and setting were at least worth 4 stars the food was only worth 2 stars. Hence my 3 star rating. Nothing really stood out as great food. When I pay $88.00 per person I expect GREAT food. Nothing was bad (sandy scallops might be the exception - but were cooked perfectly). The appetizers were kind of boring (the cornmeal "pancake" and arctic char combination was truly tasteless) . The oysters three ways were pretty decent (the cucumber oyster was boring). The shared truffle risotto plate was ok but nothing special, the flavour was dominated by the Parmesan, the smoked carrots got completely lost -(very oddly served too as a communal share plate with two small bread plates given to each person but no spoon to serve - we scooped it up with our forks). The beef dish was good (very small portions and no side) and the scallops were good save the beach hardware mentioned above (loved the little cauliflower breaded bites though),. The cheesecake and chocolate tart were very yummy and done well - definitely the high-point of the night.
While the restaurant itself is quite cute and clean, the service and food fall flat on its face in all regards. May be worth it if this was priced perhaps $30 cheaper per person. Considering this is not the case, I will review the restaurant at the price point they prescribed @ $185 before tip for two people. I will be only noting the notable dishes in this review. Anything not mentioned would be defined as average.
This price range and course descriptions suggests they are fine dining, they are anything but. Starting with service, it was lack luster throughout the meal with no dish descriptions, overly casual, not taking away dishes.
The table bread they serve tastes terrible, and served with hard cold butter... One of the first times in my life I didn't even manage to eat a single slice. Also the server never took away the bread that we were clearly not eating the entire meal.
Truffle risotto was more like carrot risotto. Truffles shaved rather than infused, but low quality truffles make it nearly undetectable. The truffles were further masked by the slightly under cooked carrots that made the dish too sweet and carrot like. Their first attempt was under seasoned and it was sent back. They tried again but now overly salty, but it was much improved. Very strange they decided that this would be a dish that came shared... This is extremely unusual for fine dining, and especially a savory dish. Maybe its a play on valentines day, but that presentation seemed more lazy than romantic.
Beef dish was very small (one tiny slice of beef), all the sides were basically untouched because they didn't really do anything for the palette.
Scallops were cooked nicely, but overly salted on top. Was biting through chunks of salt on the 4 scallops they served for the entree.
Desserts were a complete failure. Cheesecake had an awful taste, chocolate tart was too hard and too much caramel.
Just don't go. You can go to Hawksworth for similar cost.
This restaurant in a heritage home is an experience of its own. Someone greeting you at the door and checking your coat. Your glass never runs dry. The food was creative and delicious. The descriptions don’t do it justice. They don’t look like large portions but I was full at the end of my 3 courses from dine out Vancouver.
I haven't been to your restaurant in over a year and I recommended it to friends. The service was not very good. My friends wine was filled with sediment and when the waiter came over and it was pointed out he dismissed her by saying all good wine has it. Then he said he would bring her a little bit more. She declined and he brought it anyway. She declined again and then he put it on the table and said well one of you can drink it. The appetizers and main courses were all good but the portions on the desert was pitiful. Sadly, I will no longer be recommending your establishment.
I’ve always passed by the Hart House when I am around the Deer Lake Park, finally had the chance to dine in this place. Wow, the food is amazing! The portion is perfect filling, and the wine matching is just excellent.
Thank you to the staff who served us tonight!
This restaurant is close to where I live and is in a lovely setting. It is an old converted home and my husband and I like it a lot. It is located close to a small theatre and an art gallery which we sometimes attend so the restaurant is convenient for us. Food is always good, and the service is usually very good too. Lunch the other day was lovely.
Nice ambiance in this Tudor-style mansion. It was a cold and rainy evening when we dined. The fireplace near the main door was so inviting creating a warm atmosphere. Meal choices, include appetizers, mid course, main and three course fixed priced offerings. Menus are subject to change. We were two couples and everyone was pleased with their food choices from the mussels & clams appetizers, the braised lamb shank and seared scallops mains. Mid size portions, good flavours. This writer began with a Manhattan cocktail - not the best I have ever tasted as it was missing angostura bitters and a tart cherry. The noise level which was a bit high for being about 3/4's full. None-the-less, the venue is very pleasant with local history and we had a window table permitting a view down to Deer Lake. Good, attentive service. Will be back in the summer to sit outside on the patio.
Our mom celebrated her 90th birthday and the wait staff and special dessert were thoughtful and made the event memorable. Staff kept the event quiet and just for our table and didn’t bring undue attention to us which was perfect for mom. She didn’t want any hoopla around the event. Many thanks to everyone for their consideration and recognizing the event with a special dessert!
