Harry Browne's Ratings and Reviews
We were seated immediately and at the requested location. Service was responsive and patient. Entrees of filet mignon and rack of lamb were both excellent and cooked to order. Bar orders were provided and nicely complemented the meal. Wait staff were attentive without rushing and good humored. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, so thoroughly enjoyable dinner.
Harry Browne's can always be found on Annapolis Maryland's top ten restaurants, usually at the top. My wife and I love Harry Browne's for two reasons. First they have great food and a great wine list. We started off with a truly wonderful appetizer, small Nantucket scallops, available for few weeks each year. Those scallops were divine. My wife ordered their fabulous crab cakes which were served with a warm potato salad with a ground mustard sauce. While I dined on the Kona Rubbed Ribeye steak with spinach, blue cheese and bacon potato, just my kind of meal. From the extensive wine list, I selected the Latour Chardonnay since my wife ordered seafood, the gentlemanly thing to do since it was our 38th wedding anniversary.
The other reason we love Harry Browne's is because they have a sophisticated ambient interior. This isn't true of most restaurants in Annapolis, which have rather stark interiors with unfinished brick walls and ceilings with exposed beams and round heating ducts hanging down. I'm sure you know what I mean. Not Harry Browne's, they have an authentic late 1800's decorative gold tin ceiling, lit by several large unusual globe type chandeliers which display the signs of the zodiac a la the planet Saturn. In between the elevated sections of the main dining room, they feature beautiful cut and frosted glass partitions framed in dark mahogany mill work. These attractive partitions act as a divider between seating adding to the privacy to their tables. The dark green walls are ordained with large mirrors framed in beautiful gold acanthus leaf molding, each separated by large candle sconces. At the back of the main dining room is a large built-in curio, also constructed of dark mahogany mill work, glass and mirrors. If you don't think the interior design of a restaurant adds to your dining experience, then you have never been to Harry Browne's. Eating is more that just a treat for the palate, it can also be a treat for your eyes.
There was no bread to serve with the salads. This is inexcusable for a table cloth restaurant.
This is not a restaurant if you are on a tight schedule. The service is typically slow. The grilled chicken for the salad was not grilled but partially cooked and refrigerated and heated in the microwave - this is what you get at Subway. It's hit and miss with with food. Some menu items are good others are a disappointment.
Regrettably, the service was very slow. Our dinner for 4 took over 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. The restaurant was not crowded. There were several empty tables. Not everyone ordered 3 courses and no one ordered drinks or a complicated dish. The long wait did impact negatively our enjoyment of the food itself which was okay.
The ambiance is warm and inviting. The service is professional. The food is very good and worth the drive into Annapolis (unless you're lucky enough to live within walking distance). The menu offers a good variety of options, though the hands-down winner is the best cream of crab soup in the state of Maryland, so at that point one might as well say the best in the world.
We made our reservation in advance and arrive precisely on time. Instead of getting the table we reserved in the front of the restaurant by the window we were placed in the back of the place. We were told that the table we requested was unavailable, reserved for a couple who was celebrating their anniversary. THAT was US, or a serious disappointment since we were never informed of the table's unavailabilitty before arriving. The table we requested for our anniversary remained unfilled and was given to a person who arrived more than a half hour after we arrived. The meal-tuna dish I received was drab and overcook -a sad dish. The side dishes were unappetizing, on the greasy side. The only bright side was that our waiter who was attentive, helpful and very professional.
Harry Browne's seemed tired. The food was OK but I expect better than that from a resteraunt. Especially for steak which my wife had, go elsewhere. The squab that I had was interesting and well cooked. Service was excellent setting up the tables around us for lunch the next day should have waited until we left.
We have been several times and its usually a 3.5-4. Tonight the server Tony was rude and unwelcoming, not that uncommon for Harry Browns but he really laid it on thick. He never brought or offered bread and when we requested it, we received cold/dry bread. We each ordered 30+ dollar steaks, Tony never checked to see if they were cooked correctly and pretty much ignored us (it was not busy so cant be bc of that). My filet was drenched in a flavorless bbq sauce (thats not what the menu described but that is what it was) and my husbands rib eye was diner quality, really thin with no marbling. The empanada app crabmeat was really over mixed and was not lump (yes I know it Maryland but some places still try to get away with it) which made the crabmeat stringy and it just wasn’t good. The cream of crab soup is usually amazing but we didn’t get it this time which I regret since this will be the last time going there with so many other better options. I guess that is what you get when you make a last minute reservation and this was all that was available (for obvious reasons:-).
I have been a weekly lunch time customer bringing my clients for over 4 years. Loved the food and service. However Saturday Dec 2nd we had a dinner reservation for 6:30 made a week in advance to celebrate a special occasion with close friends. We arrived at 6:30 only to be told there were no tables despite our reservation and to go upstairs to the bar and they would call us when they had a table. The bar was packed, no seating. After 20 minutes we were able to flag a server that helped us get a drink. We waited over an hour for our reserved table. Once seated at 7:45 we had no waiter for 15 minutes. At 8:05 feeling embarrassed I went looking for someone to assist. I found the owner (Rusty?) shared my concerns and he assured me someone would be by soon. Waiter showed up asked for drinks and bread. Drinks arrived late at different times, never got the bread. Entrees were very late and mediocre. Owner never checked in to see how we were doing. Bill was close to $400 as expected. But never dreamed we would be treated so poorly at what was always one of our favorites. Client lunches will never be there again. Kathy Davis
When we arrived on time for our 6:30 reservation, we were told by the hostess that they were "running late" and she sent us upstairs to the crowded and extremely loud bar. The two bartenders were very busy and it took forever to get our drinks. We finally were brought down to our table at 7:30. The table was nice and the server was first rate. We had salads, crab cakes and the chicken with a nice bottle of wine. The food and atmosphere in the dining room were excellent, so the night ended up much better than it started.
We had a delightful Thanksgiving Dinner at Harry Browne's. The staff was cheerful and attentive even though they were working on the Holiday. We elected to order the turkey dinner to maintain tradition even though there were other limited choices on the menu. The dinner was excellent and we were not cooking all day in preparation.
We were visiting Annapolis and had an early concert that night. My husband's colleagues recommended this restaurant to us. We have eaten at a number of places before but somehow missed this one. The waiter informed us that the chef was Italian which you would not surmise from the name of the place. The restaurant has been there for 40 years. The food was very good, the service was excellent, they had a very nice wine list. We were too full for dessert but they had a great selection. We would recommend the place and we intend to eat there again in the future.
Good thing the flavor of the food was very good because the temperature our hot food was warm. Yet our waiter was quite timely with serving our dishes, meaning we didn’t wait long for our food. The crab soup is delicious. The lamb lollipops would have been excellent, if served hot but they were good. The wine was very good and the price was excellent. I would go again.
We LOVE coming here! It is one of our favorite restaurants in Annapolis. It is close to everything downtown, service is impeccable and everything on the menu is good. They rotate the menu seasonally, but have different menus for lunch, dinner, brunch... We come at least monthly to keep on trying new items.
This was my second time here. First time was not so great but I had a living social coupon for $50 off dinner for 2. This experience was much better in the food department. Service was a bit slower than the last time, our waiter seemed more attentive to other tables than ours.
