Harpoon Henry's Seafood Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Went with a friend visiting from Colorado. Dinner was Sunday evening and the restaurant was moderately busy. We got a table along the back windows overlooking the harbor and people walking along the marina looking at the Harbor Christmas lights, which are spectacular this year (2017). The menu has a reasonable price range. We thought the Alaskan Halibut at $35 was a little pricey for the occasion, so we settled for another special, a nicely prepared Petrale sole filet (around $18). The server was very attentive and courteous, and each course was delivered shortly after ordering. The only strange thing was that while we arrived on time for our reservation, the reception desk was vacant for at least five minutes after we arrived; but not a big deal really, because we were not in a hurry.
We arrived a few minutes before our reserved 6PM time. A waiter came, a short time after being seated and offered us drinks and took our dinner orders plus a bowl of soup as an appetizer. About 10 minutes later, another waiter came and said the first waiter went home sick, but he would take care of us and would check on our order. At about 6:30, I inquired about our soup order and was told our dinners and soup order never got placed so we reordered. We asked for and got bread to tide us over and when the soup and dinners finally arrived, they were very good. Our waiter then indicated our meal was on the house to make up for the delays. I appreciated the consideration and plan to return.
The manager was god awful! We asked that the table umbrella being moved so that we could loom at our children while we were having dinner and the manager refused!
The umbrella was portable and there was no reason as to why the umbrella could not be moved??
What I did not appreciate was that the manager was sitting at the bar having cocktails while on the clock and refused to discuss the issue with me! The waiter insisted the manager was too busy but yet I could see him
Sitting at the bar the entire time we were having dinner.
The bar was packed and noisy for happy hour so we were pleased to go to the restaurant for a much quieter and better experience. 3 of 4 of us had the calamari which is delicious! Huge portion. Enough to have leftovers for a full lunch the next day. Waitress was attentive and very nice. Overall a good evening.
I went For lunch. I had requested outside. When I arrive they could not find my reservation. Then They said no reservations for outside.Since it was not such a nice day I said fine I’ll eat inside. Inside was full and I would have to wait. So I walked outside no one seated me and I was told to pick a seat. I sat down on a padded bench and after about five minutes my behind was soaking wet. Another lady next to me had the same problem. Four others came in Sat down got wet and left. I explain this to two different waiters and asked them to tell the managers the entire bench was wet . I later saw the manager and no one had told her. Although I was visibly wet no one offered me anything. No towels no complimentary drink.
The New England clam chowder was tasty with nice pieces of clam celery potato and good herbs and the calamari steak sliced in strips was very good. Unfortunately the menu inside has not changed in years, much of it being offered outside as well.
Made a reservation for 11am after our "Terrifying-10" mile race in Dana Point. We weren't sure if they were going to be real busy so we figured a reservation was the way to go. We got there at 10:15am. A little early because we were starving. They were not busy at all (they had just opened) so they were able to seat us. Our waiter was great. Nice, friendly, gave us extra muffins lol. We had a window seat next to the marina. Very laid back atmosphere which is what we needed since we were both so sore from the run. The bar was actually more crowded than the restaurant (Sunday football). I'd love to watch football in the bar. Energetic crowd in the bar. I ordered the filet mignon eggs benedict and my bf had the eggs benedict with the avocado. Both were soooo yummy. Absolutely amazing. My filet was better than his, but honestly both were awesome!! He ended up stealing my second one (they come as 2 pieces) and I boxed his second one to take home. I would definitely come back. I'd like to try lunch next :0)
Harpoon Henry's never fails.....the outstanding view and delicious food are so well worth the visit to the harbor. Try the fish and chips, or a shrimp dish, you won't be disappointed. The service is always excellent, they have a staff of young and energetic servers that are attentive, but not overly so. The best part is that for birthdays, they give a FREE HUGE slab of scrumptious mud pie that is enough for 3 diners.
Good for seafood and ambiance - the front room can be a bit loud especially when the band is playing, but you can sit in the back and look out on the marina. Nice place, good staff. If it's after 4pm, try parking at the nearby lot across the way - much less crowded and no permit needed from 4pm-2am.
We were greeted with a genuine smile and warm welcome from the hostess. She asked all the right questions about why we were there and then did simply everything to make us comfortable. True to her word she did everything we asked. It was a wonderful experience and I would go back again and again.
Service was prompt but not pushy, the waiter was all smiles and was eager to please. The food was just great, mahi mahi and sea bass. It was cooked perfect and was hot, not just warm but hot. Love that!!
The bar and bartender was just as great with lots of smiles and fun conversation. The alcohol content was just what you would expect, not too light nor too strong.
Do yourself a favor and go to Harpoon Henrys, you wont be sorry. The value was exceptional.
Nice harbor setting. Have been for dinner in dining room and bar, both of which were satisfactory, the high point being the waterfront setting. This time we went for breakfast. The service was poor. We had to return to the maitre de to get initial service just for coffee. We both chose eggs Benedict. The eggs were overlooked and the Hollindaise sauce gel like. There seemed to be a lack of servers, but many management hanging around. Prices for the selections were fair. Too bad the quality of food and service was so poor.
What a pleasant and beautiful setting for a special luncheon. The menu has plenty of variety and it was well received by the participants. The service was particularly noteworthy as the waitress seemed to have a sixth sense about timing. All most enjoyable.
Enjoyed my daughter's birthday. The waitress was excellent, friendly and answered all questions we needed.
I personally love Harpoon Henry's and I have been coming there since I worked at San Onofre in 1982. I now have my family close and we really enjoy the food, ambiance and service. Beautiful Harbor as well.
'the only real problems with Harpoon Henry's is that each time visit, the menu seems to get smaller and smaller. Also, with such a great view, it's unfortunate that they don't have any outdoor seating, either ground level or elevated. Since I'm writing, there is one other thing; the music you book is, at least to me, consistently awful. Guitar players who can't play or sing, that lounge lizard, Phil whoever is someone you'd find at a cheap cheesy lounge near, but not on, the Las Vegas strip. I've got some musicians I could recommend to you that are far better than anything I've seen there. There is one exception; very occasionally you book a sax player who is good. He, unfortunately, is very much the exception to the rest of your performers.
Here are my opinion:
Food Quality very good
Service very good
Proportion Size: EXTREMLY POOR FOR PRICE; Two tiny and skinny Asparagus, that is size you get for $29+ dinner plate. If I didn't make a remark to shift manager that vegetable you and small 1/2 cup of cooked wild rice and seared Ahi steak ,ok maybe 6 oz.
Not a great value or acceptable for price
All was a great experience, we were even given a Birthday Mud Pie to share for Birthday gal. My one complaint would be the Turkey Club sandwich...at such a steep price - it was hard to believe a full staffed restaurant still uses thinly sliced "processed" turkey slices instead of REAL carved Turkey slices. And very few at that.
That is so 20th Century Subway Sandwhich style. Most restaurants (not fast food) we frequent in OC that serve expensive (or not) lunch sandwiches all use REAL thicker carved Turkey meat now if they offer it. I think it's past time for this restaurant to get on board. I certainly won't order it again or recommend.
Our server only dropped off 4 menus for seven people and when asked for more, she said she didn't have any. Luckily another server brought some over. Then we ordered bottomless mimosas but when I asked for more orange juice for mine, she said she didn't think it was included?? How is it a mimosa then? When my boyfriend asked what she would recommend, she answered, I don't know? This was supposed to be a special brunch for Father's Day and instead we were all made to feel uncomfortable. Disappointing...
