Harpoon Henry's Seafood Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I used online reservation and it worked fine. There was a rather large crowd waiting in line for seating at a table in the bar area. But with my reservation I was seated immediately in the more formal dining area. That costs a little more but it is worth it.
Hostess distracted when arrived - took awhile to greet. Seated us and left. Young man taking order was ok, but no clue about order of service or how to serve wine. Brought food almost instantly and it was halfway through before wine arrived. Same waiter tried to open bottle of wine for nearby table and so inexperienced he slipped and broke glass - not even enough common sense to clean up glass.
A bunch of young people just chatting and cutting up, not helping each other or training May have been shift change? Bar tender was non existent until his friends showed up,
Very poorly managed!
We've been at this restaurant a few times now and every time it doesn't feel like they have the air conditioner on. They are surrounded by windows with the sun coming in most of the day. Some of the shades on the windows don't pull down far enough to block the hot sun. It was quite warm in there.
I have been to Harpoon Henry ‘s numerous times. They used to serve outstanding sourdough bread and amazing white clam chowder (it is now gray and salty). The petite filet with soup was mediocre, at best. Sadly, we won’t be going back. The server was fine. The restaurant needs updating.
We arrived for our reservation on time to celebrate my husbands birthday. The hostess took us to our table and rudely informed us that we would only be allowed to stay for 90 minutes because they had other reservations coming in at that time. The food was overcooked, but cold. We opted to skip desert in order to vacate the table within the allotted time we were given. Our waiter was great, but other than that, we had a very poor experience and do not plan to ever return.
Scott was our waiter and he was excellent...we did not get the name of the server but he moved a chair at the table in front of us before a big group came so our view of the boat parade would not be obstructed, what a nice gesture! The ciopinno and Atlantic salmon dishes were excellent; the chowder was good but a bit too salty.
Beautiful view on Dana Point Harbor.
We were there for the Christmas boat parade and the place was packed. The service was a little slow as a result, but the waitress was cheerful and pleasant. The food was Not spectacular but ok. It is worth overlooking quite a bit for the view
Went with a friend visiting from Colorado. Dinner was Sunday evening and the restaurant was moderately busy. We got a table along the back windows overlooking the harbor and people walking along the marina looking at the Harbor Christmas lights, which are spectacular this year (2017). The menu has a reasonable price range. We thought the Alaskan Halibut at $35 was a little pricey for the occasion, so we settled for another special, a nicely prepared Petrale sole filet (around $18). The server was very attentive and courteous, and each course was delivered shortly after ordering. The only strange thing was that while we arrived on time for our reservation, the reception desk was vacant for at least five minutes after we arrived; but not a big deal really, because we were not in a hurry.
We arrived a few minutes before our reserved 6PM time. A waiter came, a short time after being seated and offered us drinks and took our dinner orders plus a bowl of soup as an appetizer. About 10 minutes later, another waiter came and said the first waiter went home sick, but he would take care of us and would check on our order. At about 6:30, I inquired about our soup order and was told our dinners and soup order never got placed so we reordered. We asked for and got bread to tide us over and when the soup and dinners finally arrived, they were very good. Our waiter then indicated our meal was on the house to make up for the delays. I appreciated the consideration and plan to return.
The manager was god awful! We asked that the table umbrella being moved so that we could loom at our children while we were having dinner and the manager refused!
The umbrella was portable and there was no reason as to why the umbrella could not be moved??
What I did not appreciate was that the manager was sitting at the bar having cocktails while on the clock and refused to discuss the issue with me! The waiter insisted the manager was too busy but yet I could see him
Sitting at the bar the entire time we were having dinner.
The bar was packed and noisy for happy hour so we were pleased to go to the restaurant for a much quieter and better experience. 3 of 4 of us had the calamari which is delicious! Huge portion. Enough to have leftovers for a full lunch the next day. Waitress was attentive and very nice. Overall a good evening.
I went For lunch. I had requested outside. When I arrive they could not find my reservation. Then They said no reservations for outside.Since it was not such a nice day I said fine I’ll eat inside. Inside was full and I would have to wait. So I walked outside no one seated me and I was told to pick a seat. I sat down on a padded bench and after about five minutes my behind was soaking wet. Another lady next to me had the same problem. Four others came in Sat down got wet and left. I explain this to two different waiters and asked them to tell the managers the entire bench was wet . I later saw the manager and no one had told her. Although I was visibly wet no one offered me anything. No towels no complimentary drink.
The New England clam chowder was tasty with nice pieces of clam celery potato and good herbs and the calamari steak sliced in strips was very good. Unfortunately the menu inside has not changed in years, much of it being offered outside as well.
Made a reservation for 11am after our "Terrifying-10" mile race in Dana Point. We weren't sure if they were going to be real busy so we figured a reservation was the way to go. We got there at 10:15am. A little early because we were starving. They were not busy at all (they had just opened) so they were able to seat us. Our waiter was great. Nice, friendly, gave us extra muffins lol. We had a window seat next to the marina. Very laid back atmosphere which is what we needed since we were both so sore from the run. The bar was actually more crowded than the restaurant (Sunday football). I'd love to watch football in the bar. Energetic crowd in the bar. I ordered the filet mignon eggs benedict and my bf had the eggs benedict with the avocado. Both were soooo yummy. Absolutely amazing. My filet was better than his, but honestly both were awesome!! He ended up stealing my second one (they come as 2 pieces) and I boxed his second one to take home. I would definitely come back. I'd like to try lunch next :0)
Harpoon Henry's never fails.....the outstanding view and delicious food are so well worth the visit to the harbor. Try the fish and chips, or a shrimp dish, you won't be disappointed. The service is always excellent, they have a staff of young and energetic servers that are attentive, but not overly so. The best part is that for birthdays, they give a FREE HUGE slab of scrumptious mud pie that is enough for 3 diners.
Good for seafood and ambiance - the front room can be a bit loud especially when the band is playing, but you can sit in the back and look out on the marina. Nice place, good staff. If it's after 4pm, try parking at the nearby lot across the way - much less crowded and no permit needed from 4pm-2am.
We were greeted with a genuine smile and warm welcome from the hostess. She asked all the right questions about why we were there and then did simply everything to make us comfortable. True to her word she did everything we asked. It was a wonderful experience and I would go back again and again.
Service was prompt but not pushy, the waiter was all smiles and was eager to please. The food was just great, mahi mahi and sea bass. It was cooked perfect and was hot, not just warm but hot. Love that!!
The bar and bartender was just as great with lots of smiles and fun conversation. The alcohol content was just what you would expect, not too light nor too strong.
Do yourself a favor and go to Harpoon Henrys, you wont be sorry. The value was exceptional.
Nice harbor setting. Have been for dinner in dining room and bar, both of which were satisfactory, the high point being the waterfront setting. This time we went for breakfast. The service was poor. We had to return to the maitre de to get initial service just for coffee. We both chose eggs Benedict. The eggs were overlooked and the Hollindaise sauce gel like. There seemed to be a lack of servers, but many management hanging around. Prices for the selections were fair. Too bad the quality of food and service was so poor.
