Harper's Table in Suffolk, Virginia serves up Southern favorites in a contemporary setting with a few modern twists for good measure. There is a complete wine list here to choose from as well as a number of craft beers and other spirits used to make specialty cocktails. To begin your meal at Harper's Table, try the fried liberty duck tongues, roasted Indian rock oysters or the warm olives. The fried oyster taco is also a huge hit.
For your main course at Harper's Table, you cant go wrong with the jumbo lump blue crab cakes. The baby back ribs and crispy fried flounder will do nicely, too.
The food is excellent, the portions are appropriate and it is not the usual fare you see in many restaurants. Whenever possible ingredients are sourced locally and as a result the menu reflects seasonal changes. Although the meats are great for me the strength in the menu starts with the vegetable preparation. If you like bourbon Harper's Table has an outstanding selection. The service is exceptional. As a local restaurant I am often surprised to see people from outside of the Suffolk area enjoying the dining at Harper's Table. It is worth the travel time!
Really outstanding food and service. Very informal but the food was anything but. Good selection from start to finish with great sides and desserts. We were really surprised to find such a top notch restaurant in old town Suffolk. We'll definitely return.
I like this restaurant very much. I've been there many times & I am never disappointed. Friendly staff. Great food.
A casual place with anything but casual food. Excellent and inventive takes on American cusine
We joined the gang at HT on anther Family Fridays dinner. Christina was wonderful as usual and everyone always has smiles on their faces, creating a great dining experience for everyone. It's so nice to go to Allan's where you're more than just another patron. And Chef Harper always prepares dishes that are to die for! The only problem...it's hard to choose. Anyone that has not dined here is truly missing out on something special!
Great food, great service, great cocktails. Best in the Tidewater.
The food and service was excellent. The noise level is too high for intimate conversation. Next time we will request a booth as our table was a bit tiny as well.
Unique twist on southern food.
This may be the best restaurant in this entire metro area. The food is fabulous, innovative and wonderfully prepared. The wait staff gets the rhythm of showing up just in time; we never felt rushed or neglected. The ambiance is simple but quiet and lovely. It is located in downtown Suffolk, a very old area down on its luck. That wouldn't dissuade me from going. Prices not too bad. My wife and I ate for about $110 including one drink apiece and tip. Well worth it.
Another fabulous night at a great restaurant... Thank you Gary and Chef Harper!
Very nice portion sizes and variety...at our table we had pork and polenta, and shrimp and grits, flounder entre, bbq platter, seared scallops, and pork chops...all were well received...yum
This is a must try for any Suffolk local or just visiting. The food is absolutly and consistently delicious. The service is friendly and quick. The restaurant is also very clean and well kept with a bery nice vintage look to it. Again the food is awesome everything ive tried has been superb.
A great dining experience from beginning to end! We had a reservation and our table was waiting. I enjoyed their version of a Manhattan while my wife had a glass of wine. Appetizers of beet, apple, and fresh greens salad and "Tommy's Clams" set the stage for main courses of seared scallops with pumpkin puree for my wife and shrimp and grits for me. Our desserts were Pot de Creme au Chocolat and Brown Butter Cake with fresh apples, sorbet, and bourbon caramel sauce.
To the extent possible, everything is fresh, local, and house-made, right down to the butter for the bread. The greens in the salad were flawless, as if each leaf were hand selected. The plating of the desserts was artful but not pretentious.
This was a dining experience well worth repeating.
The food is fresh and local and Chef Harper has a magic touch that transforms even the humblest ingredients into gourmet offerings! Imagine simple spinach mingled with shallots, garlic, ginger, and chili, then surrounded in buttery goodness.... Or mayonnaise kicked up a notch with roasted shallots and hot sauce.... Or the best hamburger ever.... Really! I would not have imagined ordering a hamburger at an upscale restaurant with tenderloin, oysters, smoked duck, venison, and other elegant items on the menu. But, at another guests recommendation, I did. Trying it, at least, once is a must! The beef is local and Harper grinds it himself with a perfect ratio of beef to fat. Then, he even makes homemade hamburger rolls!
Both the red and the white wines we had were outstanding!
We finished the dinner with a scoop of white chocolate ice cream--one unique flavor among several he offers. The next time, we will save room for one of his even more decadent desserts!
Had a very nice time. Lived up to the hype. Not crowded at all the night we went (early) so it was very quiet.
I was looking forward to taking my wife to HT but we were disappointed. The menu was really limited and unless you are a meat eater you wouldn't have much to choose from. I also thought it was pricey for what you get. We had no drinks except water, 2 soups, 1 salad, 1 appitizer and 1 desert and it came to $67.00 that was without tip.
I visited Harper's Table for a birthday dinner, and was wonderfully surprised! Good service, excellent food (especially the barbecue, hush puppies, and as gratin potatoes! Harper's Table is a secret gem in Downtown Suffolk.
We had been to HT before and enjoyed it. Brought another couple and had 7:30 reservations. After waiting 15 min for a table , we were seated in the bar at a table with another foursome. They were lovely, but would have preferred to have our own table. We waited quite a while for the waitstaff to come over to order drinks, and then quite a bit of time to get them. I enjoyed my dinner (fried oyster taco) but my husband found his (pork steak) to be dry and tough. We ordered additional drinks with dinner, but they did not arrive until after we had finished. The assistant manager was very accommodating and sent us each a small glass of wine gratis. In their defense the restaurant was vey busy, but there was not enough waitstaff to take care of the crowds.
We recently moved from Chesapeake to Suffolk and were looking for a special place to go to dinner for our 39th anniversary. My wife found Harper's Table through Open Table; the reviews sounded very good and it was close so we made our reservations. We were not disappointed. Service was quick and friendly. The wine and beer list was extensive and I am not very experienced in picking out wines, but the waitress listened to our likes and dislikes and picked out the perfect wine for us. We each had a salad which was crisp and fresh. I had the special which was absolutely delicious. My wife had the crab cakes which she said were very good, but could use a little more spice. Very good overall.
My husband and I took a trip from Poquoson to Suffolk based on the buzz from my co-workers about Harper's Table, it was a trip well taken. From the minute we walked in the door we knew we were in for a treat. After being greeted by the beautiful hostess and seated, we were never left waiting or wanting. Our waitress, Christina, another beauty, was exceptional. She was well versed in the bar and food menus, able to break down the construction of each culinary delight while providing tidbits about the Chef and his goal to use local foods and homegrown herbs. Everything, from the beverages, the appetizers, the main course, the peach cobbler and, let's not forget the incredible cornbread with homemade butter, was awesome!
The Chef made a point of greeting us at our table and thanking us for making the trip from Poquoson, as did other staff members, a nod to Gary.
We will certainly make this trip again!
See y'all soon!
My son and I, had dinner at Harper's Table on August 29.It was our third visit, and we did enjoy our dinner very much. The service was very good, and over all it was a good experience in dining.
I would like to mention that the only drawback are the chairs. They are not very comfortable.I am certain that the owners could remedy this inconvenience for the diners.
The staff...warm and inviting; the atmosphere...rustic and elegant; the food...exceptional! Harper's Table will easily become your "go-to-spot" after the initial dining experience. Kudos to Chef Harper for a job well-done!
Love this place! Food is excellent, service is fantastic and management is involved.
The resteraunt was very busy while we were there. Love the food but the wait was a little long!
The chef, Harper, is outstanding. He easily accommodated me as a vegetarian and made something off the menu. I have been three times and each dish is completely different from the others. This last visit he made this amazing fermentated carrot sauce that I literally could have put in a bowl and eaten by itself with a spoon. The food always has complex layers of flavors and is very original. The meals here are the best I've ever had and Harper's Table is easily one of the best Hampton Roads has to offer. Our server Christina (I think that is her name) goes above and beyond to make guests comfortable and happy. She is the best server I've ever experienced. I can't say enough about how much I love it here!
We found Suffolk, VA several years ago while looking for a town to spend the night in while traveling from Wilmington, DE to Wrightsville Beach, NC. The best thing we found in Suffolk was Harper's Table. We've now broken up our summer trip three times in Suffolk just so we can have dinner there. The food is wonderfully seasonal and locally-sourced and the preparation is outstanding. The service has been perfect each time. There's an attractive bar with a great wine list and interesting, delicious cocktails. I cannot recommend Harper's Table highly enough. Find a reason to visit Suffolk and this fantastic restaurant.
A wonderful discovery, thanks to Open Table. Service was outstanding! Interesting, creative dishes. Pleasant atmosphere and outstanding corn bread! I'd go back in a heartbeat!
Christina, one of the servers, is most professional. She makes you feel welcomed and is knowledgeable about what she serves. She is such an asset to the establishment. She is the consummate professional.
ALWAYS worth the drive from Hampton to Harper's Table. The food is consistently fantastic and even when they make changes to the menu, I'm never disappointed. The only thing that keeps me from visiting daily is my wallet :)
The Chef is from another well know restaurant in the region and has done another great job of providing local cuisine with a unique flare. Job well done and would suggest anyone who is looking for some thing a little different at a reasonable price point should give this Suffolk Gem a try...
Everyone will feel welcomed to this cool, hip restaurant in downtown Suffolk. It's casual but has the most wonderful food. Harper, the owner-chef, knows how to use local ingredients to great advantage, turning out dishes with a Southern twist.
Food & service were fantastic. Pork belly biscuits to die for. Waitress had a great sense of humor & made our experience very enjoyable.
Was not expecting much, and from the outside not much to look at. Inside however the food was very good as were the drinks and the service.
In every respect, a gem hidden in downtown Suffolk!
This was our first time at HT, and it won't be our last! Everything was delicious. I had the mackerel and shrimp and my husband had the pork steak. Let me just say that pork steak (I stole a couple of bites) was the most tender piece of pork I have ever had. My fish was perfect as well. Oh and we had the strawberry/rhubarb crumble with lavender ice-cream, heaven!
Great atmosphere. Romantic lighting. Delicious food. A little pricy, but definitely worth it. Magnificent dinner date destination.
Brought my out-of-town parents to HT for dinner and they were so impressed. I had raved about the burgers so they both orders burgers and my dad said he'll never want to eat any one else's burger again because HT's burger was so amazing. That says a lot right there! I had their special of handmade pasta stuffed with ricotta and served with oyster chicken and it is now one of my favorite HT dishes, ever. We love going to HT and really enjoy the service just as much as the delicious food.
The service and food were great! Especially noteworthy was the soft shell crab taco appetizer.
Dining out has recently become a challenge for me. My doctor recently told me to avoid wheat, corn, nuts, soy and dairy products. The entire staff at Harper's Table went out of their way to assure that I was able eat an excellent meal and not compromise my requests.
The spring vegetable and blue crab salad was fantastic, every forkful melted in my mouth!
I will definitely return to Harper's Table and hopefully my food restrictions will be lifted so that I may enjoy the full offerings on the menu.
Unusual and eclectic menu with a Southern emphasis- better than the other steak focused restaurants around Suffolk.. Very helpful, cheerful and attentive service.
Good variety in wine/beer, appetizers, salads and entrees
