VERRRY SLOW SERVICE! We were first reservation and took 45 minutes to get one round of drinks.
Went for drinks which are always amazing
Worst service I’ve experienced in DC. The host was very rude, and our drinks never arrived after more than 20 mins, we decided to leave.
Lamb and fish tacos were delicious!
Great spot. Great drinks. Great ambiance. Music could be quieter
This is a speak-easy, complete with hidden entrance - for quiet conversation, great and creative cocktails, good beer, and nice food. We've been there multiple times since it opened and keep going back - highly recommended for ambiance and good conversation - don't go if you want bustling people watching, obtrusive music, or big portions of food. It is a genuine hidden gem.
Long-time friend get together
Once seated, it took 3 hours to order 3 appetizers and 1 round of drinks. No water refills, and a waiter never came back for another order of drinks. It was also way too expensive for the value. There were cocktails on the menu for over 25 dollars. That’s such a rip off. Will never be going back.
Unfortunately, the last two times we have been to Harold Black, we have had sub-par service. This last time we went it took us so long to get our drinks we couldn’t order as many as we wanted before we left. We shared a taster - 5 half drinks, and would have liked to get a full drink after that. We also asked for nothing smoky, and said we preferred whiskey/bourbon. The first drink they gave us was a smoky mezcal drink - they did acknowledge this mistake when we reminded them, but of all 5 tasters, not one was bourbon or whiskey. The time before that, we sat at the bar and still had slow service.
Service agonizingly slow. Got some attitude for being late for reservation but given a table. Forced to cash out for later reservation that never showed up. Good food and drink but high priced
Poor service long wait for first drink. Over 30 minutes.
The drinks were OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive! If you want to charge $28 for a cocktail you have to be offering something else as well. I mean speakeasies are supposed to be fun and the whole time all I coukd think was how expensive it was - we got one drink and left.
Drinks and presentation are excellent. Only thing, staff have apparently have a very loose dress code which took a little away from the old school speakeasy feel. Unlike others "the Gibson... PX. , but they were very pleasant and knowledgeable. I would still recommend.
Great place...highly recommended. 1920s speak easy vibe. Mocktails were amazing
We had a reservation and still waited to be seated. It was so dark that we could barely read the menu. We ordered an appetizer and 2 main dishes but all the food came out at the same time. The food and drinks were pretty good but overpriced for the portions. I was excited about the concept of the speakeasy, but there wasn't anything special about it. We went for my husband's birthday which the server knew but we were basically ignored once she took our order. The staff was not very friendly and overall we were disappointed. There are so many better options in the area.
Min is always a great bar tending host!
Location is fairly easy to find. We had a reservation so my friend and I knocked on the wooden door and about 10 minutes later, a hostess opened it, looked straight past us and proceeded to assist the people behind us. She then let in the people behind us and shut the door in our face saying she’d be with us in a few minutes. When she finally did let us in, we were told we’d be given a booth but we’d have to move to the bar as soon as some seats opened up. Each of of the 1 drunk a piece that we got were over 20 dollars, incredibly small, and terrible. I am not a hard person to please but the employees at Harold Black were only accommodating after we said we’d like to get our checks so we could leave. The bar itself is fantastic, 10/10 on decor, but the people working truly ruined what could have easily been a wonderful experience.
We loved everything about this place. The ambiance way super cool, the service was great and the drinks were delicious. What more could you ask for.
Harold Black recently changed their prices. Their drinks usually spanned between 12-14 dollars. Now a drink I used to pay 14 bucks is 19 and there are drinks on the menu for 30 bucks.
I still believe that Harold Black is the best bar I've been to in DC. It oozes character, but these new prices kind of changed the ambiance. It went from this really cool down to earth spot were you could get crafted cockails for a very modest fee to something that is now a bit bougie. I wouldn't say it's my scent to drink at places where the majority of drinks are between 16 - 30 bucks. It's just not my vibe. Because of the prices it's also no longer a 'chill' place to bring a first date - but with these prices its now more of a 'Special Occasion Bar'
I'll still go to HB, but not as often as I used to. They are always busy, so perhaps that's why they changed the prices. I wouldn't say that the aren't worth the prices - perhaps they are -but it's make HB lose a bit of that sparkle. It's no longer "the best dam cocktail you've ever spent 12-14 bucks on."
Pretentious. Drinks were decent but many other options in the area. Took forever to get service. Hosts made almost a show of making people wait outside the sliding door. Had been curious to check it out but can’t see myself returning.
Loved the location and atmosphere! That’s about it. Cocktails overpriced, service was severely lacking.
Extremely underwhelmed. Service was terrible. We were seated and then promptly forgotten. We had to get up from our table to locate a server. When the server arrived there was no greeting, no asking what we liked, no walking us thru the menu. Instead he just asked what we wanted. I expect more from a speakeasy, especially when we are buying $24 cocktails.
There was also a lot of noise. Music was on but at such a low level that it didn’t mask any of the conversation from the surrounding tables.
It's a fantastic out of the way spot with great cocktails and atmosphere. I appreciate that it's a chill and quite out of the way spot. The bartenders were also very knowledgeable and attentive.
Overall, it was not a pleasant experience. We arrived at 9:22 for a 9:30 reservation and were not seated till after 10:00. The people working appeared to be making their best efforts but it took awhile just to get our order in. We ordered one round of drinks which were very good but overpriced. Unfortunately, it took a significant amount of time for anyone to check on us so we just asked for the check and left after one drink. Overall, it’s a cool place but it just wasn’t really operated correctly this particular night. I had been to this location before and it was during the winter and it was empty so it made things much easier on the staff.
Four thumbs up! Great speak-easy atmosphere with superb craft drinks and delicious bites. We keep coming back and it never gets old. Well done!
Took 45 minutes to receive our first round of drinks. Staff wasn’t even apologetic. Have always had a nice experience before, but this time is was pretty bad, especially because we had a reservation for a birthday.
Lovely setting. Great food and drinks. Service was off their game during our visit, (our first order of drinks didn't arrive until after we had finished eating dinner there), but it was slammed for the holiday, and the staff went the extra mile to attend to our table afterwards. They even gave us a complimentary round of drinks. Great folks.
We had a better experience last time in the winter. This place has a great vibe when it's dark. When it is lighter outside, it loses some mystique. Our service was not very good at all on this visit and they did not have a couple of ingredients for drinks we requested. We just had the meet and cheese plates, which are good. I generally recommend it because it is a cool place, but they need to step it up on the service.
Visited Harold Black for weeknight birthday drinks with a friends. Bar was noisier than description and reviews had indicated, so until the large parties on either side of us left, it was not good for conversation. Service was not good--our water and our drinks emptied and we had to flag down the server to get refills and to order food. Also, as noted, it was a bday and while this was pointed out to server, there was no acknowledgement of it (and yes, I know its not required but it is appreciated when there is a small sweet or beverage proffered as a token gift). Also, booth was rather tight and table affixed to floor/not adjustable and this was not comfortable for plus-sized members of party. One used a chair outside of booth but it was hard metal thing, not well cushioned like the booths.
It would be nice if a party of two could have a a table, we had reservations and had to sit at the bar.
This was the first time I've been to Harold Black's right when they open, but it's an incredible experience. Had some great conversations with the staff, and the bartender had time to make my buddy and I each an incredible cocktail that he adjusted slightly based on what he thought our personalities were. Tasted incredible! Also, the food was unreal, and the dessert was just as good. This place is unparalleled, it's so good!
We just went up for a drink but it was great vibes and a very cool spot.
Wonderful experience. Will definitely go again.
We were there for over an hour - it took forever to get one round of drinks for our party of 5. We had menus but the waiter never came back to ask if we wanted to order any food. We left after over an hour and went somewhere else - wont be going back. The drinks were good but the service was terrible.
This is one of my new favorite spots. Absolute must! My boyfriend and I went for cocktails after dinner and it was great. What I like about this place is how they control the crowd. No one is on top of each other or sitting too close. You cant' hear others conversations and its an intimate atmosphere.
The drinks are incredible. I am picky and they made a drink based off things that I listed off that I like. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. 10/10 would go again- I highly recommend.
We were in town from San Diego and this was one of the highlights of our trip.
Great ambiance, decor, and experience for tasty drinks.
Came here with my mom and had such a fun time. She was in love with the decor and the drinks. I asked her what her favorite part of the trip was and Harold Black made the cut!
This is our second time at Harold Black, but for some reason the waitress seemed to have an attitude all night. No friendly chatter, no smiles and almost eager to see us wrap up and leave. The service didn’t feel very welcoming at all. Otherwise food, cocktails and ambience were all up to expectations. Too bad this waitress lacked the minimal interpersonal skills required
Lovely bar with a speakeasy vibe. Interesting drinks. Great bartender. Looking forward to our return.
