Harold Black Ratings and Reviews
This was my first speakeasy experience in DC and was not disappointed.
Oddly enough, the entire block of Harold Black’s power was out on Saturday night and so they couldn’t open at their regular time. The staff kept me updated through texts and calls and when they reopened, we were able to get a booth for an hour. Honestly, an hour is not enough time to take in all that they have to offer. The cocktails and the service were absolutely amazing and I will definitely be back in the near future!
I love speakeasys, seek them out in major cities around the country. Harold Black I would give about a 3 out of 5 if compared to other speakeasys in the region. It's really solid on ambiance as it's got a great secluded and authentic feel, but drink wise (forgive me as I do like visiting the place) it's just not really there. The mixed drinks are a about 2 steps up from a decent sports bar, but about 3 steps down from a good speakeasy and can't touch the real deal. The drinks are 'ok'. You won't be sorely disappointed but if you go for real drinks you won't be impressed. If you're a foodie, probably you won't want to go nuts here. The food is presented well, but it's about on par with the drinks. This is odd as I believe it's owned by the restaurant below which is spectacular. But if you take the cured meets or cheeses for example...I'm 'nearly' certain they are buying them from Eastern Market across the street, which is not where you go for top quality meets or cheese. But they slice the meats thin which helps open the flavor and hides the quality a bit and they cut the cheese thick so you get good portions there.
This review probably sounds bad and it's not mean to. As I mentioned, I like the place, but just don't go in thinking it's one of the top tier speakeasies in the city. It's a good middle ground...though priced as if it were top shelf (3 traditional drinks, a meet and cheese board and fish tacos came to $101 last time I was there).
Great place, i love it. I think this place is one of the best places to take a date. It is oozing with charachter.
the drinks are amazing. I say that the drinks here arent made - they are crafted. It is almost like all the bartenders have a 4 yr degree in booze.
I probably go to this bar a a dozen times a year, however, on two occassions pop music way playing - dont do that HB. keep the music blues/jazzy.
The vibe, service and interior are all amazing, just make sure you pick the right drink or ask for a custom made one. We were a group of 3 and no one really liked their drink because the taste of the alcohol was so dominant, it ruined the other flavors.
Dark, dreary, dull. Not a great bar, certainly not a restaurant, not interesting as a destination. The cocktails are fine but when I asked to go off menu and asked for a bourbon based cocktail suggestion, the bartender seemed completely confused. Cool neighborhood though.
Staff was super responsive and friendly. The atmosphere is a conversation starter. Creative drinks as well as old standards. I really liked the use of locally distilled spirits. The best is that you asked to put away your phones.
Our visit to Harold Black was absolutely fantastic. They were accommodating about changing our seating and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for, cozy, candlelit, and quiet. The cocktails and cheesecake were amazing! Definitely a gem to go back to.
I'm a HUGE lover of Speakeasies. I think part of it is finding how to get inside, and the other part is the whole experience once you're in. I've been to two others in D.C., and many others around the world, and Harold Black is up there in terms of my favorite ones. There's something "magical" about walking into a Prohibition-style speakeasy that transports you into that era. From the decor, to the cocktails, to the service, and food menu, Harold Black was all around a GREAT experience!
