Great experience! Excellent cocktails and friendly atmosphere andservice!
I went to Harold Black with my husband for his birthday and the food, drinks, and ambiance were all great. I've been before with a friend for late night drinks but we didn't eat. The cocktails are really interesting. The speakeasy vibe is fun but very dark, so it's hard to read menus. We got the short rib, cheese board, and brussel sprouts and everything was delicious. Would recommend!
Great all around speakeasy experience
Outstanding ambiance, noise level and craft cocktails; need to work on the food..
Leila was our bartender and she and the rest of the staff were awesome.
Perfect spot for drinks with a date or small group of friends. Great cocktails.
Kind of loud, service was slow and there were only 3 tables full when we went.
Great drinks and fabulous space. Great place for drinks with friends you actually want to talk to.
Really great, well crafted cocktails. Min was our bartender and he was super friendly and helpful. Definitely not cheap but you get what you pay for!
My husband and I loved this place. Min, our primary bartender, was amazing in his creation of craft cocktails for me - with scotch no less. That night I came to appreciate bartending as art.
The ambiance was relaxed and casual. Loved every minute of our talk me there. The salad and brussel sprouts were delicious.
I’d definitely recommend this to anyone and would love to visit again when I’m in DC.
My experience was great, the staff were amazing, drinks were good and strong, food was delicious and finding it was fun. Come early so you can take your time looking for this speakeasy.
Great cocktails and quick service! I’d recommend the old fashioned. The ambiance was also fantastic, very romantic and not over crowded
The entire experience is a step back to a simpler time. From knocking to enter to their “house rules,” it helps you slow down and enjoy the evening... and a few forbidden drinks.
The servers are great and always make you feel like you're at home. The space is quiet and cozy, perfect for getting to know someone special or just hanging out with a great friend to catch up on life.
The drinks are always well-mixed and the fish tacos hit the spot for a late night bite.
Great find! Super nice atmosphere and really nice cocktails.
Very poor service and sugary drinks. The ambiance is cool but, overall, HB is not worth the hype.
This is my third time at Harold Blacks and I really enjoy it each time
It’s so fun to have to find the bar. The ambiance is amazing and great for intimate conversations. Cocktails were sophisticated and tasty, but pricey. Definitely good for special occasions.
I loved the speak easy atmosphere, from getting into the bar to the music selection to the attire of the staff. All very early 1900s. One thing, positive or negative depending on what kind of drinker you are, was that their drinks were very alcohol-forward. I ended up getting the st. George, which was rum on rum on rum. It was delicious, but if you usually go for drinks that have less of an alcoholic taste, I wouldn't suggest here. This is more of a 'get a cocktail and settle in for a conversation' place, which worked perfectly for us!
Bottom line: cute concept, execution needs work. Tried walking up to Harold Black without a reservation without success -- decided to get a reservation and do it right. HB has 30 total seats (not 30 tables, 30 seats). So, it is cozy. Entirely lit by candle, it creates a nice vibe on a cold winter evening. We were sat and received water right away but things then ground to a halt. Our server didn't greet us / ask about questions for 15 minutes, and we were there for over 40 minutes (and 3 water refills) before we received our drinks. The drinks were good but not worth needing a reservation. I'd suggest Copycat on H Street for a better example of what HB is trying for. As we left, the hallway was packed with others hoping to get a seat. I'm guessing they were falling behind on their reservations, which could have been easily solved with better service.
Went there almost one year to the date for a birthday
I was a little disappointed, expectations set from a year before. My drinks were ok, but everyone else’s really good. I think the mixologist was stumped by my request to incorporate ginger and rye and not too sweet. Food was good and decor was good as always. We did not get the complimentary champagne as a good bye but that is ok, but it was a nice touch the year before
A very special place to celebrate a special occasion. The staff read my note about my sons birthday and brought us champagne t celebrate. The staff is great, the charcuterie tray excellent and drinks were amazing.
Amazing place, super good food and perfect custom drinks !!
This places is amazing. I am surely coming back. The service was amazing.
Absolutely amazing. It's the door to the left of the restaurant in case you're wondering.
Second time visit, different experience. Did the max group size (6) with a cozy corner booth. Went off-menu with the tasting (5 drinks for $40; the price went up), but I would suggest doing a cocktail tasting only when you sit at the bar. Also suggest date nights here rather than group events.
What an awesome place. From the eerie, hush, hush hall to the knocking of the door to get in, it was great! My kids thought I was joking when we we went in the. Wooden door. They had a really neat time. I really wanted to go because I read about the place, but I was with my 16 & 17 year old. The staff was awesome with them. Treated them like adults we had some light fare food and I found a place I'd go back to with my husband next time we're on D.C.
Love the location between the bartender and waitress i got Beat for an extra $20
This place is very small and definitely is best if you have a reservation. We went at 9:30 on a Saturday night, which was exactly the kind of thing we were looking for, but there was nothing else around that was open late enough for us to hit a second place. If you want to do a whole night out, I would suggest hitting Harold Black on the earlier side. Other than that, great service and a lovely cocktail list! They also do a bartender's choice cocktail if you don't find something on the menu that interests you. We didn't have food but their menu had a lot of different options.
It was great.
Always great cocktails and service. Highly recommend!
Everything was lovely . Service was great. It's a good place for date night.
It was wonderful - the lighting, music, drinks, food...everything.
The bar is one of the most enjoiable in the city. The bartender and his service is most dignified
I go here at least once a month and I love that it allows me and some friends to get together and enjoy one another's company in a quiet and comfortable place. Cozy and warm springs to mind as the word that best describes this place.
Lalah is always super awesome and Derek was pretty attentive too.
Best date spot I've been to in DC. Great set-up, perfect volume of background noise. Not trying too hard to be a speakeasy, but plays the part very well. Excellent hand-crafted cocktails. I'll come back for sure. I haven't tried the food yet so no comment on that.
I reserved a table and I got two seats at the bar. But it turned out better than I expected. The food was reasonably good and the service was particularly good. A really friendly place. I’ll be back.
Derek and Emily were wonderful hosts for our evening. We dropped in between our wedding and our ceremony for a quick one-on-one break from the craziness and they treated us like royalty. Best drinks you can find in town, for sure. Thanks for everything, guys!
My wife and I went on whim after a quick google search of places in the area. It took us a bit to find the correct door but once we were in we did not want to leave. Our bartender that night was Layla and we told her what we like to drink and she made custom cocktails for us from the information we gave. For food, we order the cheese plate, which we could have eaten 3 of ( because it was that good, not because it was small) and the charcuterie. We will be going back once we are in the area again.
Harold Black was amazing!! I will be back!
