Harold And Belle's Creole Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We originally secured a 9:30p reservation on Open Table, and the manager called and asked us to move it to 8p so they could close early. No problem. Upon arrival - and we were six minutes late, the hostess asked us to wait at the front for a few minutes while she got approval to seat us. The place was fairly empty, but we waited an additional seven minutes for someone to greet and offer us beverages.
The waitress was nice. The food was good, but did not have the same love it normally does. My shrimp etouffe was tasty, but lukewarm. We did not say anything because we could tell they were trying to get out of there. The staff were hustling back and forth cleaning up. There were a few tables around us closing their tabs as we were waiting for our food, and after they left the staff became anxious. Every time we looked up, a man was standing in the kitchen threshold or walking past our section checking his watch. It made us feel rushed and a little uncomfortable, so we quickly finished our food; but we were hoping to have a few drinks and dessert, so we went somewhere else to finish our meal.
When I originally made the reservation, I added a note that we recently got married and this was our first holiday as a couple. Was not expecting anything major, but did think the manager that called and mentioned our nuptials would have stopped by or told our server to extend a congratulations. That personal touch and care is what brings people back. This was not my first time at Harold & Belle's, so I know the quality and full experience we would have received.
We had the last seating for the night on New Year's Eve, so I take into consideration the staff were counting down and ready to go. That is a note to self, do not go here on a holiday, especially right before they close.
After hearing the rave reviews, I was excited about the overall experience. Upon my arrival, I was promptly sitted. I ordered the fried chicken with fries. The chicken was old, fries tasted like they came from a bag at the grocery store. I feel the food received should have cost me $9.99 instead of the $24 I paid.
The tables were too close together. I heard entire conversations from other guest and could not hear from the person I was with.
I’m a foodie and this place did not rate high on my return list.
This isn't not the Harold and Belle's from back in the 90's... The food in the past was exceptional! The food we had on Sunday Sept 24th 2017 was average or just below.. the food tastes very commercialized... I even had my son from college with us.. this kid normally eats off all plates! Not only did he not eat his food but didn't want to try anything else! The nicely seasoned southern comfort food was absent from all plates ordered.. the fried platter , jambalaya & especially the crawfish Ettoufee!!!
We were very disappointed with our dish which was the jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were not jumbo and were way over cooked. When we complained we were told that was how they look when grilled. No apology for the poor preparation. We had invited guests from Seal Beach and was not happy.
Great food, service and ambiance. There were three of us and we had not been together in a few months. We were able to converse easily, catch up on what's been going on in our lives and we never felt rushed to eat and get out! We will definitely return. What a wonderful restaurant in the neighborhood.
I was disappointed by my dining experience at H&B. We arrived late (having called the restaurant to tell them we were delayed 15 minutes) and still had to wait 15 minutes for a table - though the restaurant wasn't even close to full.
Our waitress barely acknowledged us except to drop menus and take our order. We had to flag down another waitress to get our check, it was that bad.
The menu looked good, but the food delivered was different than we expected and while HUGE portions the quality was very low. Even though it is summertime and corn season, they were OUT of corn. How?! I ordered a $32 platter of shrimp and catfish. Based on the menu description it was supposed to be grilled but showed up fried. Three shrimp and 12 pieces of catfish that tasted terrible. I could barely get to the fish with so much breading. Since the waitress never checked on us I didn't have a chance to comment or complain. My father got a shrimp scampi dish that was actually served in a red sauce, not a white wine sauce. So bizarre. The liver and onions my mother ordered was so dry it was almost inedible. None of us liked our food and we got a variety of dishes.
And the cost - my oh my! We spent nearly $150 on food and drinks only to be ignored and dissatisfied, in a very loud, but totally dull atmosphere. I gather it was recently re-done but it was the most bland restaurant I've ever been in with uncomfortable seating.
We heard H&B was good, but I can't say that it was on any level even an OK restaurant. I've already told friends who moved into the neighborhood to avoid this local spot. Many other places offer better food in the same style at a much lower price with better service, atmosphere and actual food. I still can't get over how BAD the food was - for all of us!
I've eaten here many times and this is the third time since the remodel. After my experience this past Saturday night I know now that this is not the place to come on a Saturday night. The bar service was horrible it took at least 20 minutes to get the drinks from when ordered and then they weren't subpar. Add insult to injury they were out of bar basics like one of the ingredients to a Cadillac margarita, then I remembered in the past their bartenders are not so great and I don't understand why that is, especially with such good food. The other thing was I took my dessert to go and the portion was rather skimpy. It won't make me stop going but it will make me look at them in a different light. After all of these years in business these are easy fixes and they should work on them.
The occasion was our wedding anniversary and we wanted to eat at a place that would remind us of the creole food we enjoyed in New Orleans where we met. It was a Saturday night and the only table available was very close to the extremely noisy bar. It was also extremely crowded, perhaps overcrowded.. We believe that this may have been responsible for the file gumbo which we had enjoyed in the past but on this night had too much sausage and too little seafood. We would probably have enjoyed ourselves more if we had gone for lunch or for dinner in the middle of the week.
Visiting the be New...
Had not been to be the restaurant since it reopened. Much to my surprise Decor - contemporary, clean, roomy; Bar area - two thumbs up... traditional...now you can walk in without faces meeting you at the door...; Live music - awesome...nice for a romantic outing; Food - still delicious but don't expect as much food as you use to get...
