Harold And Belle's Creole Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
After hearing the rave reviews, I was excited about the overall experience. Upon my arrival, I was promptly sitted. I ordered the fried chicken with fries. The chicken was old, fries tasted like they came from a bag at the grocery store. I feel the food received should have cost me $9.99 instead of the $24 I paid.
The tables were too close together. I heard entire conversations from other guest and could not hear from the person I was with.
I’m a foodie and this place did not rate high on my return list.
This isn't not the Harold and Belle's from back in the 90's... The food in the past was exceptional! The food we had on Sunday Sept 24th 2017 was average or just below.. the food tastes very commercialized... I even had my son from college with us.. this kid normally eats off all plates! Not only did he not eat his food but didn't want to try anything else! The nicely seasoned southern comfort food was absent from all plates ordered.. the fried platter , jambalaya & especially the crawfish Ettoufee!!!
We were very disappointed with our dish which was the jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were not jumbo and were way over cooked. When we complained we were told that was how they look when grilled. No apology for the poor preparation. We had invited guests from Seal Beach and was not happy.
Great food, service and ambiance. There were three of us and we had not been together in a few months. We were able to converse easily, catch up on what's been going on in our lives and we never felt rushed to eat and get out! We will definitely return. What a wonderful restaurant in the neighborhood.
I was disappointed by my dining experience at H&B. We arrived late (having called the restaurant to tell them we were delayed 15 minutes) and still had to wait 15 minutes for a table - though the restaurant wasn't even close to full.
Our waitress barely acknowledged us except to drop menus and take our order. We had to flag down another waitress to get our check, it was that bad.
The menu looked good, but the food delivered was different than we expected and while HUGE portions the quality was very low. Even though it is summertime and corn season, they were OUT of corn. How?! I ordered a $32 platter of shrimp and catfish. Based on the menu description it was supposed to be grilled but showed up fried. Three shrimp and 12 pieces of catfish that tasted terrible. I could barely get to the fish with so much breading. Since the waitress never checked on us I didn't have a chance to comment or complain. My father got a shrimp scampi dish that was actually served in a red sauce, not a white wine sauce. So bizarre. The liver and onions my mother ordered was so dry it was almost inedible. None of us liked our food and we got a variety of dishes.
And the cost - my oh my! We spent nearly $150 on food and drinks only to be ignored and dissatisfied, in a very loud, but totally dull atmosphere. I gather it was recently re-done but it was the most bland restaurant I've ever been in with uncomfortable seating.
We heard H&B was good, but I can't say that it was on any level even an OK restaurant. I've already told friends who moved into the neighborhood to avoid this local spot. Many other places offer better food in the same style at a much lower price with better service, atmosphere and actual food. I still can't get over how BAD the food was - for all of us!
I've eaten here many times and this is the third time since the remodel. After my experience this past Saturday night I know now that this is not the place to come on a Saturday night. The bar service was horrible it took at least 20 minutes to get the drinks from when ordered and then they weren't subpar. Add insult to injury they were out of bar basics like one of the ingredients to a Cadillac margarita, then I remembered in the past their bartenders are not so great and I don't understand why that is, especially with such good food. The other thing was I took my dessert to go and the portion was rather skimpy. It won't make me stop going but it will make me look at them in a different light. After all of these years in business these are easy fixes and they should work on them.
The occasion was our wedding anniversary and we wanted to eat at a place that would remind us of the creole food we enjoyed in New Orleans where we met. It was a Saturday night and the only table available was very close to the extremely noisy bar. It was also extremely crowded, perhaps overcrowded.. We believe that this may have been responsible for the file gumbo which we had enjoyed in the past but on this night had too much sausage and too little seafood. We would probably have enjoyed ourselves more if we had gone for lunch or for dinner in the middle of the week.
Visiting the be New...
Had not been to be the restaurant since it reopened. Much to my surprise Decor - contemporary, clean, roomy; Bar area - two thumbs up... traditional...now you can walk in without faces meeting you at the door...; Live music - awesome...nice for a romantic outing; Food - still delicious but don't expect as much food as you use to get...
Very disappointed. We had a reservation at 8:15PM for two on a Saturday, and arrived about 10 minutes early. We waited next to the hostess stand, and were told by an employee at 8:35 that there are some guests who are staying longer than expected. After another 15 minutes waiting, we decided to leave at 8:50, 35 minutes after our reservation time. There was no word from a manager (identified as such), offer of hospitality (such as a couple of drinks at the bar), or anything besides the above mentioned update. I do expect some action from a restaurant to handle this type of situation, even if it is basically impossible to ask seated guests to leave. Having two guests just stand there for more than half an hour after their appointment, with only the update mentioned above, is not acceptable. I was looking forward to Harold and Belle's famous Creole food, but I will not return. Note: I gave the food three stars though I did not taste it - I had to give some kind of rating by the OpenTable system and I just chose the middle one. The other ratings are based on my experience there. Though I spend no money there, my time (and all of ours) is valuable on a Saturday evening and it was wasted, so I listed the Value as Poor.
Harold & Belle's is a gem of a family restaurant that I always enjoy patronizing. The creole food is delicious, the Friday night jazz is hot and the clientele is top notch. I visited Harold & Belle's on two consecutive nights; Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The high quality food and service were amazing both times. I will return to this lovely restaurant again.
We stopped there for lunch on Saturday when they opened at 11:30am. We got a table, the server was right there to take our drink orders, she brought the drinks and took our food order. The food came in a very timely manner... perfectly cooked and seasoned. We had the Fried Oysters, Clam chowder, Hot Links Appetizer, Fried Catfish lunch and the Crispy Chicken Salad. For desert, we had the benets!!
I am going to repeat, the food was perfectly cooked and seasoned... everything was so good! We are definitely going back again for lunch and also for dinner. I understand they have live music on certain week nights. We are going to call and find our when, and go back for the music as well as the food!
My family and I have come to Harold and Belle's for years; now I bring my Friends. Great for Lunch, perfect for dinner. The staff are versed in Menu choices from drinks to dessert, they are fun and friendly, and give you time to savor your drinks and food. The food titillates your taste buds without become effusive. The music is good and adds to the comfort of the meal and the overall visit. I recognize the update to the décor has been a huge change, and the prices have gone up...but change can be an eye opener and offer the choices of new things both in food and atmosphere...yet Harold and Belle's still retains the "Umph" that convinced all to eat there and come back again... then to bring more Family and Friends.
Terrible experience! Could have been much better if the people they hire actually appreciate having a job! Waited 20 mins before anyone stopped to greet us and take our order. This was after several dry faced waiters passed us and purposely made no eye contact. Took our order and kept coming back to ask if they had it right. Get a pen and paper!!! Ordered appetizer and never got it. Had to ask for utensils and sauces normally on the table. Slapped our food on the table and never came back to check. Walked around looking for someone to take our check! Never again!!!
