We went to Hanover Tavern for their brunch. The selections were quite adequate and the entree's we selected were well proportioned and tasted excellent. Our server was very friendly and helpful, especially in helping us in making our selections. The tavern is also a historic location with exhibits and an audio tour if you so desire. Truly a nice place to visit.
We stopped here with my parents on the way home from Baltimore. It was a little out of the way, but worth the extra 10 miles. Historic location. Excellent fried green tomato appetizer and salads. Would definitely return!
Hanover tavern was a great restaurant with great service. Many of the people there were eating before prom, as was myself. The food was great, and I would reccomend them to anyone.
My husband and I went to Hanover Tavern at the suggestion of a friend and we were very disappointed in the food. He ordered the Rib Eye steak and he said it was tough and had on flavor. I had the sea bass and it did not have any flavor. The cost of the meal and quality was not equal.
We enjoyed celebrating my dads 73 birthday at Hanover Tavern. Food is Southern and the portions were very big. Melissa was a great waitress! The grounds are very pretty and historic.
We have wanted to come here for brunch or dinner for several years and once we finally made it, we were not disappointed. Everyone from the ambience and service to the food and presentation was excellent. We look forward to our return.
It had been a while since we were at the tavern and we were pleased that the upstairs was open.
Appetizers are large, so plan to leave some on the plate if you want to enjoy your entree.
We both had the same entree and it was excellent.
Service was exactly right. Attentive but no hovering.
The Hanover Tavern is a great little spot in an awesome historic building. We've been for both dinner and brunch. In our experience, brunch is slightly more consistent than dinner in terms of quality of food, but the options are great for both. Reservations are recommended.
The Mother's Day Brunch looked appealing online but we didn't realize we would be seated in the "new" non-historic event venue. It was a buffet and table service was very slow. Food was mediocre. Omelet station ran out of eggs at one point. Our party of 7 had auto gratuity added and they also asked for more. I hope the main tavern is a better experience. Seemed like they were capitalizing on Mother's Day diners to make extra $.
Mothers Day buffet was not stocked proper for the 1pm reso's. Bisque was lukewarm when it was replenished, Lamb was dry, chicken had no taste, Pina colada french toast was marginal.
We went for Mother's Day brunch and had amazing food from the buffet. Cool place to go with history
We had a wonderful experience on Mother's Day! The venue is so nice and relaxing. It was quiet so we could hear each other talk and were easily about to converse among our table of 6. The food was good, but the shrimp and grits didn't have any shrimp. The omlet bar was fantastic and the chef was nice enough to whip up some fresh salsa for me upon request. We would happily schedule an event here in the future.
Great meal and great service!
Has to be one of the most historic places to eat in Virginia. Love the preserved house. Attentive and friendly staff. Great food.
Very nice place with historic significance! The menu was great, but would have preferred a few more casual options for the adolescence. We missed the crab cake sandwich and burger. Fried Green Tomatoes were a nice beginning. Fried oysters presented texture issues for some in the group, but smoke flavor was good. Shrimp & Grits and Sea Bass were a delight.
My friends took me to The Tavern for my birthday. We all loved the food and our service was excellent.
The chef used way too much salt in all the dishes. I think it would have been good if there was much less salt. My flounder was overcooked. My husband did not like the meatloaf.
Love this place! The history, food and ambiance make for a great dining experience. Schedule one of the ghost tours to get the history of the building. Highly recommended!!
I have been for brunch and loved it --- this time we came for dinner then the theater show, and it was NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE. The waitstaff was wonderful, down to earth and very attentive. However, the fellow diners had ridiculous expectations, causing the small wait staff to literally run back and forth to the kitchen, --- I got a very obvious rude look from some older ladies for having the gall to sit at the table the hostess brought us to, a table too close to them apparently. My husband was so angry at the really rude behavior of those two old ladies toward me, we can't help the fact that the tables are close together -- and we still moved the table away from them without anyone asking, just to be kind, but still got the "you aren't good enough to eat here look" from the old ladies. Then their conversation was bad mouthing their own children and talking about which grandchildren didn't get to do things because their parents didn't have enough money. Yeah, that made me lose my appetite -- those poor in spirit ladies that put money over love -- just sad, sad, sad. So unless you are both rude and wealthy, be prepared for some "you don't belong here" looks. The food was okay to good, not spectacular (theater menu is limited and no substitutions) -- that said, I liked their bread and the pumpkin polenta and beets a lot - and the chicken was cooked perfectly, just not a lot of seasonings. Loved the theater, but due to the vibe from the dinner crowd, I will not ever return.
I love the brunch menu for both the breakfast and lunch options. The pumpkin fritters were great. I loved that the salads have REAL greens with fruit and goat cheese or gorgonzola -- and you can add grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon, or a crabcake to make it a meal. I had the oranges, spinach and fig goat cheese with the crabcake -- it was the perfect size, not too big (not like you can take a soggy salad home in a box!) but large enough for a lunch meal. The service was very good too. Neat history and very lovely outdoor patio in the back of the building, weather permitting. I plan to go back soon!
Had a great time at dinner and enjoyed the play. Our waitress was GREAT
Food wasn't hot, even after it was sent back to be reheated. Soup was slopped out of the bowl, all over the serving plate and crackers, very messy. She crab soup was bland, lacking seasoning. Fried oysters were not hot and weren't well prepared. Very cool place though, friendly helpful staff, beautiful restaurant. Just think the food needs work. Or maybe I just hit it on a bad day...
The food was great as usual but as many times as my Wife and I have been there the menu doesn't really change.
My husband and I decided we would treat my mother-in-law to dinner in celebration of her 91st birthday. We had such an enjoyable evening... the food, the service, and the atmosphere, all great!
We live out of state but we will return whenever we're down that way again.
We love the menu and the setting is amazing. Consistently terrific and very enjoyable dinner before the play.
Best for meal before play. Decent fod but not to write about. Meatloaf mushy but fried green tomatoes great. Wines mediocre. Play great!!
everything was wonderful- My husband and I had a great time and look forward to our next visit.
It is a lovely facility with excellent food. The service is always excellent with very friendly staff. We always enjoy eating there before a play.
food was much improved. I was very pleased. the quality has gone from " midlin" to quite good. hats off to your new chief.
now would like to see service improved. Quite slow.
We are VArep subscribers .
We loved the atmosphere of the theater, "Dancing Lessons" was wonderful. Have recommended the Tavern to at least 6 friends.
As always, we had a delightful experience. The service was beyond excellent, the food superb, the place wonderful to be in. It is a fantastic place to spend time with friends and share exquisite food. Bravo, Hanover!!!!!!!
Great food and great service. They were busy but it felt like we were the only table they were serving! Can't wait to return!
The food was delicious but the hostess and bartender was not very attentive or pleasant. The bartender especially was not interested in serving us and we were the only 4 people in the bar waiting for our table. We had to ask her each time we needed something, she never offered.
This is a great destination restaurant. The food is spectacular and it has a great history. I come here on special occasions and it never disappoints. I highly recommend it!
Great place to spend Valentines Day. Special menu was excellent.
There was only one server and a bus boy on duty the Sunday night we went, so service was a bit slow. The food was good and extremely well-presented. Shrimp and grits and the pork loin were our entrees choices. The Brunswick Stew was hearty. Don't get the crab dip unless you are sharing it--it's a lot.
In the past, I have been very satisfied. However, my experience yesterday was with the brunch buffet, which was pretty ordinary. I much prefer ordering from the menu.
Food and service good, and price very good. One item (this was a buffet), the food wasn't kept warm enough. May want to consider more or bigger warmers and covering food.
Love the Hanover Tavern! The location and the ambiance are great. I love the historic building and the food is excellent. My husband and I had the brunch buffet and the only complaint we had was that the food wasn't very hot. Other than that, it was great!
