Handles Gastropub Ratings and Reviews
We came for dinner on a Sunday. Our server was attentive but not over the top. The food was great with good menu choices for adults and kids. We would definitely visit again. We have given a lower score for ambience because another guest had a really loud voice and used it to 'entertain' a young child in her party. It was distracting for other guests and made conversation at our table quite difficult sometimes..... Not the fault of the restaurant but it did spoil the ambience for us.
The food was great, drinks were good. We just had the misfortune of being there when there were two different groups having birthday celebrations. Oh, the service was excellent. I've been there on several other occasions for a drink or two and I absolutely love the place.
I don't know why this place has negative reviews, it's awesome! Nice service, spacious and clean. It's fabulous bar food w/out the ruckus.
The Pork Nachos were huge and to die for!
We also had the fish and chips and porkchops, also delicious.
Really big selection of beer as well.
I will definitely be back to try all their small plates.
This was our first time to Handles. We picked it because of the extensive beer list. The beer variety was great, the food was pretty good too, and the service was top-notch. I was actually blown-away by the knowledgeable attentive service. If you're looking for pub food and great beer and/or drinks...try Handles...it's great!
The service was so poor that I thought about emailing the restaurant to let the owners know of the situation Sun eve, but they don't have an email address. After reading the Yelp reviews I realized that our dining experience wasn't unusual.
So stick to the bar and appetizers, that seems to be where they want to excel.
Let's start with basics: for a primarily bar operation, listing the red wine category beside white wines and then whites beside reds on the printed menu isn't good. But then misspelling Berkeley on one of the craft beers shows someone isn't paying attention. To be fair, both a chosen glass of wine and craft beer were great. But then the entrees came. A listed chicken breast turned out to be a leg/thigh quarter, not the same and not as healthy. Told the server right away who, much like her entire service, was indifferent. No sorry, no offer to exchange, just "oh". Felt rushed the whole time even though 2/3 of the tables were empty and on a Wednesday night around 7-7:30pm when it wouldn't be getting crowded later. Beautiful historic setting, probably best for having a beer and then going to one of the many nearby other restaurants. Reading other posted reviews of similar poor service now brought me to my conclusion that someone isn't paying attention.
Although I was hit with a rather overwhelming dead-fish smell when I entered the pub, it quickly dissipated and I had an enjoyable meal. I ordered the salmon and it was done to perfection, and was just the right size. The place was charming, and although there wasn't a terribly broad selection of entrees, the food was very good and quite reasonably priced. I would go back on my next business trip.
3rd time here and 2nd time for Mothers Day. Hostess was very nice and polite and honored our exact time and seating booked on open table. Our server was good, but this places suggests a huge gratuity for serving water when you buy a buffet. They wanted upwards of $110 tip for serving water. Really!?!?!? The buffet was suppose to go on until late afternoon, but we were being rushed after just after being seated and they ran out of food before then. I asked some of the servers and some ignored me while others just said "That's it! no more food!" Dropped $350 here and we did not get enough food? Wow, that's really brave they must have money to spare.
Took the family here for mother's day brunch. They screwed up the reservation and was forced to rearrange our plans for the day and take a super late time slot. Food was super low budget. I felt like I was at a low rent hotel's complimentary breakfast. Service was non-existent. Handles has no business trying to put on a nice holiday brunch... They just don't have the ability or skill set to pull this off.
I have been to Handle's a handful of times and it has always been good. On Friday night we had terrible service that soured our experiences.
We were seated by the hostess and sat for almost ten minutes before I had to ask the hostess to send our waiter over. Later, when our food was delivered, one member of our party didn't get theirs. The waiter had to re-fire the order. All around disappointing dinner.
We arrived for Easter Brunch at 1 pm and were seated within a reasonable amount of time. We found the actual buffet very disappointing. The only egg dish was the omelette station; I was hoping for a bagel with lox and cream cheese, but there were only one and a half bagels on the table to choose from. Further, they had some type of weird salmon for the bagel, which looked grey around the edges. I took a little, but it didn't taste good. They had a carving station with ham and roast beef. The beef was good, but not great flavor on the ham. Further, there was no gravy or mashed potatoes. No cold cuts. Only two salads -- green salad and fruit salad. My husband and I ate the same things, except I ate some of the weird salmon on a bagel and he didn't. That night, I had major stomach issues (you know what I'm talking about). Had to be the salmon. It was just a sad buffet that was seriously lacking, not what we had expected. Never again.
We went for Valentine's Day dinner. I have had awful luck at other restaurants on V-Day in the past.
This was different, thankfully.
We were seated very shortly after we entered. There was no special menu with jacked up prices. Our hostess was very helpful and around to meet our needs just enough.
The food was good, great for V-Day.
I have been there before and will be back again!
We came in excited to try this restaurant. The location and atmosphere are very good. But the food was only fair and the service was awkward. They brought the dessert menu with the dinner menu, then when they picked up our menus, left the dessert menu. We were at a table for two and had nowhere to put it, so I put it on the booth seat next to me. We ordered the artichoke heart appetizer. When it was served, the waiter mumbled, I'll be right back with the ..." We couldn't make out what he was coming back with, and good thing, because he never did. Dinner was so-so. I got the meatloaf, which the waiter recommended. It had an odd, fluffy texture. The whole time I was eating it, I wondered what was in it. It was also very bland, dominated by the strong mushroom sauce. At some point, a bus boy finally came to clear our appetizer dishes, which were all empty. He took away the main appetizer plate but left our individual appetizer plates. Odd. When the waiter poured the rest of my wife's sparkling water (my bottle was empty), he took away her bottle but left mine, and didn't ask if we wanted more. After dinner, he brought more dessert menus. We were on the fence about dessert since we didn't feel the food was that great. He came by to see if we wanted to order dessert, and we asked for a couple more minutes, After waiting about 15 minutes for him to come back, we had lost any desire to try their desserts. We finally had to flag him down for our check. Too bad. We had wanted to like this restaurant.
We met some friends from San Jose and had a delicious lunch together. They were so impressed they went to come back to the same place when we get together for lunch again. The food was served nice and hot and it was delicious. We also enjoyed great desserts.
I do have to mention that I had coffee with my dessert and once the bill came and was paid, the waitress never came back and offered a refill. Considering what you pay for a cup of coffee, an offer to refill is not asking too much.
I booked lunch here for my team at the reccomendation of a friend. Our service was super slow, it felt like we were a bother to our server. Before even taking our order we were told she's have to take another's before she took ours. Long story short I will not be back to Handles anytime soon.
I am from out of town, wanted a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner and thank goodness Handles had just that, they did a very good job with the dinner this year, salad, soup and sides were really delicious, choice of desserts and of course the main course turkey or prime rib, we had the turkey very tasty!
I was stuck in town last year at Thanksgiving and we had also went to Handles, last year was disappointing, the turkey was barbequed and not nearly as good, salad not tasty, etc. Handles has fixed ALL of these problems, this year's mail was delicious!
We strongly recommend Handles for Thanksgiving dinner.
We had a pleasant time at Handles for thanksgiving, but not sure that I'd go back. Portion size was huge (too huge), but felt like it was slopped on the plate and it really wasn't anything special. Our waitress Kayla was sweet and helpful, but not sure that I'd return for the food . Drink menu was very good (lots of craft beers and ciders)
The meatloaf is delicious and there is a good variety of food. Love the selection of beer and its comfortable bar area adjacent to the dining section. There's actually two dining sections; one has a little more atmosphere and the other is quieter. Both are really nice. This place is fine for well-behaved kids which makes it great for families, but please don't bring active young ones that ruins the dining experience for others! This is one of my go-to places - casual but nice.
Handles Gastropub has the makings of a fantastic restaurant/craft beer pub. The service is fantastic. The staff is friendly and capable. The bar has a great ambiance. They also had a great band playing live music. Should have been a "great" experience, but the food was just good, not great. Artisan hamburgers under-cooked, wedge salads that were literally iceburg heads chopped in quarters and some dressing and bacon thrown in its general direction, mediocre presentation. If you are going to feature the fact that all you serve are craft beers on tap and charge upwards of $7 a glass for them, they had better be the right temperature. They were not. The beer was cool, not cold. Could have been great, but alas merely good.
The service was horrible! It took awhile for us to get the food and we asked server what was going on and he said that they were busy! There weren't many people in the resturant! When we got our food it was not that hot as well. We have been here once before and the service was alright but I don't know if we will be going back after this last experience. Server was not sympathetic. He did not offer to pay for meals or anything! We probably waited 45-1hr for our food!
