Handles Gastropub Ratings and Reviews
Handles does not recognize reservations done on Open Table. Do not make your reservations on this site!!!
They did not find our reservations and they told us that they do not get them if it's made on Open Table.
When they have large events- the staff are not well prepared. This is not the first time I have been there.
This is the third time I was there to support the same band and saw same thing happen as the last event.
Not going here any longer- will support the band at another location. It's too bad cuz I like this group and to have that kind of service just makes it hard to support them locally.
Easter Brunch buffet was clean, high quality and service terrific. Not the cheapest date in town but it's a well laid out, spacious restaurant with good views of the patio and the nice downtown area. Made a last minute change of plans on Easter be no stress. Thanks Handles!
I've been frequently coming to Handles Gastropub since they started business in the historic Pleasanton Hotel. I have always enjoyed the quality and selection of the food and beer that they offer, never to be disappointed yet. The only reason I give this review 3 stars on service is because we had to tell our waitress two times to get us glasses of water but on the other hand it's usually pretty good.
I made reservations for 6 people for a special friend get together. When I arrived we were seated at a table for 4. Not a good way to start the night considering my husband is 6'4. Service was very slow and food was average. We were seated in the bar which was very loud. This made it very difficult to enjoy conversation with friends. I will not return.
We go to Handles almost once a month. It's a good place to go with a group because the menu has plenty of variety for a pub. The service is hit or miss. Some days we get a great attentive server. Other days, you can see you beer sitting at the bar getting warm.
I feel bad because I've met the owner and manager and they're working really hard to make Handles a great place. In general service in Pleasanton restaurants is abnormally bad and I'm not sure why.
We were there for brunch for Grandma's birthday. No one else was in the restaurant. The omelets that the chef made in front of us were very good, but the other food served in the buffet was average at best. The french toast is not recommended. All pastries were not fresh. Grandma told us the outdoor patio is very gardenish and beautiful on a nice day but we ate inside because of the rainy day. I think this might be a nice place to come on a sunny day on the patio, and just order a fresh omelet!
Used Open Table to make reservation. Needed a local restaurant serving brunch on Sunday for 10-12 people. The menu viewed through the Open Table website indicated breakfast/brunch was off the menu with various breakfast options that could be ordered from the menu and not a buffet. Reason why I picked this restaurant was that it was not a buffet. When we arrived at the restaurant was disappointed to see that it was a buffet. Obviously with 11 people could not just leave and try to find another restaurant which serves breakfast. Disappointed in quality of food and variety of food. Cannot rely on restaurants to update menus on the Open Table website.
Picked this restaurant because it was the half way point between my house and my friend's house. The staff is great! I received a call after making my O/T reservation to ask my preference for seating, in or out. When I arrived I was greeted by the same person who had called me so we already had a connection. The great service continued with the server and the support staff, attentive but not overbearing. The food was delicious - we ordered a selection of small plates to share. I plan to go back with my husband, he will enjoy the extensive draft beer list!
The food and service was good. I ordered dessert and they brought apple instead of peach cobbler twice. The server felt awful! It was behind the scenes that was messing up. At that point I requested the bill. Not charged for dessert. Server left it and my husband ate it. The food was comfort food. The beer was good. Nice evening.
For the most part, Handles is a great place to come, relax and enjoy good food. This last trip was a bit of a bummer and I hope just an anomaly. We sat in a room that had a portable air conditioner, the heat outside over 100 degrees. There was no way that AC could compete in cooling the room and it made for a miserable dinning experience.
There were three of us and we had a reservation. The food and setting were great as we sat at a table at the outdoor patio area. However, the service was very slow and it appeared the focus was on larger parties (e.g. Larger gratuities) and I literally had to track down our waiter after waiting several minutes (10+) to even get a menu. It would help if they added more staff outside on busy days (it was a Saturday at 1pm) and less staff inside (there was one table being used).
The large beer selection was highly attractive to our group. The service was terrific. Not too slow or too invasive. We were all able to hear eachother across the table. Each person tried a different entree and everyone was totally pleased with their food. The band , Ten Tuesdays was fantastic. The dance floor was big enough for many dancers. Loads of fun!
I've been here before, last summer and sat outside then it was good overall. This past Saturday, the experience was lacking and perhaps it was because they were hosting a large party on the outdoor patio yet it was slow overall.
Our food, an iceberg blue cheese wedge salad and chicken breast sandwich was good but not good enough to give a better review. The chicken in fact should have been sliced in half as the breast on the selected bun was too big. Our server though pleasant seemed to only one working the room full of people trying to enjoy their meals.
At $39 a plate for Mother's Day Brunch, it was way over valued. Soft drinks were not even included in that price. Some dishes, in their serving trays, like the biscuits and gravy, were dried out and gloppy. There was no aujois (sp?) for the prime rib, in fact the carver did not know what it was. It took too long for some dishes to get replenished. The total cost for 3 people with two soft drinks, tax and 18% gratuity for 3 people came to $155. $52 a head was way over priced. Won't do that again.
I have been here several times and each time we dined indoors we were seated in the dining area adjacent to the bar. That area is far too noisy to carry on a conversation if the bar is busy because the loud laughter and shouting from the bar just bounce over the hardwood floors and walls. It's not a warm, welcoming room to have dinner. However, I would rate the food much better than the ambiance. We have enjoyed everything we have tried at Handles. (The outside eating area is better, but only nice when the weather is warm.)
The pork Nachos are the best nachos I've ever had. I've brought many friends here just to have the nachos and everyone is always impressed. The street tacos, Kobe sliders and meatloaf are also really good. The Mac and Cheese needs work (flavorless) but the biggest thing the restaurant needs to improve upon is service. The bartenders are always slow with the drinks, the kitchen seems like it's always a bit behind and the waiters appear "new". Again, because of the nachos and mostly great food, I continue to come here. I think this could be a fab place with some improvements.
It was a good experience. However, there were a few areas for improvement. It was not terribly busy though service seemed a bit on the slow side.
My wife ordered a top shelf Mandarin Orange Martini which was served with Olives and not an orange twist. This is pretty basic stuff. She also ordered the Kobe beef Sliders. When you order a dish with Kobe beef you are expecting the best and medium rare. She received what appeared to be well-done hockey pucks which she couldn't chew. That's a real shame. Outside of that our meals (6 of us) were pretty good.
I may give them a second chance to see if there is improvement.
