Hana Zen Sushi Bar - Pier 39 Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic views of the bay, Alcatraz and the passing ferry boats. Food is decent, but a tad expensive. The sushi, yakitori, and dinner menus are pricier than better Japanese restaurants elsewhere. The best deal are the bento boxes and lunch specials for around $15 (available until 4:30pm). No complaints, since most restaurants in this area have similar high prices, considering it's a tourist spot. The salmon teriyaki was fresh and moist. Some of the rice on the California roll didn't hold together, probably made by a novice. Apparently the place doesn't get many customers, so it takes a while before a waiter shows up. Service was friendly.
Perfect location if you want to look out over Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge! I was nervous because so much of what is in Fisherman's Wharf is touristy and not very good but our sushi was good and the service was nice. I think people must just stay towards the front of the wharf and don't bother walking to the back to see this great spot! We got a window seat and watched the boats and the fog. Very fun and good solid sushi.
You first go for the view, one of the best in SF, then comes the food and the pricing.
The food with out a doubt of top quality. we ate using the chef's choice and sake tasting. While the food was no doubt excellent the sake was very expensive. I would have prefered to have less quantity , lesser priced or more sushi instead.
We really enjoyed a good waitress and all the goings on in the bay with birds, boats and bouys. I would recommend but it is pricy.
We did enjoy the sushi, but it seemed to us that the sashimi was cut too thick. We find it to be more elegant and tastier when it sliced more thinly. The menu states number of pieces, but perhaps it should state weight so the sashimi could be sliced thinly. We ordered their barrel wine a 2005 from Alexander Valeyy, but it was already "gone." We sent it back and ordered a different bottle. But the temperature on both bottles was too warm. I suspect they don't cellar the wines correctly. Parking was difficult, so the truth is, although we enjoyed the food, we would not choose to come here again. It is too far away and not easy to reach. If a tourist is at Pier 39 and wants sushi, this would be a good opportunity, but no neighborhood spot.
This was my first time eating at this restaurant and it was pretty good. I met a friend whom I used to work with who I haven't seen in about 4 years. It was really good to catch up with her. We ordered an array of food starting with edamame and Calamari and then went on to a couple of rolls. I also ordered a bento box with Chicken and Tempura. It was actually quite good. We finished the meal with desert...I had mochi and my guest had creme bruele. I really loved the location of the restaurant which gives the diner an awesome view of he bay. I definitely would come back when I'm up in the bay area again
I had waited until the last minute to make plans to see the GG Bridge 75th Anniversary fireworks and thought I was out of luck, but Hana Zen at Pier 39 was my salvation. Not only was the food absolutely delicious--the fried oysters were done perfectly with just the right amount of light breading, the scallops were juicy with a fabulous, slightly spicy sauce and all the sushi rolls and drinks were just yummy--but we also had the added bonus of having a front row seat for the most fabulous fireworks I've seen in a long time. Hana Zen at Pier 39 is a winner and I will go back again!!
Excellent service as we were in a rush, not to mention late for our reservation time, but they took care of us. We ordered 4 different rolls which came up quickly and they were SO GOOD! Beautiful window table at sunset, bottle of wine, and fun friends and it was really a nice experience. Would definitely go here again. This is a nice, bright restaurant. Really lovely at sunset.
Absotulely loved the food, the staff, the drinks, the atmosphere. It is located at the end of Pier 39 and looks out over the Bay. Gorgeous view. The staff was excellent. Our waiter brought us food to share that he recommended - all delicious and so fresh! The bartender recommended some fun drinks. We had a wonderful evening. We had an 8:30 reservation (arrived early and was seated at a window table) and remained eatting and drinking until 11pm - never felt rushed. Enjoyed the entire evening!
We went on a Tuesday, so I'm not sure if it is normally a lot more busy, but it was close to empty at 8:30pm. The service was excellent, the sushi was very fresh and the decor and views were outstanding. It is tucked way in the back on the top floor of Pier 39, so I'm afraid it will have a hard time staying busy, unless they figure out some great marketing strategy. I would tell people to go, but the vibe at a place like this is important too and I hope they can get more business because everything else was great.
Food was excellent , hostess was wonderful and the people taking our order and service was great. I love this place and in fact I had lunch on 13th February with a friend and then again dinner on 14th February. I will recommend this place strongly.
I almost forgot to add that on 13th when we came for lunch we got a great view of the golden bridge as we were having seats just near the window and i requested the same for our dinner and hostess remembered it and gave the same to us on 14th excellent.
Several of our items never came out and we kept checking on the status over and over before they brought them out. They said that they didn't have the dessert we wanted then later the table next to us had that dessert. We asked for coffee twice and then the third time the waiter said they don't have coffee. In the beginning the waiter said he will give us to tea pots, but never did, had to keep asking. Later they took our tea pot and never brought it back. At the end we gave them two cards to bill it to and we even told them twice how much to bill each, and they still got it wrong. Then my friend gave one of them to validate her parking ticket, he put it in his pocket and NEVER did anything with it. Maybe because the tip was automatic??
This was a last minute dinner reservation as we were showing a guest around Pier 39 and couldn't decide where to eat. I don't think we really needed it as there weren't that many people. The place was okay, nice view. The service was great, though I'm not sure if it would have been the same during lunch when there are more tourists. The food was okay too, you have traditional Japanese food and some modern ones.
Food is ok, service by waiter Arthur was good. Busser spilled soup all over table and over my husband and onto the floor, left with his stack of plates, never came back to wipe spill on table or on floor. Left restaurant with soiled jeans smelling of ramen.
Doubt we will ever come back.
