About
We actually didn't get a chance to try this restaurant. When we arrived there was a sign..."cash only" like most we don't carry large amounts of cash and they would t accept checks. The man at the entry didn't speak enough English to answer questions. Very disappointing.
Avarage sushi, not sure if it was the time we went 3pm or what but the service was bad. We had to find the waiter each time we needed something. I ask for lemon and they brought me dry limes! Also the place its not nice, looks run down. The only nice thing r the views of bay...
Best restaurant in the pier with the view of san francisco bay and alcatraz island.
Geburtstag
This place offers great views of the bay but the service was terrible. First they started off by being out of a few drink items on the menu (not a huge deal). Then after we got our first round of drinks it took 40 minuets to even have our food order placed. When someone finally came over the first thing they said was "just so you know it's going to be a while for sushi". I asked how long was a while and they replied "a while". Not super helpful. Turns out they were short staffed which is not their fault exactly but "a while" turned out to be over 2 hours (from placing our order) for bland sushi.
My fault for going to what was I guess a tourist place but still, would not recommend.
This restaurant had the shortest wait in Pier 39. Now I know why. It had a really nice view of the bay and Alcatraz. People were nice, but food was super slow. Waited 15 min to order, took another 45min for food. Food was bland. Not going back.
This was worse than I could have imagined. We were visiting for business and had no idea this area was so touristy. It was awful The ambience was depressing. The food was mediocre. The server was nice enough but this was just a huge disappointment. The only reason to go is during the day for the view of Alcatraz and the bay.
Walked in and there were only 4 patrons in the place. Ordered drinks and appetizers and that was as far as this visit lasted. Saw a mouse scurrying across the restaurant and walked out. The End.
We were extremely disappointed in Hana Zen Sushi Bar. First, it took forever to find it. It is at the extreme end of Pier 39 on the second floor. Quite a walk. It was empty when we arrived. The prices on their menu were much higher than the prices they show online. When we pointed that out, they were not willing to make any accommodations. We specifically came there for my husband to enjoy soft shell crabs. He said they were just OK. The serving was one crab and it was very deep fried. I had a sushi roll that was good, but nothing special. We would not return.
We ate Noodles with garlic and salmon half burned, badly cooked...and 2 coca Cola for 80 dollars ... bas expérience
This restaurant is a real find! It is hidden at the very end of Pier 39 with a fabulous view of the bay and Alcatraz out to Sausalito. It’s tucked behind Bubba Gumps (where the line was huge) so people miss it. The food was delicious and portions were generous. The service was great and they made our birthday boy (my hubby) feel great! Easy for groups and vacationers. AND, the server was amazing, remembering all 11 orders without writing anything down!
Excellent view along with great food and great service
They didn't honor my reservation, asked me to wait outside, after more than an hour waiting in the cond wind they were telling me that it would be another hour to get my table... and they were blaming the system but I got a frustrated night.
Fish is super fresh. A1
We were a family reunion/birthday celebration group of 6 - they took excellent care of us and let us sit and converse/connect for over an hour after lunch was cleared away without making us feel bad about taking up the space - food is authentic and EXCELLENT Japanese - some items you've never heard of on this menu - well curated ! I am particularly partial to their beef carpaccio and Tofu Steak appetizers - makes a full meal - that tofu steak is huge and so good! Views are the best in town - right next to the Bay at the end of Pier 39 - you can see Alcatraz, Sausalito, Angle Island, Golden Gate Bridge - Views alone make this a worthy Pier 39 dining choice. NOT your typical tourist trap on the Pier - an excellent, clean, modern, outstanding Japanese restaurant.
The sushi was delicious, and the location quiet for such a bustling area. Would have liked a lunch special maybe?
We were there early so the restaurant was quiet. The Sushi was delicious and the views spectacular!
Really wish we had a better server. He was new, hadn't eaten the food menu and knew next to nothing about the food. I expect more when spending north of $80 for lunch!
Service and the view were wonderful. Food was ok. One of the 6 oysters was way too stinky. Sashimi were ok. We went here on Sat 7pm. There were a lot of empty tables and very few people were dining here.
Not worth it. Sushi was mediocre. Very surprised by the disappointment of this place being on Pier 39.
Took my family and my parents to dinner here for our first time dining. The food was good and the wait staff were excellent - very friendly and engaging with us as we dined.
Concerned with Pier 39 being such a tourist trap, but we were very pleased with the meal. Highlight was the fantastic view of the golden gate bridge and alcatrez island. Excellent service: prompt and friendly. Sushi was good. Would not recommend the lava hot rock entree however, I've had much better elsewhere.
Awesome California Rolls with real crab meat. Perfect view of Alcatraz.
We were seated and given one menu for a table of 5. The waitress stopped by about 10min after we were sat and she said be right back. We waited another 20min-25min and had still not seen our waitress and decided to leave. Terrible service in a spot with a spectacular view. Really disappointed.
Locals think Pier 39 restaurants are usually a total tourist rip off - NOT SO ! This is a restaurant that is DEFINITELY worth the trouble to visit and enjoy. We've been dining here for the past few years (we live very close by) a couple times a year and it seems to keep on getting better. The TOFU STEAK entree is incredible - Garlic Noodles side dish were so yummy and satiating - Beef Carpaccio appetizer truly excellent (one of my total favorites here) ! Even the bento box my husband ordered was done with the highest quality ingredients - the tempura was the best we've head anywhere to date. And the views are spectacular! Prices very reasonable for location and views provided - EXTREMELY CLEAN restaurant, too. Don't let the tourists have all the good food, LOL - be sure to indulge.
I ordered their Agedashi Tofu and Ahi Tuna Steak dinner. Tofu tasted fine but the quality of the tofu used was, to me, not the best as far as silken tofu goes. Ahi Tuna steak was horrible. First time they served it to me it was cooked well done when i specifically requested for medium. They gave me a second one which was cooked medium but the taste was horrible. It did not taste fresh and the dipping sauce that accompanied it did nothing for it.
Great views, food was okay. I've had better. Still worth the view. Cheap beer.
Never had sushi before this restaurant. Tried it out, found a few favorites! Awesome service, nice view, good menu selection for appetizers and entrees. Wish they had more dessert options, but whatever! I'd still come back to visit again!
We could see Alcatraz from out table. AMAZING!!
Went here for a special occasion with the family and had two coupons for the place. The prices were a bit on the higher side, since it is situated on the waterfront and at Pier 39 (can't be cheap). The folks there were a bit shortstaffed, but were very accommodating even though our coupons were not familiar to the new staff members. Food was okay, but as it is SF, there are definitely more places to try and see.
Very good sushi for Pier 39. Service was slow, but it was Christmas so it's understandable. Would not make special trip to go back, but better than other food on the pier!
This place was not even close to being OK.
It was the day before thanksgiving, very dead, which we thought was going to be great for service.
Service: Wow! Service was slow, waitress was talking to her friend the whole time vs checking on us.
Food: Food was so bad, old fish and horrible taste!
1, Appetizers: Our Ahi Poke was not fresh in anyway, tasted so bad I couldn't even eat more than a bite. Our miso so wasn't that hot. Can't really mess up edamame, so we are all of that. 2/10
2. Drinks: the house cold sake was ok. A little bit underwhelming but I'd saw for house sake 5/10
3. Our main sushi roles, 3, all were soft and mushy, like they had been pre-made and sitting. taste was not great at all 2/10
Overall, for $120 for two people, save your money and go somewhere else.
There are much better options for dining near the pier for this price!
We travel and eat all over the United States, and this may have been the most mediocre that we have encountered!
Food was decent, but very overpriced for what you got! Chicken was only warm, as was the rice...
I would definitely recommend going elsewhere when in the area! This place needs much improvement to make it worth what you pay! Seems they really don't know how to make Japanese food at all...
We ended up 30 minutes late due to overloaded public transit and crowds by the waterfront. The hostess did a fantastic job of still accommodating us, despite the fact that they had a large group due in soon after us. Great view, excellent food at a moderate price.
Way understaffed. After waiting 30 mins and still no drinks, we walked out.
Come here for the view. The food is good, but there are so many sushi places in SF with better food, service and presentation. The view is spectacular though. Hard to believe the place was almost empty on a Saturday afternoon around 2!
Great service. Excellent sushi. Overlooking the Bay. Just as expected for a tourist locale.
Unbelievable view of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and flocks of pelicans flying by on a regular basis. Also, a very nice martini menu.
Very poor service, low quality sushi. It seems the location them to think no effort is required. Avoid!
Hana Zen was a great experience. The food was delicious and the location is great. We sat by the window and watched the sunset while we ate.
