Hammocks Trading Company
Really great food. Our server (Trent?) was on top of everything, and had everything ready for our somewhat large party. The only complaint (not mine, just what I heard from the table) is that it was cold inside. I don't really mind, as I prefer colder temps.
Overall a nice experience with good service!
Three of us (my BF and I and another friend) went to Hammocks last Saturday night for dinner. We had heard that it was pretty casual and had good food and was a nice "neighborhood gem" - and all of that turned out to be accurate - we were not disappointed!
My BF and I are used to all kinds of restaurants (including Michelin 3-star restaurants in France) and enjoy dining at the entire range from fine dining to very very casual - depending on our mood, etc.
But some very important considerations: the food needs to be really tasty, the service should be at least acceptable, and the atmosphere should be pleasant.
Well, we were totally pleased with our experience - and we loved the fact that the menu was large enough - withlots of options - including even vegan items (which I myself sometimes order, although i didn't this time.) Anyway - we all 3 loved the place! We all there of us ordered something different - and weall agreed that the food tasted really, really good!
The atmosphere was fun - pleasant, not fancy - not too noisy, just a nice pleasant buzz.
Hey, sometimes you just don't want fancy.
It was pleasantly decorated - nice beach feeling, headboard, aqua and white, coastal feel. Really nice bar - nice Florida or California beach bar feel - you'd feel comfortable dining alone at the bar - plenty of TV's with various sports options. Yep - I'll be back. Would feel very comfortable recommending this restaurant to friends.
The service was very poor. . After 10 minutes I had to remind the server Not to forget the seafood chowder that I ordered. The server stated she did not forget but when my entrée of the fried catfish team the server did say she did forget and brought the chowder without a spoon. The fries were left off my order. The server advised us that there were no clean spoons and after five minutes she brought a very small plastic spoon to me that is usually part of a kit for takeout food. The soup became cold and was not as good as it would’ve been if it would’ve been hot. The crab cake that my wife ordered was to come as part of an arugula salad but this did not happen. This was our first experience at this restaurant and it would’ve been much better if the server would’ve been on top of things.
certainly casual - noisy but GREAT food + Trent's a terrific waiter,,, we found a new 'return often' spot !
2nd time to Hammocks and we will certainly be back. Service was excellent. Biscuits were dry and the oysters small. Everything else very good. My husband really liked their house beer.
Good sea food, oysters are excellent, service above average but served in an old building. We shall return
Great casual dining spot. The blackened grouper was excellent. The calamari was over breaded. Great value for the money.
Have been going to Hammocks for a number of years, but this might have been our last meal there. The only thing that was good was the service. The food was not so good. My salmon BLT was more like a salmon minnow, the bacon was not crisp, and the fries were soggy. Very disappointed because I've always liked this place.
Hammocks is our "go to" place and offers consistently good food and a friendly environment. They now have three versions of their famous grouper sandwich, (caribbean, southern, and classic), but we still prefer the classic. The platters are back and are wonderful. William makes a great chocolate cake and key lime pie to finish things off. We love fresh seafood and eat here often
It's usually very busy. I guess it was a good quiet night to go out.
When we first arrived, the parking lot stunk to high heaven of garbage and fish. The restaurant is across the street from an abandoned shopping center. The interior of the restaurant was quite dilapidated. The patio was a little better, but the food was below average. Our waitress, Shannon, disappeared halfway through the evening with no explanation. Would never recommend or go there again.
They were out of key lime pie. Disappointing. Food was okay for the price.
Hi Farita, I'm so sorry we ran out of the key lime pie. If you would like to let me know on your return visit, I'd be happy to bring you that key lime pie free of charge. I hope you have a great day. -Jason
Food is alway consistently good as is the service. Can be very noisy at peak times.
Went here for date night and waited 45 min for our food while the table next to us was attended to no less than 7 times. No offer to refill our drinks, no offer of more appetizers, no status of our dinner. When confronted on the status of our food, the waitress seemed confused about what we ordered and made up an excuse about the fryer being backed up even though that only impacted my side veggie of two, small fried green tomatoes. Eventually, the manager comped the entire meal.
Needless to say, this will be our one and only visit.
I am disappointed that HTC has discontinued the one half off oysters on the half shell from 4 to 6 pm. Will probably not return
Thank you for being a repeat customer at Hammocks. After 7 years of offering the 1/2 priced oysters we did change the special to $1 raw oysters but extended the timing to 11:00-6:00. The cost of the oysters on the special raised .29 a piece or @ $3.50 for a dozen. I believe it was Hurricane Barry that hit the gulf in July when many of the oyster beds were closed down and affected the supply. We still believe the $1 oysters are a great deal and hope you will change your mind to return.
Love the oysters and Grouper! Employees are friendly and the place is always clean.
Thank you TerreD! We hope to see you soon. - Jason
I picked this place for a birthday meal at 4pm on a Sat. So parking was fine, but if you come during busy hours, parking is limited. The cactus garden outside was much admired. I appreciated the casualness and decor painted in bright blues. I wanted to buy the thick, clothlike restroom napkins. I choose this place to accommodate a vegan, a gluten free requirement, a seafood lover and a meat lover. Our orders ranged the gamut of the menu. Food was only average tasting, I'm afraid, though there was plenty of it. We ordered 4 alcoholic drinks, 2 appetizers, 2 side sand 6 entrees, and they offered a free dessert for my birthday. I chose strawberry shortcake which was exceedingly dry so I only ate the strawberries. My son liked the parchment baked salmon, but the 1 bite I had tasted dry and unseasoned. Same for the grouper tacos I got on corn tortillas, though they were filling, since I couldn't eat much of the huge side of sweet potato fries. (Pretty good, I shared them). The gluten free diner finished her beef stew though she would have liked more gluten free options and when asked how it was her only description was "filling". (I don't think she read the menu, because there were plenty of options.) The recovering from colon cancer diner managed all the 6 colossal shrimp and fried okra which looked great. We had to remind the waiter twice of parts of the order. Once he gave us another table's order, even though it was a slow time of day. The 20% tip was automatically added on tables of 6 or more, but it was circled in red so that the payor doesn't double tip. The total bill was about $230. I doubt that I'll make this a favorite, but would still suggest others try it.
Our server, Trent, was amazing last night. We had a reservation for dinner at 7:45pm, so of course it was very busy. The food was amazing and Trent didn’t miss a beat.... he answered every single one of our questions very thoughtfully, and he was great about helping me find items to eat according to current clean eating preferences (aka limitations haha). We always enjoy this place, and we will be back!
Unimpressive grouper sandwich and asparagus. Chicken and dumplings were made with biscuits. Hush puppies good. Not the worst, but not good. Bad value
This place was amazing! Great service from Michael!! Can’t wait to come back!!
Thank you for the 5 star review! Michael is a true asset. He'd love to have you ask for him on your next visit. Jason
Good food and good service by our waiter named Vernon. We shall return.
I have been wanting to try and I was not disappointed. Vernon took amazing care of us, was nice, prompt, and answered about twenty of our questions very patiently. The food was very good - jalapeño hush puppies 🤤. They had a rotating “fresh catch” fish menu that had many notable options! I had swordfish, with Mexican corn, and mashed potatoes. Will definitely come back here!
I have been to hammocks before and liked it. Friday night was awful and I was so disappointed because it was supposed to be a special night with my home from college for the weekend daughter. It was barely half full, so a disappointing lack of buzziness for a Friday night. The food was mediocre, but the service... she was awful! Took forever to get our order, forever and a day for our check.. and she had a very weird personality. The owner was there and never came over to help though we were constantly looking around for our server. Also, I had a view of the very dingy, messy kitchen. If I felt comfortable with confrontation I would have tracked the owner down to tell him I’m not paying the check. Never going back.
Thank you so much for reaching out to us about your experience, I am very shocked and disappointed about the service you received. I apologize that we did not see you were in distress, I take pride in ensuring all of our guest receive outstanding service and will be holding training with all of our staff to ensure that this never happens again. I hope in the future you find yourself in our seats with a much better staff. - Alex FOH Manager.
Food was tasty and hot. Scallops could have been done a little more.
First time ever going there. Did not know what to expect with the open table reviews. The pictures on the website and on OpenTable don’t do justice to the restaurant. The restaurant was clean actually it was immaculate. The food was delicious. I had the fried shrimp with two sides. The shrimp was fresh and cooked superbly. The grits was some of the best I ever had. The green beans with bacon was very good wish it had less broth but was still very very good. Not on that side of town often but next time I am I can’t wait to go back. I can’t wait to go back.
Service here is usually at least “OK”, rarely is it phenomenal, but acceptable. This last experience was really bad. Plenty of servers and few people in restaurant, yet my wife’s order was completely wrong, it took over 20 minutes after our dessert arrived to get our coffee (had to get up and ask twice about it) and again had to wait over 20 minutes to pick up our bill & credit card....had to flag someone down to give it to our waiter who was nice enough, but seemed to be on perma-break our entire visit. Might go back, but it will take awhile before I give Hammocks another chance🙁
I am sorry to hear about your experience with us recently, I am shocked to hear our wait staff was less than phenomenal. I take a great deal of pride in trying to ensure every table receives exceptional service. After reading your review and a few others I am moved to retrain the whole staff to ensure this doesn't happen again. I hope you do visit us again soon and see our turn around, we truly appreciate every customers business. -Alex FOH Manager
Nice quiet lunch
The staff has always been gracious with our dining experience. We are excited to hear of the restaurant group's new opening and am looking forward to enjoying a meal there
Outstanding food and service!!
Food was just awful. We had been here several times in the past year and knew it wasn’t fabulous but it was never as bad as this time. Calamari had absolutely no flavor and the seafood gumbo was greasy! Fried shrimp and scallop basket had zero flavor for $18!! The bay scallops were so tiny they looked like crumbs of batter. If our bill had been 50 percent less, it still would not have been a good value. I was planning to tell the Manager or the server but no one asked if we liked our meal. We will not go back!
I really wanted to love Hammocks. A long-time fan of classic seafood shacks on the coast, I was attracted to the place and the menu looked great. My first visit was a busy Saturday night, and then service was really slow and frankly inattentive. It was a very busy night and the food was good, so I decided to look to come back on a weeknight to give them another chance.
Tonight was that night... and far, far worse.
We immediately noticed (though early in the evening) a number of uncleared tables and other diners obviously waiting a long time for their service. It started off a repeat of our first visit, with a ~20 minute wait to place our orders. Ready to keep things rolling this time, we ordered appetizers & entrees as soon as our server approached. The crab dip appetizer came out fine and was very good, so I felt good about what was to come. We finished the appetizer... and again noticed we had disappearing server. After another 20 minutes the manager came by and mentioned our entrees were late due to a large party. Then another 15 minutes (no server that whole time) our entrees finally arrived - dropped off by a different server.
I had a special coastal fish (a grunt) and my wife a pink snapper. Her fish was fine, but my fish filet was tiny (only about 2"x3") and extremely dry - even curled up on the edges. My dish of green beans was 90% broth, and my fries were cold. When I shared that with my server she went off to "tell the chef" but did not say what was being done. About another 10 minutes went by and she stopped by to say an extra filet was being prepared. By that time my wife was done with her meal, and as I couldn't make her wait longer I told the server to bring our check.
Finally, the manager stopped. She said she was never told of our issues. She offered to "take care of us". My check arrived, and it removed only the charge for the fish (the uneaten side items were not addressed). As I said I really wanted to love Hammocks... but won't be back.
Food was good but service was painfully slow.
This was the 2nd time we've eaten here within the past 3 months. I'm not sure what is wrong with the service but we waited over 10 min for someone to even great us at the table. It wasn't Super busy either. After we finally got someone to greet us and start waiting on us, everything was great. Food is always great!!
This actually is one of our favorite restaurants. They were overwhelmed today, and we had to wait for everything from our water to our food. The manager came out a couple of times, and it was really a disaster. The fish that I usually get that’s delicious, was flat had no flavor and really was not good. I will chalk it up to one bad night, and try one more time because as I said, we go to this restaurant often and the food is amazing.
Food was good, but the kitchen was having major issues. Waited about an hour for our entrees. Waitress was kind, but the kitchen wasn’t helping her out that night.
Love the casual, coastal, “beachy” vibe at Hammocks... Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious, and our server was friendly and attentive. The Creamy Crab & Artichoke Dip With toast points and Chef William’s Chocolate Cake we’re both TDF. A great spot to meet friends and enjoy outstanding cuisine.
I was a little worried when we planned a dinner here because some of the reviews weren't so great. We had a wonderful experience though! They accommodated our large party (11 people) and everyone we came in contact with was wonderful. The food was so good and the watermelon Mojito was amazing.
My friend and I share a birthday!! We all ordered the parchment salmon. Delish!!! We were bad and had Birthday desserts!! A fun evening!!
Ordered the Redfish which I tried before. The fish was dark brown (almost black) inside. The waiter said the fish was raw inside. Mgr/owner came over and took it away and I ordered something A very bad experience.
If I were the owner I would have made amends by saying
Something like I am sorry pls pick out a couple of desserts and coffee. That would have been a good business decision on his part. He did not. With the poor reviews I saw after our disaster we will not return....ever
Have eaten there twice before and loved it. This time however two of us ordered the American Red Snapper grilled @ $29 pp one was sent back and the other only 1/2 eaten. The webbing was left on the back so the fish was totally curled and you could not eat most of it. Did give me Salmon in its place and it was tasty but seriously salty. I'll come back in hopes it was just a bad day in the kitchen. It was super loud too.
