Hamilton's Grill Room Ratings and Reviews
Food was overpriced and nice but forgettable. I ordered the duck, which was literally 4 medium sized bites. My friend had the same and received a similarly miniscule portion. The other two people in our party had normal sized entrees. Mysterious. It was like they didn't have enough duck and divided the last portion in half to make enough for 2 orders. The food did not live up to the 20+ and 30+ prices on the menu. Hamilton Grill is not what it used to be. Still, it has a nice location and cozy interior. Centrally located for those who want to spend the day in Lambertville.
My girlfriend and I went here tonight for her birthday. Everything about the experience was great. Our server Kristin was so attentive and did an amazing job! I had the flash grilled lobster and it was the best meal I’ve ever had. My girlfriend had the rack of lamb and it was phenomenal as well! To finish off my meal I had a cup of coffee and it beat every coffee shops coffee i’ve had. I don’t understand how some can give such poor ratings as my girlfriend and I have never been disappointed, it’s an easy 5 stars. looking forward to coming again.
My friend ordered a well done strip steak without the sauce. It arrived underdone, and with sauce. She had to send it back twice, had and had to get up to find the waitress in order to do that. Each time it was brought back she neglected to bring her cutlery, and once again, had to get up to find the waitress to get the necessary utensils. It's not like the restaurant was crowded, we were one of two tables with customers. Now I understand why. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, not anymore.
We had an early reservation-6:00- and yet they were already out of items in the menu. It was my daughter's thirtieth birthday and she was really looking forward to the rack of lamb. We were very disappointed to learn they had run out. We ordered the clam chowder soup which was tasty but was mostly broth. We were to find out that they subsequently ran out of that also. It seems we must had gotten the last little bit. My husband had the flat iron steak which was tough. My daughter and I both got the NY strip. It was fine but uninspired. We were also seated by the door which proved to be very chilly. Overall it was a disappointing dinner.
Thanksgiving meal was awful. Food was badly prepared. Menu was strange. Crab appetizer was first and o.k.... Next, mushroom soup (button mushrooms in broth)...no flavor at all. Then a mayonnaisey Waldorf salad with cayenne and cinnamon??... very hot (spicy)...entrees we ordered : Turkey no gravy (tough and dry), dressing (drier) and with cranberry sauce poured on top (SO SOUR) served with beets (?)...Entree 2: Roast Beef that could not be hacked with a steak knife! Both were uneatable. Dessert: Pumpkin pie was under cooked and tasted like pure sugar. To cap off the night we ordered coffee (no espresso there). Delicious coffee...no cream, no milk...We were served Blue John (skim). The owner or manager asked how the meal was and I asked for real milk. ...she returned with whole milk and told me she had to go all the way to the pantry for me (I did not tell her the food was horrible)! Adding to this insult the restaurant gives us a bill that automatically includes 20% for the server. We like to tip well and the service was fine (excepting the manager) but let the buyer decide what the service is worth...? They even suggest you add a tip on top of their take. SICKENING.
The restaurant was nice enough as was the staff but I am giving it a lackluster review because of SMALL portions (the prices are high enough) and I have allergies and I was so limited to what I could it it was TRULY DISAPPOINTING. I am allergic to garlic and onion and, I have to say, most good restaurants are able to work around that, most chefs are willing to. Last night we ate at Karla's and they were able to give me exactly what I wanted working around my allergies. But here I was stuck having steak for an entree (not a huge fan of steak) and the one appetizer I could have (shrimp with anchovy sauce) was delicious but the portion was paltry. My husband also felt his appetizer portion (crab cake) was pretty paltry. We won't visit again.
We have eaten here several times and each time we have not been disappointed. There were 7 of us this time and Hamilton’s Grill Room Was very accommodating. Their front room is decorated stunningly with perfect level lighting. My crab cake was luscious and the butterscotch custard for dessert was heavenly.
An early Sunday. A walk by the canal path. Drinks at the Boat House. Dinner at Hamilton’s. We normally sit at the grill and enjoy the show. This time we sat in the front room with the view of the canal. Shrimp in anchovy sauce to start. This is a menu item that is uniquely wonderful, extraordinary sauce. Next scallops and steak au poivre. Both prepared perfectly, scallops gently grilled (or pan fried) with parsnip ‘mash’ and the peppercorn encrusted Delmonico was excellent. The quiet room, gentle tiny white lights above, attentive service- all made for a very enjoyable evening.
Had the oven roasted scallops they were great, companions had the crispy salmon, they liked it. Everyone had dessert, it wassail good. Hostess seated us at a nice table but near the door to entrance when we arrived, we asked to be moved and were seated in main dining room. Food good, service fine, noise a little much but it was an enjoyable evening.
We had heard from a knowledgeable source that Hamilton's Grill Room might not be what it once was...the source proved correct...two out of four entrees - the bronzino and the duck - were essentially inedible...the salmon - the other two entrees - was decent...the oyster appetizer (on deviled eggs??) was about the worst example of a fried oyster app I've had...our dessert for the table...i can't even remember what type of baked good it was supposed to be...but our waitress offered that it had been on the menu forever...was also inedible...the coffee was so insipid and tasteless that we sent it back...which we did with the dessert...and should have done with two of the entrees...the table next to us included several diners that were so loud and obnoxious that we finally had to have the manager come over and quiet them down...the other diners in the room kept on giving them dirty looks...why management did nothing on their own for almost a half hour is beyond me...i must say that our waitress and the rest of the staff were very cordial...and i have nothing but good thoughts for them...the food...not so much...and that really is why you're there in the first place...
Mixed night at Hamilton’s Grill Room. Second straight time that service was inattentive and kitchen was slow. Appetizers were good, but fish main course was a filet that had some bones, a pairing with broccoli rabe (odd combination) and a side of cous cous that was a roughly $8 flavorless boil-in-the-bag variety. They cook beef well and excelled again tonight. The dessert menu lacked creativity or innovation, seems to have been the same dessert menu for years. This once cool place seems dated and tired, taking customers for granted in an ever evolving and competitive restaurant environment . There were just too many misses tonight.
Arrived and was met with surly manager. Ordered only to be told that the two dinners we wanted were no longer available. Waited thirty minutes for our appetizers, which were not ours. Fifteen minutes later ours came out. A very small salad and oysters. At 8:00 after being seated at 6:35 we still had not eaten our main course. When we spoke to the manager he was disrespectful and arrogant. Waitress was extremely apologetic. We left! Will never return!
My seven-year-old daughter and I had a reservation at 5:00 on Saturday evening. It was a special evening since we rarely get to spend time together as just the two of us. My wife and I had dined here before and we always enjoyed it. Admittedly It is not the kind of restaurant that you should take your young kid, but my daughter promised to behave well. Fortunately she kept her end of the bargain and we had a wonderful time. The wait staff was gracious, welcoming and accommodating, and the food was wonderful (as it always is). Thanks for a memorable evening!
Would highly recommend the Hamilton Grill to anyone looking for great food, eclectic, fun, unique atmosphere! Food is fresh and creative, yet still provides the comfort and familiar flavors one would come to expect at a high end restaurant. One could simply sample the vast array of appetizers and specials, sans the main entree, and still come away completely satisfied. The wine pairings will always be perfect as it is BYOB! Bon appetit!
Walked in w/reservation but no one was up front. Person arrived but then took someone behind us before us who apparently was a regular. Hand written menu is hard to read. Waiter staff was rather "stiff" and the meal took a long time to arrive, perhaps because they had a party in the back room. Had soup which a bit watery and lacked flavor. Pasta itself was good, but gravy/sauce underwhelming. I couldn't identify much other than the tomato sauce. Fish was good but you didn't taste "the grill". Cheesecake slice was small. We've been to Hamilton 4 or 5 times. we've had pretty good and just average. This was about average. I think maybe its time to spruce it up a bit, focus a bit on service consistency and what comes out of the kitchen.
Normally I would have been delighted so take this single review of Hamilton Grill as possibly one where the waiter just was not into it. Secondly the menu could benefit from less salt everyone notice their meal was over seasoned. We will try it again because we have enjoyed the 10 other times.
Positives first. After I sent the menu special ribeye back, it returned cooked as I asked. The apple and bread pudding desserts were okay but nothing special. There were so many negatives that we'll never return to this place we used to frequent years ago. Carpets are threadbare, light fixtures crooked, it's the details. Only steak on the menu was a Delmonico for $35 -- pricey in these parts, but not for a very good restaurant. We ordered the ribeye special. The waiter did not tell us prices of any of the specials and we didn't ask because we brought a guest for her birthday. Big mistake. Ribeye was $45 -- way overpriced. They took advantage. Good cut of beef, but both orders under-done. If you charge steak-house prices, you'd better grill the meat right the first time. Salad had interesting greens, but was so dense and flat it didn't come off as a fresh salad. Dressing was tasteless. So was the piece of thick plastic I found in my mouth. Manager's solution? I'll take if off the tab and "I'll let the kitchen know." REALLY? My family is in the restaurant biz -- proper response was to comp the one meal entirely, offer a gift card, or at least comp dessert. I could have made a fuss but talked quietly to manager. Service was mediocre -- waiter said the right things but didn't take care of his table. We had to ask for water refills and look for the waiter by getting up several times. Coffee was good, but for $3 apiece we got only half cups and no offers of a refill. That's a ripoff. How they handled the plastic in my salad reveals the main problem -- Hamilton's focus is not its diners. Deleting the price of a salad I couldn't finish is not compensation for a nasty kitchen error. We're done with Hamilton's. Contrast to Bowman's Tavern, where a valet left mud in my car, manager offered real compensation. That's class. That's a restaurant focused on customers. Should have gone there. Will next time.
