Hamburger Mary's Ratings and Reviews
While in town from New York, visiting my brothers, we went to Hamburger Mary's for the Thursday Night Drag Show. I really enjoyed myself. The MC was super funny and the Drag Queens were super fabulous! The drinks were delicious, food was great. And overall, the Drags were beautifully a plus. I will definitely be stopping in again, next time I'm in LA :)
Brought a group of 18 to Mary's on a Saturday afternoon in June. Looked like there was only one person working? I made a reservation but the place was wide open, maybe only a couple other tables at 4:30pm that Saturday. I know it's busier later.
Food was pretty good and prices were reasonable! I hope the service times are better during busy times; our server was also the host and bartender which was awkward.
We went during a lull in the excitement, and I was less than impressed. The food preparation was meh (the "fresh veggie" side was clearly a standard frozen vegetable trio of broccoli, cauliflower and carrot); the wine options were ridiculously poor, the service was lackluster (although there were only three in our party and the dining room was otherwise empty, it took nearly an hour for two of us to get our food, while the order for our third was not put in at all), and the facilities are rather sad. I'm sure this would be a LOT more fun during the shows/evening party scene, when such things are less important. Clearly, the focus of the establishment is the shows and the mixed drinks. I plan on returning for the drag brunch for, you know, the sake of comparison.
Have been here many times and a long wait was expected as the place was packed. Tried it for lunch and with only a few people in the restaurant the service was the slowest of anywhere I have ever been. And the food was so so. Paid extra for waffle fries and got a few waffle fries and the rest were small pieces. Should have stuck with the regular fries. And $8.50 for a beer during lunch during the week. Way over priced and no wonder the place was pretty much empty. Lunch no more for me here.
We got there about an hour and half before the show started. It was a plesant evening. We got to eat dinner and have dessert during the show. We had a good time...Service wasnt too bad either for them getting SWARMEd around show time. There were a lot of food choices and it was a fun atmosphere.
The show was awesome and the service was great. The talent and staff were all very friendly and super helpful. The food definitely could use lots of improvement, the sampler platter my party ordered looked like someone forgot about in the fryer and remembered just before it turned black.
I usually avoid Hamburger Mary's because of the noise level and the distraction of their events at night. But this evening I wanted to celebrate my birthday there with a friend, so we went early enough that there were only one or two other diners. We had a nice table outside where we were able to hear each other talk, and the food was delicious! I had a drink that was a "single" but it was nice to actually taste the alcohol in it, when usually I am wary of drinks that are prepared out of my sight. Our waiter was professional and personable without being inauthentic. I felt like I was welcome there. I am very glad that I chose Hamburger Mary's, as this evening felt special.
I will describe one only thing I've found negative of this experience:
When I arrive with my friends, the waitress of the restaurant didn't found me in their computer, so they told me I didn't make a reservation. I show the confirmation mail of the reservations of 3 days before but she still didn't find my name in the computer, so they put us in the only table without reservation that they had. A table in the back of the room, very far from the stage. I was very disappointed. I had my confirmation e-mail which didn't help me at all
We arrived an hr early to be seated near the drag show but we were not. Guests at a closer table left, I asked the server if we could move to that table. The server told us that guests who arrived after us would be seated at that table even though he knew we were looking to sit closer and did not offer us the opportunity to move first since we arrived before the guests who were moved. Then I could not read the menu due to who dimly lit the place was. The server informed me they did not have a flashlight to offer me. I asked for the manager and he offered me his phone light to use. He also said I could ask the reservationist if we could have a closer seat. He said no but finally we got a closer seat thanks to the guy who bussed tables.
very casual, good burgers (although a bit overpriced, for that amount you can enjoy a great upscale burger at Comme Ca). Generous drinks but they're a little weak and the sweet ones are a bit too sweet. Avoid the sweet potato fries, go with the waffle fries. Fun late night games and big late night crowds. Go early if you want a quick, quiet meal.
