Hamamori has the best Sushi in Orange County. Sushi Chef Shinpei is a sushi magician. I recommend you visit Hamamori, but do not order from the menu, instead allow Chef Shinpei to create a series of sushi delights. From that visit forward, you will be hooked!!
We arrived during Happy Hour and so the sake carafe (wonderful and warm) and fabulous appetizers were at a reduced price. They also gave me a lovely birthday dessert on the house. Modern, clean, attractive environment located on the third floor of South Coast Plaza Crystal Court side.
Was not crowded on a Thurs. night, which lead to great service. Food was excellent. We had a window seat which most of them are and could see the holiday lights. It was our 48th anniversary and we let them know that: they put candles in our dessert. We had to be out by a certain time to get to the play and they kept on a good schedule. Down side is it is on the 3rd floor of the Crystal Court part of South Coast Plaza and parking is below. So we took escalators which do not line up and require walking to get to the next one after the parking garage. There are elevators but they were not on our radar. We came down one that is by the restaurant but then had trouble finding our car because there are a lot of walls in the parking garage.
Always the freshest sushi and excellent customer service. James Hamamori has been providing his customers excellent sushi from around the world. His Santa Barbara uni is delicious, as well as uni from Japan and South America. James combines uni with Wagu steak, toro, or foie gras. His toro, yellow tail, live scallops, sea bream, and sweet shrimp are all delicious. So many choices that you have to visit more than once.
This is a great place to take a break if you are shopping at South Coast Plaza. It's a cozy little place with a view of the bridge and innovative foods like the Okaki Coated Asparagus which was a pleasant surprise, not like the standard ones smothered in oyster sauce. The Crispy Calamari which is cooked in tempura batter which is a lighter and fluffier (and better tasting in my opinion). The Chirashi Bowl was the unanimous choice hands down for the group.
Went with a large party to celebrate Fathers day. Our entire experience was very disappointing, especially for an upscale sushi restaurant. Food quality was poor, service was poor, and when discussing the food problems we had with the server he didn't seem to care.
I had a reservation with flowers waiting. This was our first time dining here and it was perfect. The Omakase was really nice - being able to have items arrive to the table for us to eat until we were ready to stop eating was nice because it removes the anticipation for when the meal would be over - basically, it's not over until we said it was over - it was an excellent dining experience. Thank you so much.
Came her for Mother's Day lunch. Nice place. Great service. Sushi was disappointing. For the price, I expected much better quality. The Oh Toro was old and lack flavor. I should have sent it back. Soft shell crab roll was average, was not rolled well. Fell apart very easily. Mixed tempura was good. Sweet shrimp was good. Yellowtail was average. Lacks freshness and sweetness of fresh tuna that I'm used to. The Japanese Waygu sushi topped with fois gras was the only dish I would rate as excellent. The fresh water eel was average. Overall, a disappointing experience when it comes to the food. I expected more quality for the price.
Chef Hamamori may have a good reputation but I was disappointed with the quality of our meals: spring mix salad was not fresh, albacore sushi was spoiled, nabeyaki udon noodles was overlooked. For the price there are many better Japanese restaurants. The key to great Japanese food is freshness, taste, and presentation.
James Hamamori is one of the most talented sushi chefs in Orange County. We used to dine at Wasa at the Bluffs when he was there, and followed him to this upscale sushi bar at South Coast Plaza. The ambience is lovely, with lots of natural light, high ceilings and plenty of space. Those are all nice, but it is all about the fish. We have eaten at many of the top sushi restaurants in Orange County, with extremely fresh fish, but somehow Hamamori surpasses them. This includes Nanasan and Kitayama, which are both outstanding. This is better.
We ordered Omakase and let James prepare our dinner. The fatty tuna/ wagyu duo was out of this world. It was a meal to remember.
