Haliimaile General Store Ratings and Reviews
We chose this restaurant while we were on vacation because it was not in the tourist centers on Maui. The building is historic and interesting. The food was fresh and delicious— a good fusion of local ingredients and Asian flavors.
I also left my credit card there and they tracked me down via Open Table as I had no idea. Very kind of them.
Have had lunch in the past. This meal was dinner. We had a light dinner since we were traveling after dinner. We ordered the sashimi pizza - this was good, though not as good as we remember from our past lunches. The salads were disappointing. The beet and goat cheese salad - the beets didn't have much taste - more like they were out of a can. The HGS green salad was not very good either. Greens were not crisp and too much dressing and the dressing was not distributed throughout the greens. We have always loved the HGS, so are hoping this meal was an anomaly.
We have come here on several occasions--it is unique because of its location and has a local vibe. But my husband and I have to say the food was subpar for the cost-- the macadamia encrusted mahi mahi was overly done and small in portion. My ahi dish was good, but hot in seasoning and I felt I should have been forewarned! I have to say we were disappointed for a Gannon restaurant--and we miss Joe's also! Sorry!
We have gone here annually & enjoy the creative, healthy foods, and interesting art and decor. This rainy evening we arrived at 4:58 PM, ducked inside off the porch for the opening at 5 PM, and were told "Just a couple more minutes". No, "aloha folks, come in and get warm & dry." OK, strict start time, not very Hawaii. Not trying to break your rules. Can we sit down? the wet, chilly senior citizen couple asked. The greeter had to go ask someone. It was 5 by then. Here's an idea: "[smile] Would you like to wait at the bar for 2 minutes while we finish setting up, we'll be right with you? Mahalo!" Maui is getting a bit snobby and pretentious all over these days, and could stand to recover some aloha here & there. We did not know there was now a nice separate menu for vegetarians; fortunately a question we asked led to it being brought to table. Is that printed on the other menu? Food and server were very nice. Just that cold, damp greeting from the greeter that seemed different from prior years' visits.
As usual, excellent food. Wait staff was attentive, just right amount of attention. A little noisy, but that's probably because we're getting older :) My husband is still talking about the veal scallopini that he had - it was the best he's every had. I had the crispy duck, it was meaty, moist, and the skin was crispy - yum.
We went to the distillery for a tour and vodka tasting, then headed to a Happy Hour and dinner. It was well worth the drive. I could have just eaten my meal with the happy hour menu but only went for the meatballs which were great. For dinner, I ate an appetizer. My husband had an appetizer and dinner. Excellent food. Bartender super friendly. Even though we had to leave the beach early, it was worth it.
We always go the the Haile Mailed General Store when we are on Maui. The food is fresh and inventive, with enough creativity for foodies yet even picky eaters will find familiar food. Prices are no higher than any high end place. For two with appetizers, a drink, main courses, bottle of wine and tip we spent 180. Worth every penny. We are headed back tonight for apps and dessert.
The service was great, as were the cocktails (a bit on the pricey side). We had the crab pizza for appetizer (4 slices) which was yummy but a little heavy as an appetizer for 2 , best to only have a slice each so you have room for dinner. My husband ordered the Hawaiian Ahi Noodle Bowl which was super good. I ordered the Coconut Seafood Curry, which while tasty was way too heavy on the coconut and very spicy (which was a surprise and I am used to spicy food ), I had to try and shake off much of the curry as possible to be able to eat it. Overall it was good but a bit pricey. While nothing in Maui is cheap we found a lot of other places not as pricey with equally good food.
Very good innovative cuisine, excellent service and pleasant decor. I'd give another half star if i could. My only two complaints were the unfriendly greeting from the hostess and the restaurant doesn't have good acoustics (noisy). Our server Katie was tops!
Decor is a bit dated bright colors and lots of cob webs on the ceiling (there was a cane spider above my wife!) The service wasn't the greatest, took a while for us to get a couple cocktails, apps, and main dish. They were not busy, so it was unacceptable in that regard. I heard good reviews about the rack of lamb.. had better given the price. My wife had the mahimahi in which nothing special came out of it. Not the ambience for dinner, maybe happy hour or lunch would be more ideal. We were celebrating our Anniversary, probably not the place to celebrate anything special...
We had a early birthday dinner for my gf. Our server was Sandra, she, was awesome. The pupu's were ono that we ordered so much that by the time dinner came I was to full to eat it but it made sure we had dessert.
The only thing that upset me was I had my dinner packed to go because I was unable to finish it, I had more than half of my food left when it got packed. I was super excited to finish my food the next day. When I warmed it up and sat down to eat it I ONLY had 2 pieces of steak left out of my whole plate! I asked my gf and my daughter if they ate any (which would have been fine) and both said no. So was not happy that I paid for full meal and only got less then half. I wanted to call and make a complaint but ended up not calling. The next time I go to any restaurant I'm checking my to go plate just to make sure. If I'm going to pay for it I'm going to want to take it ALL home.
Thanks Sandra for being such a great server.
My wife and I came here for our special honeymoon dinner. We were told by our neighbor at home, the best meal she ever had came from this restaurant. From the entire staff (Elizabeth was exceptional), to the cocktails, and mainly the food, everything was top notch. After the experience at this wonderful place, I have to concur with my neighbor.
As always, the General Store offered great food as well as helpful and friendly staff and management. We make it a point to go here a couple of times on every trip to Maui. I like to try new things on the menu, but tend to stick with seafood. My husband loves the rack of lamb. Can't go wrong!
This restaurants is one of our favorites. We make a point of dining here on our way to the airport if we have the red eye flight. They have fast, friendly service and their meals are always wonderful. We have not had a bad meal here. I would highly suggest Haliimaile General Store, don't let the name fool you!
The restaurant is very quaint but very noisy. We were seated in the main room to the back, it was a very hot day and the room was very, very hot (near the kitchen). We had the Mahimahi and the curry shrimp. I felt both could have had more seasoning, they were a bit bland. Will try it again, maybe due to the heatwave things were off that night.
Went with family on recent visit to Maui. I had the coconut shrimp which was excellent and my husband had the ribs which were fall off the bone delicious. I also had a lava flow to drink and it was the best one I’ve ever had. The service was great and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We will definitely add this to our list of favorites for eating on Maui
