Haliimaile General Store
Our son gave us a gift certificate for our trip to Hawaii. Our evening was delightful, friendly staff, delicious food and great company. Do not leave without trying the pineapple upside down cake— beyond delicious!
Wonderful meal!! Delightful evening. Beautiful place to end a wonderful vacation. Not to far from the airport; only several minutes by car. Delightful.
Having already tried Mama's Fish House and Lahaina Grill, I was looking for a restaurant I haven't tried for my birthday. Even though I saw other restaurants that I was interested in trying, I didn't want to go to a really expensive restaurant as my bf spent a lot of $ for my birthday gift, spent $ on a lot of the other places we went to trying sweets from different places, and paying for our lunch. I read reviews on Haliimaile General Store on Open Table and other websites. I had mixed feelings about trying this restaurant as reviews were so/so. While there were some really good reviews, there were others that have said it wasn't as good as before or that it wasn't that great. I decided to take a chance as I would be going in with low expectations. We order 2 appetizers that I read in reviews were really good-crab pizza and sashimi napolean. My bf orders the soup of yesterday--lobster bisque, brie and grape quesadilla, and caesar salad. He didn't find any entrees that caught his eye. I saw something I planned to order but didn't because we were eating all day, plus, bf was paying for dinner. We thought the lobster bisque was a little rich, didn't like the crab pizza. For me, the grape didn't work with the brie. I think I like savory things in my quesadilla and like some kind of protein like chicken, pork, beef. My bf liked the quesadilla. We both liked the sashimi napolean. We ate about half, maybe a little less of the crab pizza and about half of the lobster bisque. While they asked if we wanted a box/container to take those items home, they never asked if there was something wrong with the dishes. Some restaurants go the extra mile and take it off the bill if you don't eat all your food. While I wasn't expecting them to take it off the bill, that is nice when those restaurants do. Another disappointing thing was nobody acknowledged my birthday. Some restaurants give you a complimentary dessert. Not expecting it but they didn't even just say "Happy Birthday".
We had a great dinner at Haliimaile General Store with very attentive service. The grape and brie quesadilla was excellent the barbecue ribs were great. As always, the pineapple upside down cake was phenomenal -- the best we have ever had. The wines by the glass selection were very good.
Food was great, as always. Service was excellent and friendly. Love the casual feel for dining Upcountry, always run into old friends. Great spot to go after an art reception at Hui No’eau.
service is good, the server was nice explain the special order, the ribs was good lots of meat
Drinks are always top notch! Service is always impeccable. Their Mahi Mahi always seems to be overcooked and on the dry side. The accompaniment is always excellent though. The scallops were cooked to perfection but the risotto lacked flavor. Lobster bisque and “popcorn” shrimp were amazing! I would stick to drinks and pupus or avoid the Mahi altogether.
Terrific meal and absolutely charming server. Couldn’t have been better. The Napoleon Sashimi is just amazing.
We travel to Maui once a year for vacation from Philadelphia PA and we always make this our last stop for dinner before boarding our plane. Everything is excellent here and the staff is very attentive to your needs. The prices are great too. We just love this place and can't say enough good things about it.
Loved the place but they could get my drink order right, but the food and service was top notch
Every time we are in Maui we look forward to our dinner at The General Store. We were excited to bring our mother here for her 80th birthday. Sadly the experience was just not up to par. The food wasn't so great and the service was lacking. It seemed to us that everyone was running around being busy and completely ignoring us. The apps we ordered were dropped like a hot potato on our table only for us to bite in and find it cold. Took us a while to flag someone down to ask if the spring rolls were meant to be served cold. Once it was corrected, no one ever came back to check on us. The mains - same thing - drop and run. No explanation of the items brought on the side for the curry, and no one asking how we were enjoying our meal. We felt rushed, unrelaxed and a bit on edge. Definitely not the Aloha experience we expect from the top restaurant in Maui. Next visit we'll set our sites on trying someplace new.
Everything was very good and well prepared. The service was prompt but at times we felt rushed to finish making our time there not as leisurely as we might of liked as tourists. Several people, including someone who identified himself as an “ owner” stopped by our table to ask us how everything was so we took the time to tell him we didn’t like expeditor delivering the dishes with his fingers all over the rims of our orders and that, perhaps, the big soup bowl could have been brought to us with a plate underneath. The plates are carried from the kitchen all the way to the tables so the food server has to put his hands “ somewhere”- we aren’t blaming HIM. We realize most kitchen staff prepares food with their bare hands but once it leaves the kitchen we would just like to think all possible sanitary methods of delivery are being utilized. This aspect added to the noise level added to the feeling of being a bit rushed by constant interruptions from staff forces us to only offer a four star rating.
As always the General Store’s food and service were second to none. It is a staple for a night out with friends and family in search of a good time. Pineapple upside-down cake.
Very good. Not outstanding.
Love this restaurant! Great food, great location, and great staff.
The seafood curry and lime coconut daiquiri are outstanding!
What a nice surprise! We tried Hailemaile and were delightfully pleased with delicious food and great service. I had tender short ribs and creamy polenta and my husband had a spiny lobster tail special. Going back again soon!
Always exceptional food and a great atmosphere.
We have been coming to the General Store since it first opened and even had our wedding dinner there in Oct. 2005. We come to Maui every year and always make a point to have dinner here. However, this was the first time we had a terrible experience. We arrived at 6:45 for our 7:00pm reservation on Jan. 2. The place was crazy loud and we were seated in the back room with lots of energetic diners and you couldn't even hear yourself talk. We asked to be moved and they accommodated our request to move to the front room, which was somewhat quieter. I had brought a bottle of champagne to have with our dinner and told our waitress that we were willing to pay corkage (my big mistake - I had not called ahead and inquired as to what the corkage charge would be - my fault). We ordered our meal with our waitress and that was literally that last we saw of her. We even had to ask her to open our champagne and she never returned to refill our glasses - oh well - we were certainly capable of doing that ourselves. Our appetizers, salad, and entree arrived being served by others - which is OK - they had no idea what ordered and didn't seem to care either - just get the food out to the people and move on....it felt really impersonal - not what we had experienced here previously. Our waitress finally reappeared and asked if we wanted dessert....then the bill arrived - are you ready for this? $45 for corkage! I was shocked but then again - I had not asked what the charge would be. I had called ahead and asked if we could bring our champagne and they said no problem - they just left out the fact that it would cost me almost $50 to drink it there. I have been to many high end places in SF and have never encountered such an outrageous corkage fee. When I questioned the waitress she just shrugged her shoulders and said "that is what it costs here". Needless to say, we were disappointed in how things have changed since we first started coming to the General Store. We will not return.
We’ve been Haliimaile General Store devotees since they opened oh so many years ago and we always will be! Sooo good!
Be aware that portions are massive.
Best dinner that we had in Maui. Great waiter and service. Coconut curry shrimp and scallops was the best!
The General Store is one of the best spots on Maui. Unique dishes, great service, and an authentic atmosphere that does not feel forced or overdone.
On this visit, our group of six got all different dishes: rack of lamb, prime rib with spiny lobster tail, ahi noodle bowl, scallop risotto, Mac nut crusted Mahi, and the coconut curry seafood bowl. All were good. The lamb stood out as outstanding, and the scallops in both the curry and risotto were perfect.
Bev’s restaurant has never disappointed, and we’ll be back the next time in town.
Off the beaten path but IMO, it’s the best food in Maui.
I hate to leave a bad review. However, my steak was cold. The broccoli was under cooked. They gave me a new steak but by the time I got it my spouse already had eaten his food. His green beans weren't cooked, inedible. I ordered a drink on the menu and asked to have gin. When I got the drink I thought something was missing, sure enough it was the coconut juice. I asked the waitress what was missing and she said the coconut juice because she assumed I didn't want the coconut because I ordered it with gin. They quickly corrected the problems but 1 bad thing was terrible but everything added up and made the start of our evening unpleasant. Sorry I hate to leave a bad review but it wasn't pleasant at all.
New Years Eve
My only negative is a glass of wine is $13 minimum. Loved everything else.
I made a reservation to celebrate my 12th year anniversary. Parking was next to the restaurant. Upon entry the professional and courteous staff greeted and seated us. At 5:15 we were seated at the front window which provided us with a spectacular sunset sky view over historic Hailemaile for our entire meal. We enjoyed the mixed drinks and appetizers which showcased both the quality of local culture cuisine and fresh ingredients. We were very pleased with the taste of the braised short ribs and braised pork shank. The restaurant and bar were completely filled before we left We rate this experience outstanding based on the exemplary customer service of the hostess, bussers, food runners, server, bartenders, manager and the delectable taste of the artistically presented food and the quality of the 4 drinks we had.
The was good! The service was excellent! Very courteous and professional service! Love the atmosphere here! Very nice restaurant to look at! Recommend trying it! You’ll love it!
The atmosphere in this restaurant is casual Hawaiian...love it! Lovely, elegant, but not formal and stuffy...The service was excellent as was the food. One small irritation was that we were seated in the area next to the bar and for a time, while other patrons were waiting for their table, they were standing at the bar and kind of crowding around the backs of some of the people at our table which was slightly annoying. The restaurant was also quite loud at times but the food was delicious and it more than made up for the small irritations. I would definitely recommend it to my friends and plan to go back again.
Great food. Great service. Good value for what you get.
Amazing dinner. Never disappoints.
Loved the out of the way for us location.
Food was excellent. But I have a problem with timing and service when I’m finished my appetizer before my bottle of wine arrives. Probably won’t come back.
Been coming here since they opened ! Love love love this place . Favorite on Naui ! Always fantastic ! Their new salmon entree was wonderful! Lilkoi margRitas are the best anywhere! Tony the wIter has been there for years and is wonderful!
Always an excellent and exceptional meal at this great spot in Maui.
Server was great. Food was served cold. Had to involve management. Owners were in the restaurant- never came over to apologize. Too busy at bar entertaining celebrities... Tried to buy us off with free dessert and pay for cold meals... Gannon’s owns several other restaurants which we have never had a issue with food or service. We waited a long time to come here and were disappointed... A restaurant with this reputation should not have had these issues. We came early to avoid the big rush. Waited an hour from appetizer to main meal. Server told us they were getting a large party out for a flight. Other people received their meals before us who came after... If service is your business then this should not have happened... One bowl of cold soup, an hour gap until dinner and then two of the six entrees stone cold... This is a $100 a head place for dinner with cocktails and appetizers... Save your money this is not worthy...
Simply sublime. We visit every year during the holidays. The food, the service and the ambiance surpassed our memories. Thank you for offering us something new and amazing.
Everything was very good, pulled pork sandwich, chicken sandwich, and pork pie, but didn’t love the back room. Dessert was awesome, Love jar and Chocolate cake.
We had Christmas dinner here on our honeymoon. It was our first day on the island and we were very impressed. The crab pizza appetizer set the tone with an explosion of flavor. Great ambience and service as well.
