Halcyon, Flavors from the Earth Ratings and Reviews
The food was great. The restaurant was quiet, even with the ACC crowd making noise outside. We had our wedding reception here the year before, and they remembered having us, and even treated us to a glass of prosecco, and a non-menu item desert, which was amazing. The service there is always top notch. We will be returning.
We had a reservation for dinner prior to a show. Let the waiter know that we had to be out at a specific time. Food was not served until after the time we had to leave. We all ate a few bites and left most of the food. Apologies given and offer for dessert after the show, but too little too late. The charged the entire price! All of us were disappointed and late for the show.
The food is always very inventive. They do an excellent job with the appetizers and the entree's are creative. We always experience a high level of service and have found the wait staff to be very helpful with a selection of wine. This is one of the best restaurants in Charlotte.
We stopped in for an afternoon cocktail a couple of weeks ago when visiting the Mint - which was a really delicious mojito - and got a look at the menu. We were so impressed at the selections that we promised ourselves dinner there the next time we were in town....
Our home is two hours away but we booked a show at the Knight and an early pre-theater meal at Halcyon.... Dinner was worth every minute of the drive! From the warm friendly greeting when we arrived to the chorus of good-byes as we left, everything about the experience was perfect.
The location is terrific, as it is in the Mint building, and only steps away from the Levine Center, Knight Theater, Mint Gallery and parking garages. We arrived at 5pm, had a bottle of perfectly chilled prosecco, ate four courses with dessert and coffee, left at 7:15, and were in our seats before the 7:30 curtain went up! (Thanks, Allison!)
Must haves include the Scallops with Pork Belly, Farro Salad, and the Warm Apple Cake for dessert. Our to-die-for standout was the Alaskan Halibut! Beyond delicious, with cauliflower and crab souffle and a zucchini and green onion cake, it is the best prepared fish we have ever had!
Will we go back? Yes, please!
We were always curious about this restaurant & finally decided to give it a try. The menu is rather limited, many apps & small plates with only a limited choice of entrees. Our food good, one of us had halibut & the other had a combo of swordfish & calamari. Our major complaint is the exorbitant wine prices! Actually, more expensive than New York City, which we recently visited. For this reason, we probably will not return.
Great uptown location with a view of the main strip. Great for people watching and just a feel good environment. It is on the second floor, therefore you are looking down at people on the sidewalk outside of the theatre and museum or overlooking parts of the city if you sit inside. Very expensive for the quality of food. Great presentation of the food, great décor and apparently good drinks as some just stopped by for that. I imagine the location is a huge draw as well. Outdoor seating was fabulous. I had Alaskan Halibut and it was a tasty dish but not for the $37 dollars I paid. I also had the salmon spread for the appetizer which was a complete waste of money. It looked like it was fresh out of the tuna pouches you find at local grocers. I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend unless perhaps you are just doing drinks and looking for a great location to hang out uptown. Two thumbs down!!
Really good and creative appetizers and entrées - food almost always special. Service was very uneven, with bar service lagging food delivery, hence not well matched. Despite an early request bread came after one of the guests had finished her soup. Thoughtful response without our asking: Two of the glasses of wine were comped - nice touch. We always look forward to Halcyon - Hoping for more efficient service and timing next go-round. This is - at its best - one of the top CLT restaurants. We'll be back.
Another very good dinner at Halcyon. The duck was absolutely superb. The only problem with this restaurant for us is that the dining room can get quite noisy when populated, and so eating outside (weather permitting) is our choice for quietness and a great view of city buildings. The noise is fun, but at times interferes with conversation.
Perfect for foodies! Beautiful rooftop dining overlooking the city of Charlotte. From the charcuterie (you select the ingredients yourself) and blue cheese soufflé to the foie gras, everything was amazing and perfect including the service! I highly recommend.
Very good ambiance, and as always, excellent servers. My only complaint is that while we expected a higher-end meal with pricing that goes along with that, there is not an entrée on the dinner menu under $34. I think that is excessive. The small plates were not appealing to the octogenarians I brought along. Those might have been a solution, but no one wanted foie gras or pork belly as their entire meal. Some options in the $25-$27 range are common at other high-end restaurants so I would have been more satisfied to see entrée offerings in that range. I probably will skip dinner there in the future, but will go for lunch.
I took my parents to dinner at Halcyon on a Saturday night. We had reservations for 7PM. When we arrived, the restaurant had many open tables, so I don't think a reservation was entirely necessary. We started with cocktails, and dove into a few of the spreads and a small plate for an appetizer. We ordered the baba gannoush, a goat cheese, and the blue cheese souffle. Baba gannoush was oddly sweet and had cinnamon notes. We would have preferred a traditional flavor profile. The goat cheese (paired with apples, honey, wine soaked raisins, and breads and crackers) was phenomenal. The blue cheese souffle was the highlight though! With heavier appetizers, we had lighter salads and soups for dinner. Salad portions were small and dainty; however, they totally delivered on taste!
My only complaint of the night was that I had called in before we arrived to arrange for a special dessert to be brought to the table as a surprise for my parents--they were celebrating their anniversary. Unfortunately, the message that it was a surprise did not translate, and our server asked the table if she could bring the special dessert as she was clearing our entree plates.
Otherwise, no complaints!
Great spot. Outside is best for moderate temp. days. But ambience abounds oitside and in. The entire staff was fiendly and helpful and we interacted with several during our lunch. If time permits make time to visit the museum. Or plan like us to go back for the same.
A great experience overall.
Ceviche is a great way to begin your meal, along with roasted vegetable spread and small peppers. The blue cheese soufflé is to die for. It's a "must try." Next, the duck or the scallops are a great choice. End with peach cobbler or warm apple cake with cardamom ice cream and a cappuccino. Halcyon is my fave!
My husband and I treated guests from out-of-town to lunch at Halcyon. We each ordered a different dish, and all were wonderful! The wine selection was very nice and service was excellent! I love the views and the ambiance. The music stayed nicely in the background...this is one of a very few Charlotte restaurants that allow for a relaxed conversation! Our guests were very impressed, and the 'locals' will definitely be back! In fact, I've already invited a friend to join me next week for a belated birthday lunch, and I'm looking forward to trying another wonderful creation!
Have been there 2 times now and each time the menu and not been very good. We reserved a table on the deck to find out when we arrived We told we can not reserve a table on the deck and had to wait for the table. The menu was limited and not what was online. We gave it a second chance but will not be back.
We have eaten here several times and always enjoy the food. For some reason this time the chef appeared to be heavy handed with the salt. Just about everything we ordered was a little saltier than we would have liked. It did not make the food inedible just different. In the future we will remember to ask for no salt and add what we need.
