Overall great experience. Service is prompt but not in your face, with food thoughtfully prepared.
Not bad but certainly not memorable. The soup of the day was a broth of some sort with a few lentils for 9 dollars. I don't mind paying 20 dollars for soup if it good. It just was not great.
Well at least the view is good.
Our meal was fabulous! We had the Bleu Cheese Souffle as a starter. It was fluffy and flavorful but the bleu cheese was not overpowering. The Salmon and Sole entrees were also stars. The Salmon is a large portion so could easily be split.
After our first visit to Halcyon, we bought a Mint Museum membership so that we would be able to get a discount on future dining - we enjoyed it that much. For our first visit we were taking our son and his girlfriend out for a nice lunch, and it did not disappoint. The food is creative without being fussy, the service is attentive but not intrusive, and the ambiance is elegant but comfortable. One would expect that a restaurant attached to a museum of design would be well designed, and it is. The cool surfaces of the floors and walls are balanced by the warm wood tables and chandeliers and the large, comfortably upholstered chairs. We've never been there when it was a good temperature for outside dining, but the patio looks like it would be beautiful during good weather.
Both times we've eaten there we've ordered some cheese/charcuterie, and although the cost can add up very quickly, it is fun to try new cheese combinations, and they are always accompanied by an assortment of flatbreads, honey, and a smattering of other little goodies.
On the most recent visit, my husband ordered a turkey pressed sandwich with fries. He said the sandwich was delicious, and I can attest to the fact that the fries were also, since I stole a fair amount of them. I ordered an endive salad with roasted beets and a delicious creamy dressing. It looked small, but was more filling than I thought it would be, and the combination of flavors was very balanced and unexpected. Coffee was delicious, and although I would have liked to try some dessert, we didn't have room.
We did see the family at the next table had ordered the french toast, and it also looked wonderful! My husband and I both said that this would be a place that we would gladly bring out of town guests to lunch or dinner and feel confident that it would be a great experience.
Halcyon was a gem of a find. It appeared during my online search for organic restaurants in uptown Charlotte. Not long after fighting a cancer battle, I was looking for a restaurant to dine at for a special date with my husband. It did not disappoint but exceeded our hopes. Not only does their menu include organic & local farm to table fare but also some imported from other countries such as Italy. Their chef(s) are creative & there is always something new and deliciousto try on the menu. Even beyond this is the ambiance. My husband who is an artist himself, and I were both delighted with Halcyon's interior design. It is intimate with a taste of elegance yet earthy & artistic at the same time. I have been back there 3 more times since the first & it has become our dining go to before attending an event or performance uptown.
The food was excellent, as always. Had the blue cheese soufflé - mouth watering - and the scallops and pork belly - exquisite tastes. If you want excellent food this is place.
Excellent food and service!!!
Fabulous food and service as always!
Overall excellent place. The waitstaff was superb! She made the evening for us!
Felt rushed by server...I give the benefit of the doubt that they are used to people going to shows but we were not and made that clear.
And the biggest issue is the chairs scraping across the concrete floor...like nails on a chalkboard. Easily fixable problem by putting pads on the feet of the chairs.
We got several small plates to try different options. The Blue cheese soufflé was amazing!!!
Halcyon has never been anything but perfect . We have enjoyed lunch, dinner and breakfast on the weekends. The food is delectable and always wonderfully seasoned. Staff as good as the food. Why would you go anywhere else?
The Dover Sole was outstanding and so was our waitress Maria. Next time we want to try sitting outside, but were going to the Alt Sounds/Symphony at the Knight Theatre and of course I didn't want to have the windy hair look going there. But it's the perfect eating spot before a performance at the Knight.
We visited Halcyon in July and the food was incredible, we had a hard time narrowing our choices as there were so many items we wanted to order. Unfortunately, this time was totally different. Upon arriving, our hostess was great as we wanted to sit at a 4 top table and she moved us from a 2 top and was very nice about our request. We preceded to order 2 glasses of wine and my $17/glass of red was not good, tasted flat with no flavor, like it had been sitting in a opened bottle for 2 weeks. Our server was very nice and got me what my husband ordered and was very accommodating. While looking over the menu, we were surprised that there just weren’t that many items that looked good so we only ordered 3 items:salad, duck confit pasta and Dover sole. The salad was great, pasta was undercooked and very hard/chewy but the sauce was good and the Dover was flavorless, it needed more herbs or something to give it some taste. We hope they look at their menu and come up with new items and get a new chef who knows how to cook. Sorry but we love good food and Halcyon was a dissapointment😢
Food had nice presentation but was very bland. Ambiance and location are great.
Halcyon is one of my favorite dining spots. The food and service are always exceptional.
A bit rushed - we told them we had an event and allowed 2 hours for dinner but they kept telling us how busy they were and the kitchen was backed up. Still one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Order the cheese soufflé- you’ll wish you had ordered 2.
We dined at Halycon for an at-work bridal shower! We had a reservation, therefore, once we arrived, we were promptly seated at a beautifully craved wooden table that sat in the middle of the room! The food was delicious and the service, even better. We could not have asked for a better server than Allison - she was very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive! We will definitely go back - particularly in warmer weather so that we can sit outside and enjoy the view!
Food and service was excellent
Excellent service and very good food
The ambiance, service and food were all exceptional!
All staff was friendly and accommodating. Food was beautifully presented and the flavors were amazing.
Wonderful meal! Very creative. Outstanding Duck tortellini and the most tender and delicious venison I have every had. My wife loved her Salmon en crote. Cant believe we havent been here before. will be returning soon.
Likely the worst dining experience I ever had. The service was initially pleasant. But at the point at which Terminated the evening I was without an entree and had finished the bottle of wine. Poor and insincere communication made this a bad experience
Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a fantastic fine dining experience.
Blue cheese soufflé was heaven in a dish.
One of the best farm to table restaurants. Great restaurant for a romantic evening. Highly recommended for foodies.
Love love all about this restaurant! Great drinks and menu changes enough for variety
Atmosphere comfortable and quiet enough for good conversation. Service great . . . there when you need something, but never intrusive. Food was excellent. I had brussel sprouts salad with salmon (gluten free) and she had scallops with the kale salad . . . We both loved every bite! Server made sure we were done in time to catch the pre-concert talk at Knight Theater.
Great experience at a really excellent restaurant. We are foodies, and we loved the creative food! You are committing a crime if you don't order the bleu cheese souffle. I would have rated it higher but they didn't give us a table next to a window, and I had reserved. They did give those tables to people who came in right before us without reservations.
This was an excellent restaurant, unfortunately I arrived at 4:15pm and we were expecting lunch menus and got dinner menus instead. Since it specifically stated that dinner starts at 5:00pm. It was a transition time and I wasn't excpecting dinner priced items. For the price (dinner) only, I felt it was not a good value... but still excellent food.
We had a great lunch with friends prior to a play. Food was generous, very good. The wait were attentive...and funny!
Your life depends on going to Halcyon. How can you say you’ve lived if you’ve never even tried it?
Some items are bold, some are traditional. They’ll take any whim you have and then it into a premium meal. I subbed out parsnip purée for Brussels sprouts and mushrooms. They made horse radish grilled Brussels sprouts (they tasted good - Brussels sprouts tasted good) and sautéed the HoW mushrooms (that good stuff) in a red wine reduction. The deer cut like butter and there was just enough sauce to taste that and the meat.
That’s called excelling, no two ways about it. McNinch has nothing on this place other than the stuffiness.
I was rather disappointed by the menu - there were very few main choices, and the majority of choices listed were too over the top. There was nothing that immediately resonated with me. I have been to Halcyon many times, and often my husband and I will order a few small plates and then split a main dish. Again, the menu did not lend itself well to this. Hopefully this was a one off because typically we do enjoy this restaurant
The only thing keeping me from giving a 5 Star was the rude treatment at the end of the evening. We had reservations for 8pm. They close at 10. At 9 6 tables still had people and they shut music off and began cleanup. It was rude and made us feel like we were being ushered out the door.
Birthday dinner with my husband was quiet and the service was wonderful! Everything was fresh and hot and came out fast.
A very nice dinner. Restaurant is lovely. The staff is attentive and helpful. Food is good but not outstanding. The wine list is unique and the staff know it well.
First time dining here at Halcyon, really enjoyed the experience.
Delightful from start to finish. Was a pleasure to blog the experience. A_la_Model
