Halcyon Brasserie Ratings and Reviews
We've been to Halcyon a number of times and always have enjoyed it, but this time it was disappointing. I had the caesar salad and the spicy frito misto. Both seemed as if they had been plated earlier in the day--lettuce soggy with dressing, the fried shrimp and calamari also somewhat soggy and chewy. My husband liked his clam chowder and the tuna in his appetizer. But the tomato salad that accompanied the tuna was drowned in dressing and not as fresh as it should have been. We won't be going back anytime soon.
This restaurant although very pretty was a disappointment. A special salad with duck and fruit was the only thing I liked. The fish was properly cooked but the dishes were loaded up with sauce which pretty much ruined it for me. Beside the unnecessary calories the taste of the fish was obliterated. One of us asked the waiter if the lemon pie had meringue on top. He said yes but it turned out to be whipped cream instead. The restaurant gets extremely noisy as the evening progresses.
My wife and I had a wonder dinner. Started with fresh bread with a plate of flavorful olive oil and the sweetest balsamic vinegar for dipping. Shared an order of super fresh jump crab. Entrees were halibut with a fantastic sauce and a large fresh greens salad on the same plate. My wife had cod over cannelloni beans and a light pesto sauce. Both were delicious. We added a side order of thinly cut parmesan french fries. They were awesome. Service was very professional and attentive. We had wine by the glass for $10 per 8 oz carafe. You can see they spend a small fortune on the decor, with beautiful wood and marble throughout the restaurant.
As much as we enjoyed ourselves, this place has a severe personality disorder. On one hand it's a fine restaurant with nice atmosphere, good service, and a fairly varied menu. On the other hand....and glass partition.... is a lively bar area, and a big screen TV that doesn't help with the already very high noise level at Halcyon. The food is worth the trip, but i think with it's sister bar Egan's next door, it could be more a restaurant than a bar, though i don't see it happening. Be warned the crowd, and the marble walls both add to a VERY loud dining experience
What would have been an exceptional dining experience was RUINED by the horrible service. We were a party of 4 on a Saturday night. The place was busy (which made the noise level very high), but small enough that the servers should not have been overwhelmed. We saw our server when we sat down and when we ordered. Everything was delivered to the table by runners - no interaction from our server until we complained about not getting a refill on our wine. It was really quite disappointing, since the food was fabulous. We were hoping for a nice dessert, but the server would NOT come to the table. When we finally flagged him down to inquire, he just dropped the check (didn't even ask if we wanted coffee)! Not worth the VERY high price.
The restaurant is very nice including a big beautiful bar. The fish entrees were very good. Caesar Salad was just ok. The service was not good. They were trying but appeared understaffed. Took a very long time to get drinks, water and bread and if not for a helpful busboy we probably would never have gotten that. Bar staff was borderline rude while trying to get a drink when we waited for our table.
Has the potential to be very good but they need to get their act together.
Made a last minute reservation for Friday night and there were few choices. Threw a dart and hit halcyon. It was very good. I believe most people that review know little to nothing about food so while I do read comments, barring a tidal wave of negatives, I go. My friends asked why Halcyon and told of the dart method. They asked if I read the negative reviews on all the sites. And I did and a preponderance were decent. We liked all the dishes we ordered. We crossed tasted so all got a chance to comment on everything. Our criticism was for the Halibut and Soft shelled Crabs. The flavors were spot on but there was too much salad on the plate. And a minor comment, the fabulous fries on the muscles get too soggy. Need another presentation.
I had called a few days earlier in a panic because I couldn't get a reservation anywhere in Montclair that wasn't 6:30pm or 9:30pm. When I called Halcyon the hostess was so helpful and called me back within a half hour with an 8:30pm reservations because she was able to "move somethings around:)". The food was exellent (scallops to die for) and the vibe was exclent- somewhere you can get dressed up to go out to eat. The parking lot can be a little tight but overall this place is great! It looks like there is a pretty good outside patio area too. Looking forward to that in the summer
once again we were very pleased. Our waiter was excellent, much patience and friendly explaining the specials not once but twice when asked. The food was great and just the atmosphere. Will be back. Also the young lady who seated us should also be praised for her friendliness and making sure we were happy where we were seated. Again a nice night out to celebrate a friends birthday. Thank you all.
We enjoyed everything about our dinner. Private lot in rear was convenient, especially in Montclair on a Friday night. We were greeted warmly and seated. Our waiter was friendly and attentive without being annoying. The food was delicious. We ordered a fritz misto to share as an appetizer. I wouldn't do that again because it was a very generous portion and filled us up a little too much before dinner, it was excellent, though, tender, spicy. Our dinners were both excellent. My wife had salmon and I had shrimp in a curry sauce. Will go back again soon.
One of the best in stiff Montclair competition.
We got off to a bad start when the hostess wanted to seat us in the bar area at a "high table", even though we had a dinner reservation and the restaurant was empty. The bread that was served once we were seated was very cold, as though it just came out of the refrigerator. Overall, the food and service were very good. I do believe the restaurant is very pricey for the neighborhood.
Our party of six relived old memories and made very special new ones at this perfectly run establishment. Requests made during our reservation were accomodated without fail. The food was fresh, delicious and uniquely presented; the raw bar is worth the visit alone! The decor was hip and relaxed and the ambiance kicked it up a notch. Our server, Samantha, was as professional as they come; a true star. We're definitely going back!
I had a gift certificate so my wife and I figured we'd give it a shot. We drove from central NJ and were initially surprised at what a pretty restaurant it was. I started with an expresso Martini which was great and my wife started with a glass of Charaz which was also quite good.
For appetisers my wife had two shrimp which were the size of baby lobsters and were delicious. I had the quesadia which was exce;;ent. For dinner I had the Mariscada which was fabulous and my wife had the scallops which were equally as good.
The sorbet desert was out of this world. The portions were very generous and I must say I was full for 2 days.
