Hai Yen Restaurant welcomes you to experience the essence of Vietnam in Chicago. From our famous Bo La Lot (marinated ground beef wrapped in a Hawaiian leaf then grilled), to the very traditional beef noodle soup (Pho), or exotic salads such as the Lotus Root Salad, to our fresh fruit smoothies with tapioca, we have everything to please any one's palate.

Vietnamese food consists of regional flavors with an infusion of French and Chinese cuisine. Our cuisine is incredibly healthy and is known as the cuisine of the dipping sauces. We use a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs, mainly for wrapping with different types of meat in a very thin, delicate rice paper with a dipping sauce on the side. At our restaurant, we allow you to join in on the fun of cooking Vietnamese food by letting you cook the food right at your own table with a fondue pot, soup pot or a grill. So stop by and create your own experience of Vietnam with us!

Mom and I went to Hai Yen for lunch on Tuesday the 3rd. We both had phở and it was delicious. The broth was rich and the vegetables were very fresh and tasty. I will definitely be back!

We had the sour shrimp soup, with tomatoes, bean sprouts, squash, pineapple, and okra, which is always terrific and the excellent grilled lemongrass beef over vermicelli rice noodles with veggies and peanuts. Our server was friendly and efficient and there was no language barrier whatever.

Went here for early lunch. Had shrimp on sugar cane sticks. They were great with the salt provided. The beef spring roll was great. Had grilled chicken with rice. Also a nice dish

For those wanting a more authentic unique Vietnamese dish, try the mien xao cua. Crab meat and silver noodles.

Service is friendly and prompt. Price are reasonable.

Authentic Vienamese food and very good. Bo la lot is a favorite as are the spring rolls. Great sauces. Food arrives sporadically so not everyone gets their order at the same time so best to order dishes to share

Meals here are always good. Fresh ingredients, flavorful and carefully presented. The percentage of local Vietnamese people dining here is a good clue to the food in this neighborhood loaded with other options! I go back whenever I can.

For years Hai Yen was our go to place for upscale Vietnamese food. Based on this visit it has definitely lost its glory. The food was uniformly bad and the service mediocre. Fried fish that was so bad that we sent it back, dried out spring rolls and tasteless beef kabobs. We will not return.

I took a visiting Colombian friend so that he could try Vietnamese food for the first time ever--especially the Best Soup in the World: can chua. It was perfect, except that for some odd reason the (big) bowl of can chua included no pineapple. Still tasted fabulous, as always.

My husband, two friends, and I had a terrific dinner at Hai-Yen. The fish, in particular, the shrimp, was extremely fresh and deliciously prepared as were the various rolls and noodle dishes we ordered. It is a BYO and the restaurant very promptly opened the 2 bottles of wine we brought and served them and even kept them chilled. All four of us felt the food and service were excellent and the prices quite reasonable. We will definitely return. This is surely the best Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago.

Hai Yen on Argule has long been a favorite! I judge other Vietnamese restaurants both in Chicago and around the country by its high standards and delicious flavors. I particularly like the Bo Lat rolls, the sweet and sour tamarind soup and the Avocado smoothie. The staff is kind, attentive and very patient,. A real treasure!

I go here at least 2x a month. Everything is fresh, and the spring rolls are incredible. Also lemongrass chicken, lotus root salad, banana leaf salad, curries. Awesome place!

We've been to Hai Yen before and like the casual atmosphere and the BYOB policy ($8 corkage). Our server was very helpful when we were deciding between two menu items: the sliced beef appetizer wrapped around a shrimp or the sliced beef (both in the same marinade) you assemble yourself with rice papers. We opted for the appetizer at her suggestion, and thought it was delicious. We were looking for a vegetable dish similar to something we had in Thailand called "Morning Glory." We thought it was similar to Chinese spinach. She suggested a vegetable that we loved and agreed, it was similar to what we wanted. We also had spring rolls which we thought were excellent, and a crispy noodle dish with seafood and vegetables, which we also liked a lot.

Parking is challenging during the Argyle St rehab. I've been eating here for many years, the food is always great. Love making lettuce wraps with fresh herbs. Lately the service has been spotty. In spite of that I'll return

Hai Yen is the BEST PHO in Chicago! The crepe appetizer with shrimp that you wrap in lettuce and greens is AMAZING! The little Vietnamese 'grape leaf'-like rolls wrapped in the Hawaiian leaf is also amazing! Go for the PHO! You will become a fan!!!

I still can't believe 5 appetizers, 2 soups, 3 entrees, and drinks cost $28 per person! Standout here is bo la lot (get a few orders of this). Squid salad came with large, fresh, beautiful, and plentiful squid. Spicy eggplant tastes like Szechuan eggplant and comes with crisp on the outside, tender on the inside tofu. Claypot dish is a much smaller entree than most, but a choice one nonetheless, especially with sea bass.

We arrive the restaurant on time and it took them 5 minutes to assign a table although the place was almost empty. After 15 minutes we called our server because he was passing by our table and ignored us. He finally came and took our order after 25 minutes we were at the table. After another 15 minutes, we call him and asked for our order and he went to the kitchen and came back saying they were busy with delivery orders. So after 40 minutes not even appetizer and our order was not in its way. Upset we left and he has the courage to say THANK YOU FOR COMING. So obviously on a very cold and rainy and windy day they were not interesting in the customers they had in the restaurant. The sad part is that we leave 2 blocks away and we go often and also order food to go. After this experience we will not dine in or order to go anymore. Al old woman was at the register, not sure if it is owner, and she did not do anything either.

I'm Vietnamese and grew up in an area in California called Little Saigon. So when I moved to Chicago, Argyle Street was a great discovery and Hai Yen is my go to place for comfort Vietnamese food like pho. I've tried Tank Noodle that lots of people seem to like... Hai Yen is so much better and more authentic in my opinion.

The service at Hai Yen was top notch--our servers were overly polite and very attentive for the duration of our visit. We ordered a lot of food and it was clear that they were bringing dishes out as soon as they were ready, rather than letting them get cold while waiting for others to complete. Really enjoyed this.

This is a must visit if you are in Little Asia. I recommend the Green Papaya Salad and the Tamarind, but there really isn't anything bad. It's all fresh and cooked to order. Enjoy!

There is such a variation in quality of service. Either the server never comes by or the server stops by every 10 seconds to ask if everyone has made their selection. For this reason alone I would not recommend Hai Yen. However, the food is delicious. Hai Yen's owners really need to find a professional to train the servers because the servers at this restaurant make the whole experience pretty dreadful.

Also, on my last 3 visits, Hai Yen never had our selected beers stocked up. There is a liquor store across the street - they could easily stock up. My friends and I could never understand why Hai Yen offers beers on the menu, but never seem to have the beers we want.

Overall, I would give Hai Yen 2 stars. Improve the service and stock up on the beers printed on the menu. It's really not that difficult.

The food was delicious, from appetizers to entrees to bubble tea for dessert. Our server was very friendly and helpful with the menu. They are not BYOB despite what we saw online, but they still let us drink our wine with a reasonable corkage fee. The interior is clean and nice, but nothing fancy. A few of the tables were very drafty on a cold Chicago winter evening, and we had to move when another table cleared up.

We will definitely go back!

As a fan of Asian food, I appreciate this establishment's understanding that some of its patrons may not favor dishes made with animal feet or organ meat. Yet, this is a good place for devotees of good Asian cuisine. My particular favorite is the ground shrimp grilled around a pice of sugar cane. The shrimp is seasoned well and the favors blend nicely with the slightly sweet hint from the sugar cane. I usually order two orders of the dish and eat just one more after I've tried all the rest of the dishes my husband and our friends order.

Prices are reasonable, and there is metered street parking. The CTA Red line el stops at Argyle--steps from Hai Yen's door. There are no accommodations for individuals using wheelchairs and walkers.

Food was great but service is a bit slow. There were no actual hostess when we walk in, we told the server that we had a reservation and he told us to sit anywhere we like. Overall, the food is good, just need to step up on the service.

We had a good Vietnamese meal at this storefront before Steep Theater. It was about two blocks south. The food was very well prepared and the menu was diverse. It was empty when we arrived but about half full when we left. We enjoyed the steamed sea bass, shrimp in lobster sauce and the appetizers. The crepes were outstanding.

My wife and I had a concert ti attend that evening. So we went right between lunch and dinner time. we were greeted pleasantly. The restaurant was pretty empty, which was to be expected at 3:30-4:00pm. We both had the pho, with spring rolls to start and bubble tea. We both agree it was some of the best food we have ever had. My wife insists it was the very best food she has ever had. I don't know that a trip to the city is possible again without a stop here.

Great spot for authentic Vietnamese food. Good for groups and families. They have the typical spring rolls, pho and bahn mi, but also tamarind soup, salt and pepper shrimp, green papaya salad, and beef skewers. Almost any dish can be made vegetarian. Takes reservations.

It is always fantastic to eat at Hai Yen. The food is very fresh and perfectly prepared. Try the "grill at your table" lemon grass beef. It is awesome!
