Had table booked at 5.30. Run out of beef and pork. Roast potatoes were tough, Yorkshire pudding dry. Chicken was good though. Our waitress was lovely.
Sunday roast was perfect but the cheese board was a little sparce for the money. Overall we fully enjoyed our experience.
Lovely Sunday lunch. Friendly staff. Good food. Qeit atmosphere. Quirky eating area
All round disappointing.
Disorganised, obviously overbooked & very overpriced drinks.
Won’t be returning
Excellent food. Great night out. Lively and staff friendly.
Great service, great choice, great food … enough said.
Our table was ready pretty much straight away, I sat down and looked at the menu... the one thing I didn't want was a huge meal. Almost everything here comes with chips or mash though so no chance of a light dinner! I went for sausage and mash but when it arrived it was as I feared, a massive portion. I tried my best but as it wasn't even that tasty I left most if it. My partner had ordered stew, we were surprised when it arrived in deconstructed form and served on a flat plate. This place has great potential it's a shame they are wasting it.
As usual, food and service really good (thank you Kamila). And those pies …! Atmosphere just spot on. Becoming our favourite place in York.
The infamous steak pie is as wonderful as ever! (About four years since I've been and had it).
Very friendly and efficient service and, of course, what a venue!
Well worth a visit. Quality and quantity excellent.
The food was brilliant, the server was happy to help with any questions and were extremely friendly.
Very little choice of meals. Slow service waited 40 minutes for food, sat at a wonky table. My fiance complained that his meal was not nice and had left it all not one apology compensation offer or a try to fix.
Booked as a 3 year anniversary as the pictures looked amazing but they were very deceiving as the restaurant didn't look at all the same.
The Sunday roast was nice although not the most generous of portions; we were particularly hungry though after 2 of our party had run the marathon and we as support crew hadn’t eaten all day.
What really let this pub down was the service, a very formidable person front of house didn’t apologise when our table was 20 minutes later than we’d booked/we had to then ask to order/we weren’t offered sauces. Bar staff were great; very friendly but restaurant staff were nonchalant rather than attentive and friendly as you’d expect.
Great food in a relaxing atmosphere
Popped into Guy Fawkes on a quiet sunny Friday in York. Really good pub and food. Been a few times now and its always pleasant.
We went specifically for the pies. They were delicious. We swapped mash for chips which were lovely and crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.
It was quite dark, we had to use the torch on our phones to read the menu but it was cosy and a nice atmosphere.
The staff were helpful and friendly.
We both had the steak pie we'd heard so much about, and it did not disappoint. The pastry was light the filling was perfect. You are informed that there will be a 20-25 minute wait for the pie but it is well worth it. We did see some other meals such as a huge buger and this also looked and smelled delicious. The whole atmosphere is great and will definitely be booking a table on our next visit to York. It has always been booked up on previous visits so booking recommended.
We love this place both for eating and staying … just need the young servers to slightly up their game and be just a little more attentive and not have one sitting about.. BUT still super !!!
Fish and chips well cooked - batter crispy, chips just right. Vegan curry equally good. Portion size just right.
Very good food and the waitress was excellent. We would definately recommend.
Disappointed with the Sunday menu, the area where our table was, was a little dark, didn’t receive the bread we ordered. On a positive note what we did have to eat was delicious and would recommend the sticky toffee pudding.
Good food, selection of drinks and the ambiance was fantastic along with the service.
Lovely Sunday dinner for my daughters birthday. Food gorgeous & service excellent.
Great food and great ambience - would definitely recommend and visit again!
Food was really good nice pub and staff where friendly
Stayed here for a short break to York. Very atmospheric, characterful building. With lots of features relating to Guy Fawkes. Stayed in the room off the courtyard. Thought it would be noisy but it was quiet. There was a bit of noise but it is an old building.
Staff are pleasant and attentive. Booked a meal in the restaurant. The food was average. A bit disappointed by the lack of choice. They had a Sunday menu which didn't have the all the meals that were advertised on the website menu.
Very enjoyable. Excellent service from friendly staff. Superb food that was very good value. Fantastic ambience and history of the inn. Thoroughly recommended.
Wine list is poor and expensive for what you get.
Food is excellent unfortunately drunk people from bar kept coming in to dinning room disturbing ambiance.
We come to eat at Guy Fawkes every time we stay in York and have rarely had any problems with the quality of the food or the service and last night was no exception. We have and will continue to recommend to others.
Cosy dining area. Very friendly staff members.
Excellent food, good value for money.
Food was delicious, well-prepared and presented. The fish was cooked well.
We felt the service was rather slow at first, took a while to get our drinks but then we learnt there was a problem with the draught beer pumps. Food service a bit slow but they were busy and it was worth waiting for.
We all enjoyed the choice of music, mainly 60s/70s, which added to the ambience.
Would recommend as ideally placed in York. Food is lovely and value for money.
We were recommended The Guy Fawkes Inn by some people we met on a York City Tour and decided to give it a go for an evening meal. The first impression we got was that the lighting was planned to give the full 17th Century experience – i.e. dark. Upon enquiry we were told that this was due to Health and Safety regulations dictating that no naked flames should be used. Perhaps the Health and Safety Inspector failed to advise them of higher wattage bulbs?
We were served by Oscar, who judging by a North American accent was not from these parts and didn’t know anything about the local beers. He didn’t seem to know anything about the food either, but thankfully the manager, Leona, seemed to be more appraised of what was on offer.
Eating must have been a bit of a gloomy affair in the 17th Century and it must have been almost impossible to see your food. Thankfully we employed some additional 21st Century technology in the form of the torch application on a mobile phone to provide culinary illumination.
The food itself was very good indeed, prepared freshly and to an excellent standard. We had the Guy Fawkes Special Pie and the Belly Pork with Black Pudding Risotto. Both of whom were very filling so no desert was required. A good price too.
So, all in all, an original experience and worth the visit. Perhaps best taken during the hours of daylight for the “Instagram ready” experience.
Great pub food without being pretentious. The menu was varied and food cooked to perfection.
Boyfriend impressed with how much gravy came with the famous Guy Fawkes steak pie.
Glad we booked as very busy, would definitely go again, highly recommended
Lovely food, service started off great then we got the dessert menu but after waiting half n hour I went to find someone to pay and got a pudding elsewhere!
Poor reheated food. Meat was tough and all veg was watery and shrivelled up. Don’t like to complain but was one of the poorest Sunday lunches I have had. Definitely would not recommend.
Good location with friendly staff. Food nothing special - rather overpriced for what you get.
Wonderful food , the beef pie being one of the best pies ever served in a restaurant !
The food was good as pub grub goes. It was busy and they still managed to serve the food in a timely manner, which is good.
