We usually go to Gus' for dinner and never would have thought that a BBQ restaurant would have breakfast. Someone suggested it, so we decided to try it and were surprised. A group of us went, and ordered a Denver Omelet w/potatoes, Pancakes w/side of Bacon, Steak & Eggs, and Banana Nut Pancakes. We all enjoyed our meals. We will be back for sure.
We have been going to this place for a very long time. Even when we moved and ended up over 30 miles away, we make time to come and eat here. The servers are great, the food is awesome and we always have fun. The parking is a bit tricky, but that's Pasadena for ya, not much they can do about it, and they do a decent job providing parking in the back, even if it is very tight, specially when people park like idiots or drive giant cars :) But the experience will far outweigh any annoyance of the outside. Definitely try the Corn Bread with Jalapeno jelly, you won't regret it. Also, try some pulled pork nachos, you'll be hooked.
Love this restaurant but first time we had terrible service :( waited forever to waiter, another waiter assisted and attended to us (even that took forever), husband ordered grits and we never received them, had to ask for plates for appetizer and refills, son's plate with sprinkled with French fries to barely cover plate (not even a handful). And, your Caesar salad should NOT have red cabbage in it, nor red cabbage with the stem still in it and since it does, your waiter should let their guest know. Our dissatisfaction was reflected in tip. Never got name of waiters, they never gave it to us.
We really enjoy dining here when we get the chance. My husband and I ate here before the Cold Play concert at the Rose Bowl. It started the evening off with a delicious meal. I am a fan of BBQ and I am a fan of Gus's. We shared the unique and flavorful deviled eggs to start things off. So good. I enjoyed the sliders. He liked the ribs. The server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. I love it when my water glass gets filled without going empty or asking. I had a great time tasting all the BBQ sauces. We always enjoy leftovers for another meal. We live about 30- to 40- minutes away, but it is worth the trip.
this was our first time at the restaurant. we came from whittier area because a friend who lives in south pasadena recommended it. the food was good but felt like a chain only because there were things like ramekins of cole slaw which felt cheap. plates came with literally two items which felt weird for the price point. we did enjoy aspects of the meal and felt like it was done with care but lacked on presentation and value. drinks were awesome, thank you!
I've been to Gus' many times in the past, so I was expecting the same great quality that kept me going back.
Started with the Onion Strings appetizer and instead of thin crispy onions it was thicker cut and the onion was under cooked inside. Our meal was off to a bad start.
For my entree I ordered the tri tip which I always order and the beef is usually beautifully smoked and tender. The beef wasn't tender and was quite tough and the smoked flavor tasted like someone used liquid smoke to get that smokey flavor. My side of seasonal green beens looked like they came out of a can and someone threw in a couple of crisp green beens make it look fresh. They were mushy and lacked flavor.
I don't know if they were having a bad day in the kitchen, but I have to say that I most likely will not be returning to eat there again. Very disappointing since I've been going for years to get great BBQ and will let other people know how the quality of the food has gone down.
We've been coming to Gus's for years and have only started noticing a slow change in the last 12 months or so. We're frankly a bit disappointed. The quality of the food is noticeably different, not improved different but maybe they've implemented some short cuts different. The service is still wonderful and attentive and we do appreciate the new table-side sauce bottles and dishes but it's no longer our go-to restaurant.
