The outdoor dining area was fantastic. I will be going back again.
We visited Guglhupf as part of the Bull City Vegan Challenge. Me and my husband have been here for brunch before and we enjoyed it. It was a great dining experience this time too!
We were immediately seated by our hostess and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the dishes offered as part of the Vegan Challenge. We placed our orders and there was barely any wait time. We were also served breads made in-house. Our only compliant was that we would have liked this bread to be a little warm. It was really fresh though.
We had the pierogies, roasted beets for appetizers and the vegan challenge dishes pfiferling (made with seitan) as entree, and the rabarber kompot (rhubarb compote) for dessert. Our most favorite dishes were the appetizers. It was very vibrant and full of flavors. The portion size for the entree looked deceptively small since we split it but it actually filled us up good. The dessert was refreshing but a little bit on the overly sweet side for the both of us.
Overall, we had a very pleasant evening and we are looking forward to going back here to try out more of there brunch items and desserts.
Absolutely delightful! Our group had a fabulous meal (very artistic cuisine) and terrific service. Our server was tremendously knowledgeable and very accommodating of our cast of characters! Greatly appreciated!
They were out of many dishes at 730
We went to Guglhuph for dinner before a play on Saturday night. Upon arrival, they had read my comment regarding needing Gluten free options, and made sure we were aware of what those were. The service was excellent. Food was fantastic. It was my friend's birthday, and we each had a scruptious dessert. I highly recommend this restaurant. Can't wait to go again!
Fabulous 3 course vegan menu. Complex, interesting flavors.
We went for the vegan challenge and it was great. The dessert was especially great
I've eaten here several times and have always been impressed with the unique menu options and incredible food.
Food & service was excellent. This place says German food, but it’s just great food. We look forward to coming back.
Our group of 4 loved our meal at Guglhupf. I asked for a table outside by the water fountains and they accommodated. Sitting outside as the sun goes down is a very special experience. Their outdoor lighting is lovely. Everyone loved their meals and felt it was authentic and approachable German cuisine. The spaetzle is outstanding.
Food was tasty & plated beautifully. Food portions were small.
What a wonderful evening we had sitting outside! We made our dinner out of sharing several small plates. Our waitress made great recommendations as to the order of serving the small plates so that we would have the right combination of flavors. We will be back!
Excellent! My husband is a native German and we are always searching for authentic cuisine. While a couple staples (Potato Salad, Dumplings) were a bit different than we are accustom to eating, they were delicious. The food wasn’t heavy and greasy. The schnitzel was crispy and very tasty! The dessert offerings were decadent and a fresh interpretation of German Staples. Beer, wine, and cocktail selections were ample to wet your whistle. The decor was warm, nostalgic yet modern and unexpected - not cliche touristy. Service was welcoming and attentive. Only complaint- wish tables were larger or plates smaller. It was cramped and juggling act to get everything to fit on the table. We will definitely be back.
We enjoy all of the entrees that we've ordered there, but what we look forward to are the spaetzle, after-dinner coffees and inventive desserts. The addition of roasted garlic to the spaetzle elevates that dish, and our forks dueled over the cloves, racing to capture each bite. Save space for dessert and coffee, folks--but always order the spaetzle.
Our group of five guys meets regularly and this time we decided on dinner @ Guglhupf. In general, I love the place but am more familiar with lunches than with dinners. The group liked the different foods selected with one exception -- the Brathaenchen - it was not what it's supposed to be (based on my experience in Munich and other places). The meat was dry and the skin wasn't crunchy and didn't cover the chicken but was on the side. Also, 3 of us had beer and were very pleased, 2 had a glass of red wine each which had to be sent back as the wine was over the hill. The same wine from a newly opened bottle was fine. So, overall we had a great evening and dinner with some low points.
Food was delicious. We both ordered the fish of the day. The Brussels hash is not to be overlooked. The only downside is our server was less than attentive. She rarely checked on us. Very unusual. We had to pour our own wine (gasp, but that's the server's job in a restaurant like this). Will be back because we love this place.
Especially noteworthy during this dining experience was the upbeat and efficient service. The food was delicious as always.
Fresh, fabulous tasteful food. Lovely night to sit out on the patio. New menu options were great to try. Waitstaff was personable and helpful. Good wine selections and deserts were just not the same old cheesecake or key lime pie! Well worth time and money to go experience.
This meal was truly wonderful. The ambiance very welcoming and warm, the service and staff were helpful, courteous, and professional.
My experience was excellent.
Unique menu and beverage selection. We especially enjoy outdoor dining at Guglhupf when weather permits.
The med rare sliced beef dish we had was VERY rare and tough. The food was barely warm. When we told the waiter about the poor quality of the meat , he smiled, and said 'awesome'!!!!! We tried to clarify it was far from awesome but he took off. Huh? Appitizer was ok but extremely small.
The chocolate dessert was very good. Probably best as a dessert place.
The ambiance was very nice, and the cocktails were well crafted. The menu had a great selection of small plates, and seemed to have great promise. This told, however, the food itself was nothing to write home about. Very basic, and lacking flare or flavor. Additionally, it was hard to overlook how older guests were given preferential treatment and a higher level of service by waitstaff as compared to younger guests. Overall, a surprisingly fair to poor experience when compared to other ratings.
I'm afraid our dinner experience here was disappointing. They seemed under staffed and the staff who were there didn't seem up to the task. Although we had a reservation, we were told we should probably go somewhere else because they were backed up and we shouldn't expect to receive any food for at lease an hour. Strange. We decided to wait and once our table became available, no one was in a hurry to get us bread, give us menus, etc. Just a really wierd night.
Guglhupf has been our go-to restaurant for many years, but our latest experience was extremely disappointing. The front of house and wait staff was disorganized, and our entrees(we did not order apps. Shout out to their "Bread guy" for helping us not starve!) took ridiculous amount of time to reach our table(nearly 50 minutes). We watched as other patrons who were seated after us received their apps and entrees, paid, and left. Also when we did receive our food, my collard greens hadn't been washed properly and still had sand in them as did the microgreen garnish. My husband's meal which should have had a crispy outer crust was soggy and had obviously been left sitting out for a while. Our intention was to speak with management, but we were already late for a planned event. We have always had very positive experiences here in the past, so this was a complete shock to our systems. While we will still visit the bakery, I think it will be quite a while before we visit the restaurant again.
Service was great and enjoyed the dinner. The dessert was awesome.
We love Guglhupf- great evening with only exception being slow service to start- our drinks took a long time to come, and we were not offered bread and had to ask for it. Other than that- we had a great meal- cauliflower starter and shiitake mushroom dumplings were unusual and very good. Fish of the day was scallops- only 3 for the portion it for the price, reasonable and delicious. Steak was good not great. Chocolate mousse cake was very good. Their house made gin and tonic and green and Black Manhattan were very well- prepared and tasty.
Bad service made for bad experience
Great food and outstanding service!
Our compliments to the new chef! Wonderful food!
My husband and I loved this place. The atmosphere was lovely, our wine delicious, the food fantastic, and the staff wonderful. All these things made our dinner such a great time, and this was possibly my favorite Valentine’s Day dinner yet. The only negative about our experience was the wait. I believe the kitchen was behind because we did not get our first course until over an hour after our reservation. We both work in food service and so did not mind much; we know how hectic it can get. Despite the long wait, we thought the entire experience was worth it and would love to return to see what the usual menu is like.
Husband and I went to Guglhupf for Valentine’s Day and it was PERFECT. Romantic atmosphere, prix fix menu for the holiday with plenty of choices for each course. The food was superb. Very elegantly plated with generous portion sizes. Nice German beer selection and wine list. Truly great for a date night or special occasion!
Service between 1st and 2nd course was unusually slow with no explanation. The meal was overpriced even for a Valentines Day special menu. We expect more from a Durham institution. We’ll be skipping holidays at this restaurant.
Valentine's Day Dinner menu very nicely done 4 course meal. Unique flavors and pleasant presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service. Restaurant will not disappoint you.
Valentines Day dinner. Great selection of food and very reasonable size portions. Nice high quality wines to match. Ate upstairs a little more intimate. Service quick but not rushed. Lovely evening.
Waiter forgot to put in one guest’s fish dinner so that person was without their meal for 3/4 of the dinner. Upstairs was cold because of blowing fans.
I love Guglhupf for brunch, and the ambiance is great for a romantic dinner too - but I was disappointed with the food and menu. My dinner was at 8pm. I was informed the fish dish (catch of the day) was already sold out. My date and I then decided to have a steak each - and we were told there's only one steak left (keep in mind, there are only 6 main items on the menu). So instead of the 2nd steak we decided to order the veggie goulash, which was surprisingly sour - we did not enjoy its taste and could not finish it.
I recommend sticking to brunch here...
Great family dining experience! We
Fabulous food, beautiful space. The cauliflower was an amazing starter, and I wish I could eat those potato dumplings everyday. Can’t wait to come back.
Food was amazing, service was amazing. I have no negative things to say and it has been added to our date night rotation.
First visit was during restaurant week and this place lived up the hype. Fabulous wait staff, amazingly creative food, and lovely atmosphere. We will return no doubt
