Guglhupf Ratings and Reviews
Guglhupf is such a well-decorated, authentic, and overall classy place! The restaurant shows its beauty through both its dishes and aesthetic. Perfect for both brunch and dinner, it tends to be more relaxed around breakfast and lunch and has a much more romantic and elegant feel in the evening. Try the potato dumplings!!
I have been in love with the spinach salad, which I have as my entree - they increase the portion size (and price) but I always bring home leftovers. Warm red potatoes and a vinegary dressing make this really special. My husband generally gets the fish, which is always outstanding.
AND to my delight (especially as I had asked for it/mentioned it on a previous review, Apple Strudel has made it to the dessert menu. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it was the perfect ending to our dinner. Guglhuph's has a fantastic bakery and it was wonderful to see a dessert from there. Do not miss this when you dine here - it was perfectly delicious!!
We went to Guglhupf for one of their special dinners -- we have been to 4 or 5 before and loved them. While the food was very good it was far from the memorable we have had on other occasions. What was disappointing was that the service was slow and spotty, and the slow delivery of the many courses. In the past service was superb -- and in this case those that were serving were very nice and pleasant but it appears the staff was more limited. It appears that the kitchen perhaps couldn't keep up with the food delivery -- as in several courses the food was served cold or cool. We love Guglhupf and will be back but this experience was disappointing.
My husband and I thought the food was phenomenal! We shared several of the small plates and they were all delicious - our favorite was the raclette. We ate outside and were offered super comfy blankets to stay warm. The Octoberfest beer selection was great, too. Will definitely be back.
When I asked my soon-to-be-9 year old granddaughter where she'd like to go for her birthday dinner she stunned me by saying "Gugelhupf"! The family had been there once before and she obviously found a lot to like. I had the best spinach salad of my life, with warm dressing and lots of little goodies in it. They were out of the venison so my older granddaughter and I had the pork schnitzel with rye breading which was delicious! I'm glad I ordered a side of the yummy braised red cabbage because otherwise the meat would have been a bit dry (I don't like it with the traditional egg on top). My daughter's fish and her husband's wurst were delicious. The guest of honor ordered pasta with butter but she was more interested in dessert which was chocolatey and outstanding. My pumpkin mousse was a bit tasteless but the texture was lovely. We sat outside which was the highlight of the evening. It's a beautiful garden-y setting with nice lights and lanterns. The service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a hurry so that was ok. I would say to allow a little extra time. All-in-all we loved Gugelhupf and I can't wait till their bakery opens in Chapel Hill!
We had a spectacular evening at Guglhupf! The food was excellent, the service perfect, and the weather outside spectacular! (They have gorgeous lighting, water features, and a vibe that is hard to match! And no parking problems at night!
My only disappointment is that twice we were told specials were out. And our reservation was at 7:30, so that seemed rather early in the evening.
But still A+
Everyone has an off night, so we are assuming this was one of them. We love Guglhupf. We will go back. However, we were not so thrilled with our dinner this evening. The oyster salad was very small, with just a few leaves of lettuce and five oysters, noticeably different from our prior experiences. The small plate was over baked and uninteresting, again, different from prior experiences. However, the chicken, as always, was outstanding. The best anywhere. Perhaps a new chef?
Service had a hiccup too. Food was all brought out at once, not appetizers first, then entree second. In all fairness, there was new help and they were very courteous, but just a tad bit disorganized. Frankly, we would have not even mentioned this had it not been for the disappointing meal.
We will be back and will write a glowing report should things change.
I loved the food here. We started with the sampler meat plate and a salad and it was delicious. We then split the wienerschnitzel. The only thing I would recommend changing is the cold potato salad with the main dish, it was not my favorite combination, but the other vegetables on the plate were were very good. I would come back.
I had the eggplant with goat cheese appetizer and my wife's appetizer was a spinach artichoke "dip." Both were accompanied by bread/toast points. My entree was the ribeye and hers was pan-seared salmon. My entree was good, but hers not do much. The salmon was quite fishy and a bit under cooked. Overall the food was average. We liked our server although he left and never said he the shift was changing. J Betski in Raleigh is significantly better.
We were told there was no room on the patio so we were seated inside. The couple behind us asked and was told there would be a table in a few minutes - wish we had asked if we could wait. The outside is just beautiful. Appetizers were great, especially the short ribs. Not sure my husband and I would order the schnitzel again, but everything else was delish!
I have been to Guglhupf for dinner now a few times and I have never been disappointed. The food is delicious, and while I always get the short rib, however seasonally prepared, there are many great-looking options on the menu to choose from, and none of my fellow diners have ever been disappointed. The bread, the salads, the small plates and entrees - all fantastic! I look forward to returning for another dinner!
