The food was outstanding as was the ambiance. I would definitely go back there. It is nice they take reservations
Everything was delicious. Thanks!
Everything was great except we had to wait 30 mins past our reservation to get seated and there’s no bar or waiting area to sit. They did give us complimentary drinks for the wait which was definitely appreciated.
The Grotto is a lovely, tiny gem of a restaurant on the back side of beacon hill. I’d recommend the lobster poached in butter over linguine which is always excellent. Unfortunately during my last visit a party of four who were pretty drunk arrived just about the same time as my dinner. Worse, they were seated at the next table. They were incredibly loud as most drunks are so dinner conversation became difficult. A small place with brick walls creates a visually pleasing environment but it also magnifies sound so the drunks at the table next to you become a problem
I have dined here on several occasions and the food and service are typically above par. On this particular occasion, tje service was excellent, however, the food was not its usual high level. Both dinners were a bit overdone and my dish was not served hot. Somewhat tepid.
I wil still give it another try.
Pleasantly surprised! Food outstanding! Ryan, our server, was wonderful! Highly recommend for a romantic night out, or with friends. Be sure to make reservations because not many tables.
Romantic setting; was not too dark or too cramped; perfect for a date. Food was very good; get the steak. Service was great too. Had a great time.
The food was very good and we like the energy and ambiance of the establishment.
A neighborhood gem, with a romantic twist. A warm cozy place nestled in Beacon Hill, where the intimate candlelit ambiance meets the passion of home-style Italian food. Great place for a date -- with that special someone. Take in a little taste of a passion for Italy, and just enjoy good food, good conversation, and the love of good people. Service is slow, but if you are not in a hurry and with your loved one, then who cares.
This was our first time at Grotto and we loved it! This little restaurant feels like a cozy but elegant treasure box of delicious Italian food, wine, and cocktails. It is quiet and the prices for the quality are excellent.
Booked a reservation to celebrate a special anniversary and it was lovely! I found Grotto's via Yelp and it lived up to its description of a romantic setting coupled with great Italian food. I recommend the Fonduta (Fontina cheese fondue, Beef tenderloin tips, Portobello mushrooms, Aged balsamic, Truffle oil), as well as the Gnocchi (Short ribs, Mushrooms, Gorgonzola) #MeatLover #HighlyRecommend #Love
We loved Grotto. It was a great place to do dinner before seeing a show at the Boston Opera House - only a ten minute walk away and those paces gave us a chance to digest a bit before sitting for a long show.
The table we had was very cute, tucked into a nook under the stairs in the corner. The candles and string lighting really set the mood for a great date. The food was spectacular. We each did the three course menu, and had fun sharing each other's selections. Each dish had great flavors and presentation. My one critique was that the Chicken Parm was a bit dry and crunchy - but maybe that is how it was supposed to be presented? Regardless, we will definitely go back!
The fra diavolo is good.
The bolognese is tasteless.
I loved everything about this place; food was amazing, pasta was fresh, bread was warm; wine was lovely and the dessert to die for. My son who is a picky eater absolutely loved it. It was a nice surprise
Grotto is our favorite Italian restaurant in Boston. The food is always to die for. It is our go-to date spot and we always bring our company there.
Great fodd good service. Only issue is the lights. Too low - couldn’t see my menu or my wife. I understand the ambience aspect but a little brighter would’ve made it much better. Also lights down low means u get tired quicker and appetite disappears.
Great food and service
Food was excellent service was perfect would come back again.
Fantastic food and great service. It was far smaller and had a more "lived in" feel than I was expecting. Incredibly loud ambient sound from the other tables and hard to hear table conversation or if any music was playing. Menu was solid and presentation was exceptional. Would return but not for an anniversary or date where conversation in lower tones was a primary desire. Very reasonably priced for this quality of food.
Everything was perfect! First time here and I will definitely be back! Looking forward to it!
I love the food. However, I cannot stand the lighting. It is absolutely insane that there is no lighting. I cannot see the menu, I did not what and how was the food.
Took my wifey out, it was dope
Lovely restaurant, great staff, excellent service. I’ve been coming here for years and i will continue to do so!
Food was great. Fondue appetizer is totally worth it. Husband loved the muscles picatta. I found the short rib ghncchi underwhelming but the risotto and steak was AMAZING. I kept stealing bites off my husband's plate! The desserts were a bit underwhelming as well. We found the restaurant to be cozy but nice. Service was great when we first got there but slowed down considerably once they became busy. It is a very small restaurant. The night we were there there were only 3 servers for the whole place. We'll be back for sure- would definitely recommend reservations and an earlier seating.
It was a date with my husband. Sorry to say we didn't enjoy the food. The bolognese tasted like a box of Altoids. If i didn't order it I never would have known what I was eating. I felt like i had swallowed a box of breath mints. And i couldn't taste anything else. Too bad the salads were terrific. I think the chef got carried away with the herbs. The veal saltimboca was a bit tough. Food prices were good but the food wouldn't bring us back to try again.
Too dark, couldn't see food or menu
The Cavatelle was very well prepared and the flavors were outstanding. The cream based sauce was light but held the dish together. The Pettini is an open faced ravioli with arugula, wild mushrooms and leeks laid across the bottom ravioli. The blend of flavors went very well with the perfectly pan seared sea scoliosis. The Budino banana bread pudding with caramel ice cream was a great way to finish the meal.
Cozy & romantic. fantastic service. Lovely start to the evening.
A magnificent dining experience. Impeccable atmosphere.
some of the best food i've had. not rushed at all - we spent 2.5 hours there.
The food was amazing!
We went here for the New Year's Eve dinner. We had a very late reservation. We got the 3 course dinner. The food was worth every penny. They also served complimentary Prosecco toast at the midnight. Service was great too. I am definitely going back.
The duck was amazing. Perfect date night for New Year’s eve
This was an outstanding restaurant, with superb food, lovely ambience, and excellent cocktails. It is small, but a comfortable and well appointed dining room. The only area that could bear improvement is the service. The service is friendly and attentive from the moment of arrival. However, at times it is a little too attentive, and, as a customer, I felt a little over-serviced. A little more time between courses would also be appreciated.
However, overall, this was an excellent restaurant, which I would happily recommend to friends.
Can be drafty in the winter!!!
Absolute neighborhood gem. Great Italian variations on ubiquitous, touristy, "red sauce" joints of the nearby North End.
Romantic, quiet, well prepared, fresh ingredients.
We went there for Christmas Eve dinner.
Great food and service. Will definitively go back when in Boston.
Adorable little restaurant with amazing food. We had wanted to do the full 3 courses but ended up way too full for dinner. Definitely got a reservation here as it is small with no bar to have a drink while you wait
Our first visit. Outstanding restaurant.will be back.
Grotto is consistently excellent! Service, ambience and food are a delight.
