Grotto's insanely fabulous tomato sauce
go here for the most authentic Boston dining experience
I liked the vibe and the service was great but the food is just ok. The bread is so terrible I had to laugh as I’d seen other negative reviews. Do a focaccia maybe. That peasant bread is a bummer with good olive oil. And frankly the chicken parm wasn’t good. So hard and dry. Rosemary?…in chicken parm…I didn’t love it. I probably won’t be back but it’s worth a go if you’re in the area.
The food and service at Grotto is amazing. My partner and I love coming here and will come back again and again. The fondue appetizer is a must! Parking is difficult to find (like most places in Boston) so use Uber or public transportation if you can.
Great little spot for Italian in Boston. Food and service was terrific. Everything we had was wonderful. Would definitely go back.
Went to this Beacon hill restaurant on a relatives recommendation. Ambiance, its a cellar and not charming. Ceiling red paint and lots of electrical wires, sketchy. Central chandelier light kept dimming when kitchen appliances running. Specialty cocktail excellent and service very attentive. Beet salad very good. Mussels okay, needed more sauce to dip bread into on bottom of dish. Table bread very dense for foccacia. Husband had chicken Parmigiano very overcooked and over spiced but spaghetti undercooked . Not al dente. He returned this dish and replaced it with the (famous) meatballs, also very heavy on Oregano and dry. My dish was the ricotta filled ravioli, also to chewy but the filling was tasty. We left disappointed and won't be back. Waiter was very attentive but didn't offer to remove any charges from the check for uneaten entrees.
We are never disappointed eating here each time we visit Boston. Intimate little place that serves amazing food with wonderful service.
Never had a less-than-amazing meal here. The service, ambiance, and food were fantastic. This is our go-to date spot. A spot that impresses.
Very warm hospitality and amazing food with an apparent attention to quality. A must try!
Terrific, intimate setting. Dinner with old friends, one visiting from out of town. Food and service were both spectacular. We shared the Fonduto, Cozze, Cavatelle and gnocchi, then the banana bread pudding and pannacotta for dessert, plus a couple of bottles of wine. Everything was delicious. Our server was professional, attentive but in no way obtrusive, and very gracious. Grotto was an excellent choice for our special evening. Thanks!
We love the grotto
We bring friends there ftom out of town
Beautiful quiet atmosphere. Great food. Great service.
Absolutely amazing. A must if you are in Boston. Charming, wonderful food, great service.
We went to Grotto in August and found the food amazing. We visited Grotto twice in November and found the food very average. The staff is amazing and the service is very quick. However, on the flip side, the place is so nice that we couldn't even hear what the person sitting across the table is saying. Hope this feedback helps the customers and the restaurant to improve the food quality.
Food wasn’t good. Service was excellent.
I love this restaurant. Fairly simple menu, but the quality is outstanding. And the ambiance is very different from the loud hustle and bustle of restaurants in the North End. Tucked away and truly charming, I recommend Grotto to visitors whenever I can. The best bolognese I have ever had.
Cozy, intimate, whole-in-the-wall, restaurant with top notch Italian cuisine to die for — great atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back!
Too small and the staff was not real helpful. There is construction in front of the restaurant and was almost impossible to find. The food was good but not good enough to overcome the location
Jennifer was a fantastic server, really enjoyed meeting her. Amazing food and ambience as always, can't wait to come back
Delicious… Favorite date night spot
Grotto was disappointing. The ambiance, which some find intimate or romantic, we found shabby and oppressive. There was a notable lack of elegance (poor lighting, no tablecloths or placemats, no place settings, just rolled-up flatware in a napkin, a single half-burned votive candle. The food was adequate. Plus points were the server, who was pleasant and reasonably attentive; certain dishes, such as the escargot; and the fact that we were promptly greeted and seated. On balance, I could spend the same amount of money in many other places that have more of a "luxe" feel to them.
Small basement location. Very friendly staff. Food was just ok
had a great time and food was delicious! definitely dining again here
Good place to get a high end Italian meal at a reasonable price. Far enough away from the Common so it is a nice and quiet place to dine.
Great service, outstanding food!
Good date night location: quiet, dim, and intimate, hidden in a basement on Beacon Hill, Grotto has good food, and a decent wine list. Service can be a bit spotty; there were some unforced errors, such as dropping off our bill unasked-for while we were in the midst of dessert. I could understand if there had been a line at the door and we were lollygagging, but such was not the case.
Wonderful food! Highly recommended! Service is great
Everything was great, except they didn't tell us NOT to come before our reservation. We showed up 15 minutes early, and had to stand outside and wait. Otherwise, it was awesome.
If you put some white table cloths out, get your staff out of Jeans and flannel shirts, and put some sound absorption panels on the ceiling, the ambiance would improve greatly! As it is now, it doesn't do the food justice; the food is simply delicious.
Everything was wonderful from beginning to end. The best escargot I have ever had and I am old!!
We had reservation on a challenging day, pre Boston Marathon day, but the service was spot on. The wife had tge scallops, tender, tasty and plenty. Tge daughter had the shrimp diavolo, big. I had the pasta bolognese, delicious with three types of meat. Highly recommended.
Loud and chaotic. Food was only passable.
Delicious meal, excellent service. The Parmesan risotto was excellent! We had beef Wellington and tenderloin - both were perfectly cooked.
Overall good experience. A bit cramped and we were in a dark corner seated awkwardly. Food and service were good.
The staff was very efficient, food was delicious!
Delicious food with amicable staff. Warm ambience. Meat and risotto cooked to perfection. The price is a bit steep, and the size/volume of the lemoncello enormous! And I thought i was getting a small shot glass of the licor after dinner. Yes, would potentially come again.
Attentive service, delicious food.
Sweet, private space with great ambience. Very large portions. Yes, we’d recommend Grotto!
Excellent dinner - server was wonderful. Her recommendations were spot on! Food was delicious and beautiful, and the wine was excellent. Will definitely come back for another meal.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants. The ambiance is perfect, the food is amazing, and the price point is very impressive for the quality of food. I would highly recommend Grotto!
I do not recall in recent memory having had a more satisfying meal than at the Grotto. If a culinary experience means to have eaten and been absolutely satisfied without feeling stuffed or still hungry then this is the place. My only regret is that I hadn’t eaten there before. I shall definitely return. At the Grotto the food is the only ambiance.
Unfortunately, what had the makings of a nice meal was spoiled by the horrible noise level in the dining room. It became so unbearable that we found relief only by leaving before finished. Management’s failure to provide a comfortable environment was somewhat unprofessional. Grotto turned out to be the only negative in our five outstanding days in Boston.
