Grotto's insanely fabulous tomato sauce
had a great time and food was delicious! definitely dining again here
Good place to get a high end Italian meal at a reasonable price. Far enough away from the Common so it is a nice and quiet place to dine.
Great service, outstanding food!
Good date night location: quiet, dim, and intimate, hidden in a basement on Beacon Hill, Grotto has good food, and a decent wine list. Service can be a bit spotty; there were some unforced errors, such as dropping off our bill unasked-for while we were in the midst of dessert. I could understand if there had been a line at the door and we were lollygagging, but such was not the case.
Wonderful food! Highly recommended! Service is great
Everything was great, except they didn't tell us NOT to come before our reservation. We showed up 15 minutes early, and had to stand outside and wait. Otherwise, it was awesome.
If you put some white table cloths out, get your staff out of Jeans and flannel shirts, and put some sound absorption panels on the ceiling, the ambiance would improve greatly! As it is now, it doesn't do the food justice; the food is simply delicious.
Everything was wonderful from beginning to end. The best escargot I have ever had and I am old!!
We had reservation on a challenging day, pre Boston Marathon day, but the service was spot on. The wife had tge scallops, tender, tasty and plenty. Tge daughter had the shrimp diavolo, big. I had the pasta bolognese, delicious with three types of meat. Highly recommended.
Loud and chaotic. Food was only passable.
Delicious meal, excellent service. The Parmesan risotto was excellent! We had beef Wellington and tenderloin - both were perfectly cooked.
Overall good experience. A bit cramped and we were in a dark corner seated awkwardly. Food and service were good.
The staff was very efficient, food was delicious!
Delicious food with amicable staff. Warm ambience. Meat and risotto cooked to perfection. The price is a bit steep, and the size/volume of the lemoncello enormous! And I thought i was getting a small shot glass of the licor after dinner. Yes, would potentially come again.
Attentive service, delicious food.
Sweet, private space with great ambience. Very large portions. Yes, we’d recommend Grotto!
Excellent dinner - server was wonderful. Her recommendations were spot on! Food was delicious and beautiful, and the wine was excellent. Will definitely come back for another meal.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants. The ambiance is perfect, the food is amazing, and the price point is very impressive for the quality of food. I would highly recommend Grotto!
I do not recall in recent memory having had a more satisfying meal than at the Grotto. If a culinary experience means to have eaten and been absolutely satisfied without feeling stuffed or still hungry then this is the place. My only regret is that I hadn’t eaten there before. I shall definitely return. At the Grotto the food is the only ambiance.
Unfortunately, what had the makings of a nice meal was spoiled by the horrible noise level in the dining room. It became so unbearable that we found relief only by leaving before finished. Management’s failure to provide a comfortable environment was somewhat unprofessional. Grotto turned out to be the only negative in our five outstanding days in Boston.
Service and meal was as expected and very good. Unfortunately the desert was less than desirable and made a poor last impression. Stay away from the tiramisu.
I would return and recommend Grotto for dining.
Have been dining at Grotto since 2000. Have never had a bad experience. Food is always excellent and the service great.
Small, intimate place with great food! It has a great old city feel to it and the service staff is very helpful with the menu. Great date night!
Poor food, small restaurant, furniture run down, ceiling looked like it was going to fall in.
Enjoyed Grotto very much. The food was very good and we had a lovely waitress. The place is cozy and welcoming. Would definitely go back.
Server was very pleasant and lovely, just brand new.
On vacation in Boston. Referred by some friends local to Boston
Cozy, intimate atmosphere. Delicious food and a nice wine and cocktail menu. Definitely recommend.
The food was outstanding at this place. I don’t normally leave reviews but I’m going out of my way right now to say the Wellington was delicious, risotto was amazing and the fondue with steak melts in your mouth. Definitely will be returning here soon
I expected a different atmosphere when I arrived. It is more casual and tight inside than I would have preferred. Anyone claustrophobic should not dine there. But the food and the service were really goo.
Small dining room. Our experience was ruined by man at next table talking business on his cell phone for 20 minutes.
This small, quaint restaurant was a nice surprise. We had dinner reservations for two on a Wednesday night. Our server was the restaurant manager and she was superb! Very friendly, fun and super helpful when it came to answering questions about the menu. The food was excellent. We ordered the Fonduta for an appetizer, I got the Fra Diavola for my entree and my husband got the Carne. The steak was cooked to perfection. Not only was the food delicious, but the drinks were great too! Do yourself a favor and have a nice, relaxing dinner here. You won't be disappointed!
It was everything we expected. Quiet. Excellent, innovative food. Good wine at good prices. Outstanding service. And of course the location and ambience can't be beat. Plus, I found parking right across the street. In other words, a perfect Boston evening.
Food was fantastic! Loved the different options and ambiance was great. Enjoyed the scallops entree, great portion.
I haven’t returned to this place for over 20 years. I love the cozy feel, such a nice intimate feeling. Love the price fixe menu. Everything was delicious! We got the escargot- still indulgent with perfect pairing of garlic butter and grilled bread, Caesar salad was fresh and crunchy- beef Wellington and carne was perfection. The Budino was divine with the caramel ice cream. We had table envy when we saw the meatballs go to the table next to us. Can’t wait to go back and try other items.

Before the pandemic the Grotto was my favorite restaurant in Boston. After nearly two years I returned last night to find that nothing had changed. The excellence of the food, the ambience, and the friendliness and competence of staff was everything that it was before the world turned upside down. It returns to the top of my list of favorite restaurants in Boston.
Grotto used to be one of my favorite spots in Boston, but it has gone completely downhill.
We had ravioli and salmon. Both were very good. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. We will be back
Excellent meal, including ceasar salad and chocolate lava cake for dessert. I had tenderloin with asparagus & risotto, other had chicken parm. Goid bottle of Tuscan cab blend. Small restaurant with lovely ambiance.
Great food and atmosphere. A bit pricey but worth it. They charge for Sparking water
A great experience. Loved the food and cozy atmosphere. Chicken parm was excellent
