Food was alright- gnocchi was a little too heavy, but the short ribs that came with it was really nice and tender. Duck confit primi was nice!
Very romantic, amazing food and wonderful service. I can’t wait to go back.
Great late night dinner. Loved the ambiance. Service was attentive and food was superb.
We have dined at Grotto countless times. No matter what we have it is always very good. I enjoyed the Maré salad with grilled calamari for my appetiser with pureed white beans and Veal Saltimbocca with prosciutto paired with spinach and creamy polenta for my entreé. Both were delightful. My wife enjoyed the Spinici greens and beets with savory toasted spiced pecans, goat cheese with a raspberry vinaigrette . She had the beef tenderloin with parmesan risotto and grilled asparagus and loved it. I noticed my dining neighbor on the next table had a pasta course of spaghetti and meatballs that looked and smelled delicious. We split half a bottle of wine and enjoyed that as well. Just a great place to dine. While festive it is not ear shattering. We hadn't been recently but they redid the dining room seating with nice banquets but the room remains as charming as ever.
Simply amazing food and the best Old Fashioned I've ever had!
The food tasted perfect, the perfect amount of flavor, in a way you would feel too overwhelmed because of how flavorful or lack of flavor.
We found The Grotto on a web search for great anniversary dinner place and it had great reviews. We were not disappointed. The service was excellent as was the food. The three course menu was a great value. The candle lit room and the brick walls made for a romantic setting. Reservations are recommended as the restaurant is small, but that also made it special.
Solid food, great atmosphere and intimate setting. A solid choice for a small group, 4 or less.
The ambience was cozy and romantic. Excellent service and food. This was our second time here and we will certainly be returning! A real treat in a nice little spot.
We were in town for the symphony and met our son and his wife for what promised to be an outstanding meal, based on the reviews I read. We were quite disappointed in the food... my meal was bland, my husband described his carne as “okay”. The tiramisu was blah.
Food was amazing . Took a friend for dinner jusy loved the evening at Grotto.
We had dinner for a family of 4, all adults. The meal was very enjoyable, service was great. Most of all the food was delicious. Would definitely return.
Excellent service, food was well prepared (and absolutely delicious), the entrees came out with perfect timing and the dessert was to die for. Highly recommended for a romantic evening. It is a bit loud in there since it is such a small space, but as long as you don't mind speaking up a little bit, this place is a gem.
Delicious food in a romantic atmosphere. I would definitely eat here again.
Grotto was excellent from the service to the food. Highly recommend the garlic soup!
Red brick sub-terranian hide-away, about 30 covers, perfect relaxed setting, excellent under-stated service. When you see a menu that offers a limited number of choices you can usually guarantee that all will be of a high quality - and absolutely true of the Grotto.
Good value for money compared to other similar Boston eateries and highly recommeded.
Amazing food and good service - we were allowed to linger and never felt pressured to rush through our meal but we also didn’t have to wait too long for courses either.
Food had a lot of flavor. The service was excellent.
The food was amazing!! The service was pleasurable and quick! And the ambience was sooo nice. It’s a very dim, small, low key space perfect for a romantic date or a drink and dinner with a friend! I’m still dreaming about the food since I left!
Perfect restaurant for an anniversary or other special occasion. The small, dimly lit restaurant with exposed brick, wine bottles and candles adorning the walls and tables makes for a very romantic atmosphere. The service was impeccable and the food outstanding. Everything was prompt without feeling the least bit rushed. The waiters were very knowledgeable about the menu. The fondue and risotto were among our favorite dishes. I would love to return!
12 Tables, incredible ambiance, candlelight only. Every course was suburb and beautifully presented. Waitstaff was knowledgeable and helpful. A wonderful and memorable dining experience.
Great restaurant for a romantic dinner. Food and service were wonderful.
Grotto is consistently my favorite restaurant in Boston for a date night. The food is always excellent (I am obsessed with the zuppa made with fresh garlic and truffle oil and the short rib gnocchi), the atmosphere is very romantic, the wine list is epic, and the espresso martini beats out anywhere else in Boston/greater Boston. The service is always friendly, quick, and attentive!
Fantastic. Duck Confit was outrageously good. Will be back to try the fondu...
Overall a very good experience but lighting was too dark
I had emailed Grotto after being completely appalled by our dining experience but received no response. We had reservations which I called in advance to push back. I was advised that they were quite booked for the night but that we were still welcome. Upon arrival however we were rushed to make all three course choices in tandem with a wine selection without seeing the menu. The restaurant was so dark we couldn’t read the menu as we were placed in the corner. After being rushed through our first two courses we were told that our desserts were being bagged up and that we would have to find a place to eat them elsewhere. The bill was rushed over and the server stood over us waiting for it to be signed. My girlfriend was told that she had time to finish her meal but the table was needed. Immediate after however we were told to rush and thus we felt incredibly sick. Our wine selections (which we made blindly) came in at $16 per glass, much higher than expected. We left a generous tip, however the server knew that our experience was completely unacceptable. In a city with tons of incredible options for Italian we admittedly expect and deserve much better. Given the lack of hospitality, value and response from the establishment we will not be back. If you are looking for something more casual I’d suggest searching on Hanover or Salem street.
My experience at Grotto was absolutely horrible during dinner. In the past, I have had lunch there several times and the service was also poor, but border-line acceptable.
When arriving for dinner at the 5pm reservation time, we were told that we are not ready yet and you have to wait outside. I was immediately repulsed. We sat down and were given the three course dinner menus. We were only interested in the single dinner options and asked for another menu. We were told that the new should be more affordable for us and there is no sharing. All we could do was laugh at the comment as cost was never an issue. Finally, after spending one hour eating and talking, we were asked to leave because they wanted the two seats for a bigger dinner party. They went as far as handing us our coats! The ironic thing is they didn't ask anyone else in our area to leave the restaurant.
Unfortunately, this rude and despicable behavior was a great example of covert racism. Again, I will never return to Grotto and inform anyone I can about my horrible experience.
Glad to find a nice Italian restaurant to go! Love their mussel app sooooo much!
One of the best restaurants I’ve been! Def best Italian in Boston.
Fantastic food in a an ambiance filled atmosphere. Love Grotto!
Our server was so friendly! Food was amazing! Drinks were fabulous!
Thanks Tanya! love hearing this feedback, We hope to see you soon!
Went for my boyfriends birthday and we had a really great time! The food was really good, many options to pick from and it was absolutely worth it. Great customer service and a really good place to be.
So happy we were able to make your boyfriends night a great one to remember! Whos Bday is next?? Hope its soon!
Really, top-notch, from the service staff to the food. Cool, funky spot - they definitely maximize their space.
We try! Come back soon! New specials and cocktails in a couple weeks
Great spot - hidden gem status earned for sure. If you're not a regular however, the greeting & seating process is not at all clear. I totally understand being busy as a hip and trendy place to be, but it's odd to not actually know what's happening for 15 - 20 minutes.
Perfect place for a romantic date. So intimate and loved all the candles. Will definitely be back!!
This was my first time at Grotto and it will not be my last! The food was delicious!!!
(Crab Ravioli, Bolognese, Fra Diavlo, chocolate lava cake!) The service was excellent... Very attentive. The ambience was perfect... A small intimate setting with lots of voitive candles. I highly recommend!!!!
The food was absolutely delicious! I would highly recommend a reservation as this place is tightly packed and busy on popular nights.
We arrived with our daughter having made a reservation for only 2, due to a last minute babysitting issue. The restaurant is very small and was packed, but they shuffled their seating schedule to make room. The ambiance is like a wine cellar, and though crowded and with noise, still managed to seem intimate. Service was a little slow, but the waitstaff was courteous and attentive. The food was excellent and the portions exactly right. Very pleased and would definitely recommend.
The lunch special for dine-in Boston is $25. However, the bill adds to more than $25 before tax. Just be aware.
Food here was fantastic!! I strongly recommend the crispy confit duck, veal, beef tenderloin and lobster pasta! The banana pudding in desserts was amazing too!
