Intimate setting and wonderful food. Also the noise level
Is low which I really appreciate. Would eat here again.
Great food, elegantly presented. Highly recommended!
Super disorganized. We were seated 15 min after our reservation without any compensation (the waiter did apologize). Food was good though. Very loud.
Went during restaurant week so they were very busy. Very small venue with nowhere to wait, so as a line built up people began to get frustrated and had to wait outside. Ambiance is very dark, some guests had to use cell phone flashlights to read the menu. We got the prefixed menu for restaurant week and were stuffed by the end. The quality of food was fantastic. They did however forget to bring our dessert before handing us the bill, but we’re extremely nice when we reminded them about dessert. The busier they got the longer the wait times were between courses and we waited a long time for our check. We would definitely go back another time when it is less busy (and again for restaurant week) when I’m sure things would be more calm!
If you're looking for a great Italian restaurant with a bit of quaint setting, then this is your place. This is a somewhat smaller place as compared to other larger restaurants. But don't let the size fool you. The food, service and ambiance are all what one could ask for. If you're looking for a warm, inviting, a little romantic & cozy place for a nice meal, then this is the place.
Amazing all around. Really enjoyed our time at Grotto.
Cozy. They were very nice about me running late after work and insane traffic. We had a wonderful time. The food was amazing. Will come back for sure but on a Sunday when there's no traffic lol
Went to Grotto with a friend a year ago and had a great meal, but when I returned this week for a 3 course meal, I was less impressed. My first course was delicious, but the second course was literally inedible. The pasta was so hard that even with a fork it was difficult to skewer and very tough to chew. I managed to find 2-3 pieces that were soft enough to try, but none were even close to being even al dente. Unfortunately, the chicken was no better, as it was undercooked as well and had an almost rubbery quality to it... I picked out the tiny pieces of asparagus and left the rest. Desert was good but nothing amazing. My two friends faired better than me, but also felt that the restaurant had dropped the ball a bit. Perhaps it was an off day.
It had been awhile since I have dined at Grotto Restaurant. This visit didn’t disappoint, the meal was fabulous and we had a wonderful experience once again.
The best Shrimp Scampi I have ever had. The buffalo mozzarella app is amazing!!
One of the best meals we ever had. We were travelling and could not take put leftovers. I was very sad. Great wine selection!
The gnocci is incredible! Short ribs are so tender. Great service, perfect for date night!
I enjoyed my dinner and the selections, but the food was nothing special. While the atmosphere is intimate and cozy and conducive to conversation, the service was too attentive and felt rushed. I prefer Italian restaurants in the north end.
Grotto has the most amazing staff and an exact embodiment of New England style, classic Italian dishes. After my second time back, I made sure to take notice of the vintage decor hidden within the walls of the old utility room which Grotto is comprised of. Halfway underground off of Bowdoin street and a 30 second walk from the NE corner of the Massachusetts State Library garden, Grotto is probably my new #1 favorite restaurant in the city.
Absolutely love the food here! I take family here, dates, celebrate special occasions here, its the perfect cozy place to go and enjoy a nice meal.
Lovely food,service and ambience
Love it there. Cozy and comfortable with great food
Experience and food were excellent. Mussels and Gnudi were both great. Thank you!
Birthday celebration. From out of town
Best risotto I’ve ever had. Excellent food and great servers.
Great italian with a quiet, dark but charming ambiance.
The food was terrific, although I felt the veal saltimbocca was a bit overcooked. Waitstaff is top notch.
Super cute and cozy restaurant, excellent food! Perfect for a date night.
My date’s pasta was a little salty and we had to wait longer than expected for our wine. Pretty disappointing experience considering how good the meals have been here in the past.
Romantic feeling, great anniversary dinner
It was excellent evening, thoroughly enjoyable and great value
Food was excellent
Service was very quick and efficient, the food was very good progress exemptions from the server; we thoroughly enjoy the time
Grotto is incredible. Simply put. The atmosphere, the service, and of course, the food -- is phenomenal. Any time I am in Boston, this is a must-stop restaurant. I had the Carozza, bolognese, and panna cotta and every single bite of these dishes were exquisite. For the Carozza, the buffalo mozzarella was perfectly toasted, offering an experience of both crispiness and a soft, gooey melted deliciousness. This dish rested on a bed of baby spinach and black olives and provided a nice salty undertone that finished the dish well. The bolognese was a taste like no other. Beef, pork, and lamb combined was a first for me, but now... is there any other way to eat bolognese? Grotto has a sauce reputation and a well-deserved one! Not runny or too thick, evenly seasoned, and just enough on the pasta left a nice acidic aftertaste with each bite. The panna cotta deserves its own review, so that should say a lot about the dish in and of itself. Perfectly sweet, just enough, and elegant -- everything you want to wrap up a great experience. On top of this, the service was world-class, professional, and high-end yet very welcoming and warm. Our waiter noticed I was 7-months pregnant and that my sister ordered a cocktail. For me to feel like I wasn't missing out, he whipped up some delicious non-alcoholic concoction that was fizzy and refreshing -- especially during one of the hottest weekends in the history of Boston, and free of charge.
Would definitely recommend making a reservation and enjoying an authentic Italian experience! I will be back, especially, to try their incredible selection of wines.
awful service i will never come again. I went for an anniversary and they put us under an air conditioner that was leaking water on us. Our waiter was not helpful nor nice to us.
It was easy enough to find and one we were there we had great service. Our waiter recommended plenty of great pairings for wine and food and it was a unique experience.
We chose this restaurant for our last meal of a long weekend in Boston.
At dinner lighting is too dim! Diners had to use their phones to light the menu when order. You can not enjoy the lovely presentation of the food. You eat with your eyes first, so bad lighting really takes away from the overall experience.
The food and wine were very tasty. Special ingredient requests were no problem and handled with ease.
The restaurant is tiny, but when the diners arrive at the same time, service can be a problem.
Delicious food in a cute little restaurant on the basement level (hence the "Grotto"). The cavatelle appetizer and the risotto were both amazing - perfectly balanced rich flavor. The two of us each ordered the prix fixe and it was definitely too much food - you're probably better off sharing a couple appetizers, a main, and a dessert.
Amazing spot with great food! Awesome for a date =)
My favorite spot in the city, hands down! Incredible food that’s well worth the price quality-wise, attentive staff, and the best romantic atmosphere. My go-to special occasion spot.
Very enjoyable experience. Good food. Reasonable prices and romantic (dim light/no tv or other distractions). Tables are close together though. Small space. We will be back.
I was early for my reservation and they took my friend and myself right in . The food was above average (veal and scampi dishes). The server was knowledgeable and helped with the wine selection and I never felt hurried or rushed ,while my guest and I lingered over our entrees and after dinner drinks...
Food is amazing but you're sitting in a basement restaurant with all the smells that accompany a basement.
Food is always phenomenal and it's never difficult to get same day reservations. Service was a little lacking but the food more than made up for it. The cavatelle and gnocchi was incredible and is always my go-tos.
2nd visit. Love this place.
