French bistro meets Latin Social Club at Grondin: French-Latin Kitchen located in Honolulu’s Chinatown Historic District. Serving rustic French and Latin American cuisine inspired by the owners' upbringings. All ingredients are carefully sourced and local when possible. Favorites amongst the regulars and Press include: the house Charcuterie, Kauai Prawn Ceviche, Bone Marrow, Chicken Mole, Cassoulet, Duck Breast, Steak Frites, homemade ice-cream, just to name a few.                                                             Be transported back to NYC/Williamsburg Brooklyn. That’s were the life of Grondin began. The owners created Grondin but with a French Peruvian theme. Have their escargot, bone marrow, ceviche, cassoulet and steak. You just can’t go wrong. Superb waitstaff with a great vibe. And the price can’t be beat.

                                                            Our first time here, and no doubt our last. We arrived 20 minutes before the crowd started showing up. Regardless we still sat there for almost an hour to get our food. The apology given was because they were so busy. That's not my biggest disappointment though. I ordered the rack of lamb which was the special of the night. It was described as 4 large ribs. 3 small lamb chops would have been more accurate. Most entrees on the menu were around $20. When the special was suggested no price was given. I suppose I should have asked because the cost was $45. I never would have ordered such an overprice small dish had I know.

                                                            Overall, 3 out of 4 in our party really enjoyed dining here. One member thought their sandwich was too salty. We enjoyed the duck, cassoulet, steak frites, and all iur desserts! Service was very good and friendly. I took one point off because it was very noisy for dinner, but maybe that's because there was a huge birthday party celebrating over the loud music, too. We'll probably try again for lunch.

                                                            When my wife and I left NYC and it’s amazing food scene 6 years ago we were prepared for not being able to find our regular NYC/Williamsburg Restaurants. We were 100% correct. Then came Grondin and it’s history of having been nurtured by the owners who created Fatty Cue and Fatty Crab in NY. Whenever we want to get our NYC creative cuisine we head to Grondin with its Bone Marrow, Escargot, Ceviche , cassoulet and whatever new things come to the Chef/owner David Segarra. The prices are perfect for the price conscious foodie and their Open Air garden is very romantic. Some of the best wait service in all of Hawaii.

                                                            We love the French-Latin influences at Grondin. And the ambience/decor is the best bistro style experience I have had on Oahu. This hidden gem on the other side of hotel street is a great place to escape the crowds of the mediocre Chinatown restaurants nearby. And the outdoor space is great for parties.

                                                            One of the most underrated restaurants in Honolulu. This is place is REAL. A husband and wife team support by a pro staff. Known for their fabulous cassoulet and empanadas you should not be afraid to try the burger or the duck - both fabu. Solid cocktails. Music during brunch at times.

                                                            My limited enthusiasm for Grondin is based on cooking quality. My wife and I thought the ambience and service were very good. We ordered very little variety, one french onion soup and two steak frites, medium rare. The soup was good, fairly standard, and the frites were excellent, probably saving the meal. The steaks (highest priced item on the menu), however, were overcooked mostly to dryness except for a small area of pink in the thickest part. I am an experienced cook who also attended culinary school and I could not identify these steaks as NY strips, as advertised. So we saved the major portion of overcooked for our grandkids, since our dogs are back home in Seattle. Finally, the wine list was woefully limited, although we did like the tempranillo.

                                                            We are visiting and walked through the historical area of Honolulu . We noticed several small restaurants that looked appealing so checked reviews. We settled on Grondins and made a reservation. Staff were lovely, food was varied and excellent and it felt like eating in a friendly household or neighbourhood bistro. We are always appreciative when we can find something other than a chain or big name restaurant that is so nice. We had cassoulet and duck and the people sitting next to us had an amazing marrow bone and mussels which they said they really enjoyed.

                                                            Every time we dine at Grondin it’s a special occasion. We’ve stopped counting how many times we’ve been there. We always start with some unique and special cocktail created by their mixologists. Then we move to one of their tablecloth tables. Their amuse bouche is always different. A perfectly squared cube of the best stock you’ve ever had formed into an aspic. Usually with a nice kick. We usually but not every time have the escargot if it’s available. The chefs have a way of deconstructing this dish from its original French style. The escargot comes in a small ramekin with possibly the greatest sauce you’ve ever had with escargot. Plate your dish with one escargot on a great thin slice of bread perfectly toasted and buttered then add the sauce. Truly south of France but with a Spanish influence. We Always have their ceviche which has the perfect acidity you could want coupled with the freshest fish. Now I’m not saying you can’t get the following. Maybe it’s just made for us BUT when you make your reservation on Open Table ask for their Steak Tartare. Honestly it’s the best even if you’ve been to Paris. I won’t tell you how it’s prepared at the table but if the Chef is willing to make it, ORDER IT.

                                                            Grondin is a wonderful restaurant with a varied and enticing menu. Not items you see on other menus often and very well priced. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the service is excellent....not overbearing but attentive. Very enjoyable lunch!

                                                            So the question came up after my friend and I had lunch here. Why don't we come here more often? After all we do lunch every week around town. Everything was great--and I mean everything. The drinks (we are very particular about our cosmos) were perfect, the salad and soup (we each had one), the entrees were tasty and not commonplace and the dessert was very nice (as was the coffee). We went for the prix fixe menu for restaurant week but there was some substitution allowed. Totally recommend this place and we will be back sooner not later.

                                                            While the food was good and the service was decent, we are nonetheless forced to give our experience low reviews because we had made reservations based on a Restaurant Week menu. The Restaurant Week Hawaii site offered making reservations via Open Table, which indicated available times. Imagine our surprise when we were told that the Restaurant Week menu was NOT available during our 1:30 p.m. meal. (That was not indicated on the Restaurant Week Hawaii site.) We were hugely disappointed but ordered an entree based on what was on the menu. Our meal's one saving grace, or so we thought, was that a dessert item on the menu was also included in the Restaurant Week meal. That dessert was a big part of why we selected Grondin for Restaurant Week. Then we were told it was "unavailable" -- which we weren't convinced was true, because Restaurant Week was in full swing, and that dessert was listed on the Restaurant Week menu. En total, it was a disappointing visit and an unfortunate choice.

                                                            Amazing food. Location is okay, sadly a lot of junkies in Chinatown. And sometimes server seemed to be rushing us to order drink or finish our business. My wife and I don't drink but we enjoy food. This was great! It seems that because we weren't drinking we weren't the ideal customers the server wanted there.

                                                            Early dinner on a Friday. Responsive, informative and knowledge service. The empenades were a mixed meat and accompanied by tasty sauce. The fish of the day was presented creatively and exceeded expectations as did the duck dish. Recommend you visit and enjoy !

                                                            Salty Night. I enjoy the food here and have been many times. For some reason, everything we got on this particular night, seemed over the top salty. Still good preps and great menu selections. Music was great, but then later got very loud and techno which did not seem like dinner music and my guest and I had to raise our voices to hear one another. Excellent staff, genuinely attending to their customers.

                                                            Damon tended bar and was waiter when we were there for lunch at 1130am. He was empathetic, sympathies and cheerful.very nice guy and we had a good lunch. Wasn't too busy either, very few folks there at that time. grondins tends to be noisy if full.

                                                            We had a great pre-theatre dinner and cocktails at Grondin. The server was very attentive and friendly without being intrusive or rushing us out. I recommend a reservation of no less that 1.5 hours prior to any show to make sure you have enough time to enjoy your meal and then walk to the theatre.

                                                            Back again. Can't seem to stay away. Therefore never boring as is evident of how many times my wife and I visit Grondin. Last night was typically amazing. We started off with our favorite artisanal bar drink. A very spicy smoking Maguey. There is always their signature amuse bouche which is a spoon with a square of aspic infused with some awesome stock sauce. The stock changes every night. We followed this with Prawn Ceviche with Kauai prawns, house ketchup, red onions, Serrano chili, tomato, citrus, chifles. What makes this Ceviche so special is the balance of acidity and fruit. We hadn't had the Picadillo in years and we were not disappointed. Minced spiced Kulana grass fed beef, lime cream, chili salt. Rivals my wife's chili and that's a major compliment. Then came my favorite dish of all. Escargot in a cup of pure French Demi-glacé, butter, garlic and crostini. Spent a month in France a month ago and never had escargot like this. We finished the dinner with a brand new dish. A superb Crusted fried chicken. Moist, medium spicy and altogether delicious. Had a perfectly ready Rioja from Spain. Add a great Wait service and what more can you want. The bill is $$!!!!!

                                                            We enjoyed eating a bunch of petit plats, and didn't eat an entree. The Ceviche was our favorite, though the fried stuffed banana and bone marrow were a close second. The Cubano was awesome, and the creme brulee was the BEST. Food was rich so good for special occasions, not everyday dining =)

                                                            Having lived 95% of my live in NYC and teaching wine programs there I consider myself lucky to be able to have known many great artisanal restaurants. Hawaii is just getting its share of these types of restaurants but Grondin leads the pack. It has the ambiance of a laid back bistro with a small convivial bar serving amazing creations and a staff that should be studied for future restaurants. But what is totally over the top is it's food. Many fine restaurants have a few standout dishes and the rest are quite good. Grondin has a list of amazing dishes starting with for starters, their escargot, bone marrow, frisée salad with the best large lardons to die for and a totally perfect cerviche. If you are lucky enough as we were last night since we called ahead and asked for the best steak tartare in the world and it's served and created right in front of you. Good luck. The mains are for us are cassoulet that reminds you of the south west France but with finesse and on the lighter style for Hawaiian weather and I do believe the best steak frites around. What makes it the BEST is the intense, dark infused stock. Grondin serves Gruet which is a sparkling wine from New Mexico and goes perfectly with their French Latin food. The rest of the wines are perfectly matched for acidity, fruit and tannins.

                                                            Had Sunday brunch here for my moms birthday. We were the only large group in the place, and they had a full house. It was also the last Sunday of the month in which they have live Jazz music, making the place a bit smaller and more energetic. Which was perfect for a birthday. They were still able to provide great service, delicious food and everyone else seem like they were having a great time. Really appreciate how they accommodated us.

                                                            Made a reservation within 15 minutes of our 9:00pm seating, then were told that the kitchen was closed, even after acknowledging our Open Table reservation. Don't advertise a 9pm seating if you don't intend to honor it! Close it at 8:30 and save us all the hassle - at least the Ethiopian restaurant around the corner was gracious enough to welcome our business.
