We are the first restaurant to partner in Washington, D.C. with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program, ensuring safe and environmentally friendly seafood as part of our cuisine.
Our setting is unmatched and the best casual, neighborhood dining in the West End. The bar is ornately decorated with massive mirrors, large columns and a multitude of glowing candles. These, along with the open kitchen where flames leap from the grill, create a warmth and intimacy in a casual atmosphere.
A $3 per person fee for desserts brought from outside will be applied to the check
Good value for the price. We will be back at our next visit to DC.
Cozy restaurant with a delicious menu. Great drinks. We enjoyed crab cakes, Arctic char, and soft shell crab. All were wonderful. It’s kind of noisy, but you still could Cary on a conversation. We would not hesitate to return.
Good food and not rushed
Thank you for the review, and I hope we see you again soon.
Waiters were not that attentive and could never find him to ask a question. I had the sangria and it was mediocre and watered down. Food was mediocre. The mixed grill seafood was bland.
I am sorry to hear about your experience. We pride ourselves on great service and food, and we would like to show you that on us.
We visited on Fathers Day and they weren’t real busy but still had delays getting our two adult entrees out in a timely manner. Was then difficult to enjoy with our two kids bored watching us eat.
Went with a large group (18). Service was very attentive. Room is quite loud. My crab cakes were delicious - as were the mashed potatoes; too much arugula on the grilled asparagus salad. Many people got the mixed grill and enjoyed it. As I am allergic to scallops, the waiter noted that I should probably stay away from other fried and grilled foods as they were cooked on the same surface as the scallops - so thanks go to him for the warning.
Thank you choosing us for your special occasion. I am glad we were able to provide you a delicious meal that met your expectations. I hope you choose us again for you next celebration.
We dined on Thursday, June 13 with friends who were visiting from out of town.
We chose this spot due to proximity to their hotel. It turned out to be a great
choice for several reasons: parking was convenient and reasonably priced; reservations
were easy to make online; menu was interesting and descriptive; service was attentive
Friendly and welcoming. The food was great!
We will return!
Thank you for the review, and I hope we will see you again soon.
Food was not good. Restaurant was nice, in nice location. Server was courteous and friendly. Food looked good but had a very offputting chemical-like taste. When brought to the servers attention, we got an excuse that it’s “fresh”. Fresh seafood doesn’t taste like soap. Crab cakes were great!
I am sorry to hear that the food did not meet your expectations. We do pride ourselves in providing our guests fresh and sustainable seafood. I hope you come back, on us, so that we can show you the top quality we offer.
Our waiter was wonderful. He was courteous, answered all our our questions, and prepared the lobster to be eaten with no hassle. Great place. Will definitely recommend. The male greeter was rude. Staff was wonderful.
Thank you for choosing Grillfish, and I am glad the waiter was able to make your experience enjoyable.
Loved this place. Ate here twice. They need to use the exhaust fan more since it got a bit smoky in there. Fish was great. Lobster was delish
Thank you for the review. Thank you for letting us know about the kitchen as we are always trying to improve ourselves.
We have been dining at Grillfish in NH Avenue, NW for 12+ years - for the very good reason that the food is locally sourced, fresh, well prepared and well cooked. Clearly, after our most recent experience, the quality of the food - indeed, the whole dining experience - has nosedived. We asked for a quiet table but getting one seemed to be more problematic than it should have been, largely because the overall noise level was high. Once seated, we received bread that was of the usual high quality but had been sitting around for some time i.e. aka, toast. But the worst part was our entrees. My wife's mahi mahi was tasteless and the asparagus that came with it was woody and burnt; and my sea bass had obviously been pre-cooked and reheated - and looking towards the kitchen there was no evidence of an identifiable chef. I cook sea bass at home and know that it does arrive on the plate looking like the fish I found on my plate. Then, to cap it all, when we complained and a manager came over he started arguing the toss/ a tad too aggressive/basically in denial. After a bit of to and fro he finally comped our entrees - but, as regular customers, we were so disappointed both with the decline in food quality and management attitude.
So, after 12 good years, this restaurant is off our list.
I am sorry to hear about your experience. We work hard to provide all of our guests great service and fresh sustainable seafood. Please let us know the next time you are in town, the meal will be on us so that we can provide you the meal and service that are expected from Grillfish.
Outstanding service! Prompt, food was excellent and very nice atmosphere.
Thank you for the review, and I hope we see you again soon.
We went to Grillfish DC to celebrate our anniversary. Beautiful interior, wonderful waiter who really took care of us, and the food was excellent! They brought our dessert out with two lit sparklers which was a nice surprise. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you are looking for great seafood.
Thank you for choosing Grillfish to celebrate your anniversary. I am so glad to hear everything was to your liking. I congratulate you, and hope you celebrate many more special occasions with us.
Excellent fish choices. This is not a fancy restaurant, but a great neighborhood, relaxed pick. We were staying at the Washington Hilton, just about a mile away. Nice evening stroll or quick cab ride. My sesame crusted tuna was delicious, and my companions were all happy with their dinners.
next time we are in D.C., we will go there again.
Thank you for choosing us while visiting DC, and I hope we see you again the next time you are in town.
Delicious, sustainable fish cooked to perfection—what more could you ask for? Grillfish follows the Monterey Bay Aquairum’s recommendations for sustainable seafood, so you can relax and feel good about the mahi mahi skewer, seafood pasta in spicy marinara, or crab cakes you order. The ginger calamari was truly excellent—it’s hard to serve fried calamari in a sauce and not have it come out rubbery or soggy, but Grillfish manages it admirably.
The atmosphere is moody but not stale, with high ceilings and dim lighting, accented by blackboards with the day’s catch written on them, artfully-melted candles and dark wooden walls. It feels like a slightly more upscale version of your typical New England dockside fish restaurant. The prices are pretty good for what you get—the portions were quite generous.
My one complaint is that they ran out of soft shell crab on the day I visited... but honestly, it wasn’t a big deal. We arrived late in the day, and I’d always rather the seafood was fresh, even if that means it’s in limited supply. I will definitely be back!
Thank you for the review, and I am sorry to hear that we the soft shell crabs were unavailable for your visit. We do pride ourselves on fresh and sustainable seafood. Please call us ahead of time, so we can make sure to have soft shell crabs available for you.
I enjoyed Grillfish at 22nd and M very much and will soon go to the one in Bethesda. I sat outside on a beautiful night and had a delicious dinner of bronzino, asparagus and greens with key lime pie for dessert. However, I hate noise and would not have enjoyed it indoors because by 7 PM it was much too noisy for me.
Great weekend brunch menu. Can’t beat $1 oysters. Service was great. Wonderful laid back dining experience.
Thank you for the review, and don't forget $1 oysters are available for Brunch, Lunch, and Happy Hour.
Yes, but for the price what paid definitely I will recommend it somewhere else was not that impressed with the food ,
The ginger calamari was an appetizer to die for. We also enjoyed the lobster linguini which was silky smooth.
I am glad to hear about the wonderful meal. Thank you for the review, and I hope we see you again soon.
My party of 14 went for lunch after graduation. There were maybe three other parties present. Our server was patient and attentive, but it seems the kitchen was a slightly overwhelmed. Overall, the food was very tasty. No one in my party had any complaints.
Thank you for celebrating with us, and congratulations. Thank you for the review, and I hope you celebrate with us again.
It was very warm inside and they had a portable AC unit that did not make it.
Thank you for the quality food and fine dining service!!!
Thank you for the review, and I hope will see you again soon.
Nice place with good location and perfect kitchen, although a bit noisy....
Thank you for the review. We will look into the noise level and what we can do to improve the dining experience.
This place served fresh fish beautifully in a casual setting. Great food, great service. Head and shoulders above other, more expensive places we went this week.
Thank you for the review, and I hope you will choose us again soon.
Loved the $1 oysters!
Food was amazing and far exceeded expectations! It looked beautiful and tasted even better. The ambiance was great and restaurant was nice and close to night life. It was a great choice!
Thank you for the review, and I am glad that you enjoyed your dining experience with us.
Terrific food. Fresh. Well-seasoned. Not too pricey for a seafood place. Friendly service. A great place overall. Will certainly return next time I'm in DC.
Thank you for the review, and the kinds words about your meal. I hope you visit DC again soon.
Food was delicious!
The seafood was very good quality. The company was not so pleasant at the bar. The service was mostly good although my second dish took a long time.
Thank you very much for coming in and spending time with us while you were in DC. Thank you for the review and we hope to see you the next time you are in DC.
Great food and Amazing service. Very accomomodating to our party. Thank you!
Thank you for the review, and I am glad your party had a great time! Thank you for spending your special day with us.
Service and food were very good. Ambience and decor were nothing special but the entres and service were.
Thank you for the review, and I am glad that the service and food met your expectations.
Delicious seafood and great service. Everything we had was great. We started with calamari and buffalo shrimp- perfect! For the main course, my hubs had the fried soft shell crab tower and I had the Seafood Sicilian. They have nice drink options as well. We will definitely return!
Thank you for the kind words, and I am glad that you enjoyed the food so much. I hope we will see again soon.
Went to Grillfish for brunch on Mother’s Day. The food was so good, but for some reason, our food took very long to come out. The waiter was apologetic, and offered us salads on the house. All in all, I’ll return.
I am sorry to hear about the slow service, but glad that the food was good. Thank you for brining it to our attention and we will work on more attentive service.
came for mother's day. mixed fish grill-delicious. potatoes were tolerable but forgettable; spinach was good but needed seasoning (there was pink salt on the table though.) Mom's catfish sandwich w/eggs-excellent. Punch cocktail and orange (?)ginger margarita were tasty.
Get the strawberry rhubarb pie. Excellent! Service was great as well.
Thank you for the review, and the kind words about the food. I am glad you had a great experience with us, and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Parking was awful. The weather was terrible and we were unable to enter garage because of a mal-functioning arm and an unknowledgeable attendant. Not accessible for handicap. Maitre de did not show concern about customer with walking cane needing assistance entering the restaurant having to navigate wet steps, and he did not assist with helping her to be seated by pulling out her chair at the table.
I am sorry to hear about your issues with the weather and parking. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, in regards to the guest with the cane. We will make sure we are more diligent in taking care of guests with special needs.
Quality of food was below our level expectation. The shore platter was HORRIBLE...overdone shrimp and fish. Only had a fried taste. Heavy breading. Very disappointing. Advertised vegan options, but once we arrived and surveyed the menu, the only suggestion we were provided for a vegan meal was to order several side dishes. That’s poor vegan options.
Server was excellent! He did his very best to try to accommodate our family. Definitely do not recommend this establishment. Not sure about all the positive reviews. We were shocked are expectations were poorly met.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hope you come back and give it another chance. We have worked on the platter to make it bigger and better. As for the vegan options, we are working to expand our entrée options.
Delicious food and very nice and attentive servers.
Thank you for the review.
Our server, Katie was excellent. Soft shell crabs were a treat and the crab cakes were delicious.
Every detail is considered and thoughtful. From when we walk in the door thru to our warm departure, we make this our Sunday night spot weekly. Everything on the menu is delightful; the wines are great and the service is excellent. Inside and outdoor dining. Special dietary needs are met flawlessly. The char is especially succulent and the mussels are worth the trip alone. We love it.
My husband and I had a wonderful meal! Our waiter was fantastic!
