Taking its name from the mythological lion-headed, eagle-winged monster—Grifone's statues and paintings inside depict the restaurant's namesake—this cozy Northern Italian restaurant flies below the radar. It is all about sauces, with many dishes reflecting the restaurant's regional roots with wine or butter-and-lemon sauces. A thin glaze of seasoned white wine sauce adds a sharply intense flavor to the large slabs of swordfish, while the tomato and cream sauces do more than just complement the various pastas, they add a finely calibrated sweetness. — David S. Grifone Ratings and Reviews
We had a very disappointing meal. The clams and pasta dishes we ordered were OK, but only average. My veal dish - a classic preparation that I often order - was terrible; the quality of the veal was fine, but the breading was partly burnt, and the dish came with very little sauce. When the waiter asked how my entree was and I said "not so good," he just walked away, he couldn't care less. Old-style Italian food can be wonderful; Grifone's food is mediocre. I don't understand the glowing reviews others have posted about this place. I know I won't be going back.
This restaurant is a gem in a bustling and lively city. It is small, cozy, and quiet. Our group of seven had a lovely meal. We were able to converse with one another, while enjoying a delicious dinner. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and spent time explaining the specials. Such a nice experience. Would definitely recommend it!
Absolutely wonderful in all regards. Food superb, service warm, timely, and professional, ambiance classic. My first time here was our visit December 2nd, 2017. This is my new NYC favorite. Just a first rate, classy spot all around. Mario the host was wonderfully engaging and he made us felt like we had been customers for years. One of the best restaurants, not only in NYC but anywhere in the country.
Our waiter was excellent. Our food was out of this world good. The decor was 1970's JC Penney. The food was so good you forget was the surrounds look like. We had nice appetizers and delicious main dishes, swordfish, veal, scallops, etc. Each of us would total recommend!
It is always a delight to dine at Grifone. The food is exceptional, the owner is attentive to his guests, the ambiance is quiet and respectful of guests, and the wait staff is very obliging. We enjoy each and every visit, and take our friends and family here for celebratory occasions.
The place just looks tired. The bathroom was so outdated and was not working. The salads were great but the entrees were just okay. Side pastas were bland. They were slow to refill water and did not ask if we wanted a refill on our wine until the meal was over - which was too late. They need an update bad
An old time gem on the East Side. Food never disappoints, always fresh, always spot on! Authentic Northern Italian cuisine as can be attested by their superb sauce preparation. While I had a simple, delicious baked Branzino w/evoo, garlic/parsley; my guests had pasta w/ragu' sauce and a chicken w/eggplant prosciutto and fontina cheese. Exquisite, on all counts. Desserts were awesome! This is Italian!
Staff is professional, well versed in the make up of each dish. They are well schooled and one feels at ease with their recommendations. They know their food & preparation methods. Wine list is compiled well, offering diverse selections at a wide price range. Something for everyone.
Mario, the proprietor, takes close care and personal attention to your every need. Friendly, expeditious service is the norm. I make it a point to dine here as frequently as possible. The food is simply superb! Way to go Mario!
As is always the case when we go to Grifone, the food and service were excellent, and the ambiance was perfect for a family dinner with my youngest sister and her family. The kids loved their food, the salads and soup were excellent, and the entrees were all superb. Grifone is a neighborhood gem, and we take many of our friends and family for dinner when they are visiting. The owner is always gracious and welcoming, and the second time we went to the restaurant, he pointed to me and said, "I remember you because you carry yourself as if you are a French woman." Needless to say, I appreciated his comment.
We've been dining here for special occasions for over 15 years. Mario, the maitre'd, is an institution. Red wine choices are top-notch. Occasionally one gets the pretentious waiter, which is why I rated service as only "good." Seafood and pasta are prepared to perfection.
Don't let the worn sign outside or the sparse lobby/stairs scare you because once you enter the restaurant it's first class all the way. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and added to our overall positive experience. Try the Lasagna Bolognese if you're lucky enough to have it as a menu option.
Two blocks from the UN, Grifone is a authentic North Italian restaurant with a charismatic and attentive staff. If you want to actually have a conversation, it is wonderfully quiet. It is not a trendy or fashionable restaurant, which is why I like it so much!
