Excellent. Veal is superb. Specialty salads are truly special. Great value, especially in NYC.
The place is really terrible. Grey, dirty rugs, no atmosphere whatsoever. Food is greasy and fattening.
My favorite restaurant in New York City.
Mario and his staff are 1st class like restaurants used to be in old time New York. I feel like I’m the only person in the restaurant as I’m waited on hand and foot.
Thank you Mario and staff
I will try to be more of a weekly regular.
Food and service always excellent.
Authentic NY small restaurant; elegant atmosphere.
Prices are not inexpensive; closes relatively early - American, not Italian, hours.
My favorite NYC restaurant.
Classic old world Italian cuisine in a townhouse setting. It's like Nana used to make!
This is a great traditional Italian restaurant with both the typical well loved dishes one would expect and a wide variety of specials each night - there were 5 on the night I dined. The value is exceptional, especially for Manhattan. I had the Veal Scallopine Limone with capers and it was prepared to perfection. Mario and his crew are very accommodating and unlike some places in New York they really value your business. Next time, I will likely dine there both nights I am in New York.
This restaurant is exceptional for its quiet and pleasant environment, but not much else.
It starts off giving a very poor impression because the entry is dilapated and dirty. The restaurant itself is much better.
The food is merely average. Salads were fresh but uninspired. Burata was fresh, but served atop a cold, under-ripe tomato and along side sundried tomatoes (probably from a jar), olives and a single slice of prosciutto. There was so much empty space on the plate it was sad. For $23 they should be embarrassed.
The octopus special was very tasty, but again, the presentation was pathetic. A whole baby octopus plopped onto a plate that could barely contain it. No garnish of any sort. They really need to work on that. It doesn't take much and a little effort there can go a long way toward upping one's impressions.
Pasta dishes were acceptable.
Veal a la grechia was a bit salty but also acceptable. Again - the presentation was weak - a single piece of curly parsley.
Seriously folks. This is 2018 and everyone who eats out watches the Food Channel or the Cooking Channel or any of the morning or afternoon talks shows that frequently feature food segments.
They should watch too - because the experience is as dated at the 1999 and 2000 Zagats review in the aforementioned entryway.
Dining at Grifone is never disappointing. Mario treats everyone as family. Food and service are spectacular! Have several friends and business partners frequenting the restaurant now as well! Always a favorite.
This restaurant is very dated. They are quite nice but it is in desperate need of a renovation. It always seems to smell bad and the food is mediocre at best.
I should not have been able to make a reservation for 2:30, because the restaurant closes at 3:00 before opening a couple of hours later for dinner. The restaurant accommodated us, but it was uncomfortable.
Grifone seems a bit like a relic from the late nineties with good Italian food, very attentive service, and plenty of beige decor. Unfortunately, it was completely dead — literally more staff than patrons on a Saturday night — and the fare didn't come close to warranting the price.
Incredible hospitality and unparalleled Italian cuisine. Will be returning here everytime I'm in the city!
My wife and I went here yesterday for dinner and it was awesome. The service was excellent and they were very friendly and let us sit wherever we wanted to. The food was excellent - we had seafood fettuccine and lasagna bolognese. I would recommend if you want a quiet romantic dinner with great service.
A fabulous spot! Great food, very helpful and knowledgeable staff, brilliant choices - a must on everybody's list that is looking for genuine and friendly Italian!! A neighbourhood gem!
Always a treat where they'll accommodate whatever you'd like that makes you happy. Convivial, quiet dining where you can always hear what your tablemates have to say and service that's par excellence. The sine qua non of fine New York dining.
I had Osso Buca and my wife had the calf’s liver special. Outstanding and the service was awesome. As good as it gets for Italian meal.
Menu et menu du jour três intéressant. Qualité de la carte des vins et de la nourriture excellente. Decoration a besoin d'une mise a jour, odeur d'humidité dans le restaurant.
I love this place been coming here since I was a kind. Was very disappointed this time when had a good dinner, but my vegetarIan didn’t like her dinner (first time ever). More than half our bill was bottles of wine. We gave 12% including all the alcohol. I was disgusted when the came back and demanded we double our tip. Never seen anything like it before. This place is great but hate the experience I had this time.
I highly recommend Griffone for a special occasion meal or everyday dining. The services is superb and the food absolutely delicious. You can have meals prepared any way you like. Will definitely go again and again.
They always find a way to make you most comfortable upon arriving. You are treated like family. Mario the owner greets you like a long time friend and caters to your every need. He will prepare cocktails for you and recommend their daily special. Go with the special, it is exquisite, be it fish, veal or pasta. This is a traditional Northern Italian fare featuring Branzino, pasta, ragu sauces, veal, mushrooms. Perfect for winter months, a hardy fare.
Papardelle with veal sauce cannot be topped. Various veal and chicken dishes are flavorful and imaginative. Very nice wine list, compact and reasonably priced. Save room for dessert, the multi layered mascarpone filled, pastry is amazing! Great for pre-theater! Griffone is Northern Italy at its finest!
Food ok and wine overpriced by a lot. All sides extra. So no value here
Was really dissapointed. The restaurant is incredibly over priced for what you are getting. My shrimp dinner was average to below average and was thirty five dollars. The restaurant smelled very musty. The carpet looked old and worn. You enter and first thing you see is an old staircase with dirty carpeting that has a funny smell. Had the meal not been over 200 dollars for two people I would have not been as bothered by decor. But with prices like that the food and atmosphere needs a complete overhaul.
Great meal and great service, only problem we had was with the rude lady who takes your hats and coats, she really needs some customer friendly skills. Apart from that, very nice evening.
While the food was delicious and the service excellent, the charge of $38 for 2 coffees and 2 desserts seemed a bit outrageous
We had a very disappointing meal. The clams and pasta dishes we ordered were OK, but only average. My veal dish - a classic preparation that I often order - was terrible; the quality of the veal was fine, but the breading was partly burnt, and the dish came with very little sauce. When the waiter asked how my entree was and I said "not so good," he just walked away, he couldn't care less. Old-style Italian food can be wonderful; Grifone's food is mediocre. I don't understand the glowing reviews others have posted about this place. I know I won't be going back.
It's a old fashioned restaurant that runs like a family business. my colleague and I enjoyed the food. The service was personal and attentive. will go back again.
Warm and wonderful place, and loved the owner/manager..
This restaurant is a gem in a bustling and lively city. It is small, cozy, and quiet. Our group of seven had a lovely meal. We were able to converse with one another, while enjoying a delicious dinner. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and spent time explaining the specials. Such a nice experience. Would definitely recommend it!
Absolutely wonderful in all regards. Food superb, service warm, timely, and professional, ambiance classic. My first time here was our visit December 2nd, 2017. This is my new NYC favorite. Just a first rate, classy spot all around. Mario the host was wonderfully engaging and he made us felt like we had been customers for years. One of the best restaurants, not only in NYC but anywhere in the country.
A classic and well run Italian Resturant that is down to earth.
Great place. Traditional old style Italian. Wonderful food & service.
Sleeper legit Italian food. Mario will make sure you have a great enening
The food was extraordinary and the service was prompt. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable.
The owner made us feel at home and surprised us with a special treat, “creama fritta”. My favorite NY Italian restaurant.
Our waiter was excellent. Our food was out of this world good. The decor was 1970's JC Penney. The food was so good you forget was the surrounds look like. We had nice appetizers and delicious main dishes, swordfish, veal, scallops, etc. Each of us would total recommend!
It is always a delight to dine at Grifone. The food is exceptional, the owner is attentive to his guests, the ambiance is quiet and respectful of guests, and the wait staff is very obliging. We enjoy each and every visit, and take our friends and family here for celebratory occasions.
Traditional and old world. This is a cozy restaurant on the East side.
Amazing in every way. Food is from scratch, service is top notch. You feel like a celebrity with how well you are treated.....and don't miss the desert and home made grappa
The place just looks tired. The bathroom was so outdated and was not working. The salads were great but the entrees were just okay. Side pastas were bland. They were slow to refill water and did not ask if we wanted a refill on our wine until the meal was over - which was too late. They need an update bad
Small, local neighborhood traditional Italian restaurant. Great professional wait service team. Broad Menu selection and several specials. Worth experiencing.
I have been to this place more than 20 times but it was the first time I was treated so badly (insulted) with the server. There were a very friendly server but he was not there on the evening unfortunately.
