Grey Gables Inn
Always a favorite! You can count on the food and service being very good!
This historic restaurant features local whitefish and other lake fish, in a beautiful setting. You feel that you have been transported back in time, and the dining room looks like someone's very fancy house complete with crystal chandeliers. Enjoy a leisurely meal where you can chat with friends for hours and don't ever feel rushed.
Always dependable Excellant food and service ! The ambiance is unsurpassed, a Charlevoix jewel.
The food was good and the atmosphere delightful. A bit noisy but the yellow room is quiet enough. My main complain is about the service of the waiters. Jay and Mark (I think) were our waiters. This is the second time I have had this experience. To sum it up, the wait staff was inattentive. We were promised a bread basket but had to ask for it 2 more times as well as getting water glasses refilled. Each time we had to flag down a waiter and ask for more water. Once flagged down they did good service but they had no initiative about asking what we needed in advance or being watchful over the table to see we needed water or bread and such.
Food and service were great, as always. We'll probably see you again next month.
We started with the seafood fondue, which was light yet extremely tasty. For dinner, we had the Stuffed Whitefish and Caramelized Scallops and both were excellent. They also have a large wine list, which we paired two white wines with our dinner. The restaurant has a more intimate setting and the service was fantastic. I will definitely come here again when we are in the area.
Had the 2 for $48 option and it was great! Everything about the dinner was perfect
We sadly 'celebrated' the final supper of summer with our neighbor and some other friends. We're hanging around for a while but our neighbor left for the season. It's a great spot for dining and enjoying friends.
Best prime rib ever. We loved our 40th wedding anniversary dinner at Grey Gables.
Very nice evening with old friends who had never been there before. Waitress Karen was very helpful with their selections.
Strange protocol on food. Make sure you decide what you want to eat before you come. They have 2 menus one for the bar and one for the dining room. So if your wife wants one meal from the opposite menu you HAVE TO sit at the loud bar, that's fine but a ridiculous rule considering it's 2 feet away (bar vs dining room). So we had to move to accommodate. Other than that we had a great waitress Jordan who's extremely energetic and attentive. She knew her menu very well and the regulars seemed to really like her. Food was great and portions good also. Other than that menu deal I was happg and I'd go back for a special occasion.
we were celebrating a birthday and engagement of my granddaughter and were well satisfied with the food and the service.
Always great. Never disappointed.
Super food and service. Love the atmosphere!
THE FOOD WAS GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT. A PREVIOUS DINING EXPERIENCE (LAST YEAR) WE HAD AN ABOVE AVERAGE EXPERIENCE. PROBABLY WON'T BE ON OUR LIST TO GO BACK
We had an amazing dinner. Food was top notch and our server Jordan was simply amazing. She made sure the evening was 5 star. We are a little weary of fish dishes as some are pretty fishy tasting. The white fish was prepared perfectly and the sauces were great. So was the bottle of wine. I will ask for Jordan again as I probably did not tip her enough this time. !
The prime rib is always great here. Entree specials are also real winners. We have visited a few times this summer; the service is friendly and very helpful, but sometimes can be a little overwhelmed and slow. The wine list is extensive (on an electronic device).
Excellent food. You get what you pay for. We stayed at the Inn next door so tried this as it was convenient. Was wonderful.
Could use a good detailed cleaning. We sat by the window and there was some trash sitting on the window ledge. Bathrooms were dingy. There was a dirty used napkin on the floor under my chair. Husband ordered the prime rib which was great. I had the bolgenese which was delicious. The fresh warm bread and house made scones in the bread basket were amazing. Only thing that was a disappointment was the onion ring appetizer. No flavor to the onion rings and the garlic aioli was also lacking in flavor. Very accommodating to kids.
A local favorite of ours. We always enjoy dining there and taking friends there, too.
Enjoyed our 1st visit. Will be back. We’ve had a cottage on Torch Lake for 20 years and have been coming to Charlevoix for 40+ years! Can’t believe we never ate at the Gray Gables! Will visit again & bring guests.
We had a wonderful dinner at Grey Gable. food was excellent. A charming upscale atmosphere. Great service. Very reasonable Before 6 pm fixed price special is fabulous deal
Sweet corn soup special was fabulous and our server Cheryl wonderful .
Great location in Charlevoix, old inn with charm and ambiance. Great service, ask for Pam if you can. Running a great dinner special before 6pm, 2 salads, 2 entrees, 2 desserts and a bottle of wine for $48. Whitefish is delicious
While on vacation, we drove to Charlevoix from Petroskey to tour the mushroom houses (very interesting) and have dinner. It was a Friday night and raining so we did not get to see what the outside seating was like. The restaurant was packed and the noise level was high. We ate in a small, cozy enclosed porch area which was not as noisy. The food and service were very good. I would go back again.
Had the white fish special that was very tasty. However, found a few bones and scales in fish. Manager gave us a dessert upgrade.
Everything was good, as usual, food, service, atmosphere. The kitchen staff accommodated my wife's dietary concerns.
This was our first visit and we found just about everything to be wonderful. Service was prompt and knowledgeable - great creative menu choices - nice drinks - good value - we thoroughly enjoyed the food and drink
Each room has its own feel. Loved the cheery front room with lots of windows and bright colors. Food was excellent. We had the prime rib and pasta. Both were well prepared and very flavorful.
My husband and I were in Charlevoix on a boat trip and found Gray Gables in Yelp. We were attracted by the comments online and the menu, but we were sold by the free shuttle service from the marina. Otherwise, we would not have been able to get to the restaurant.
The food was delicious. The sweet corn chowder was exceptional and beautifully presented: the soup bowl was served with the corn and chive oil and a dab of something (sour cream?) in the bottom, and the waiter poured the hot chowder mixture from a pitcher over the corn. Beautiful and truly delicious.
The scallops over polenta was quite good but a bit on the skimpy side (3 small scallops). Were I a man, I might have felt under-fed. The bread (and butter) was also quite good and included several slices of a typical but excellent loaf plus two small sweet scones. All delicious. We asked for olive oil instead of butter, and it promptly appeared. We did not order dessert.
The staff was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without being too much in evidence. The most "fun" part of the evening was the tablet with the automated wine list. I had never seen one, but it was very user-friendly and informative.
It couldn't have been a nicer evening!
We recently had a great dinner at GG. Monkfish wrapped in bacon was an excellent special. The chef/owner is inventive with daily specials and is one of the most innovative chefs in the Charlevoix/Petoskey/Northern Michigan area. Local whitefish/walleye/perch are from just down the street. Prime Rib is the best in the area. Oysters have recently been excellent. The staff is excellent and the core group does a fantastic job. In the peak summertime - July and early August - the pressure is on and a lot of additional help is needed to meet demands. The wine list was upgraded this summer and is a good offering of styles and price points for all budgets. Don't miss GG's.
Wonderful atmosphere! Food was very good and prompt. The staff were attentive and very friendly!! Highly recommend!!
Food is always excellent as well as the wait staff.
Specials are always good.
The early two for dinners are a best buy and it comes with a bottle of wine.
The entrée choices with the 2 for special are good. Had all of them....
This is the first time we have had bad service. No bread was served. No water refilled and part of the meal was cold.
Food was very good. Had a nice early bird special. Fish was very fresh. Wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive.
Food was great, pleasant server, nice environment. Second time this season and both times were great.
I was not impressed with the food. The taste was okay and the quantity was small. My daughter did really like her prime rib. The atmosphere is great.
We four are visiting from FL and were especially eager to have the whitefish (although one of us ordered something else). The fish was delicious as was the ambience. Two of us were return visitors and Grey Gables certainly lived up to our memories. A lovely place in a lovely town.
Our first experience with GG was the night of our recent wedding anniversary. We wanted to dine somewhere we'd never been and hoped to find an upscale experience worth the expense. We had driven by GG many times in the past and noted the many cars and pedestrians coming and going from there so it began to seem like a potential choice for a special event. I was able to reserve our table online and received confirmations. When we arrived, we were greeted and seated immediately at a wonderful table I would have chosen myself. The service and food were great and I'm certain we'll be returning to discover many of their other menu selections. I part with this … try the whitefish stuffed with shrimp and spinach.
Food was outstanding. Waiter was great! Only one complaint - no olives in my martini:( But the martini was excellent:) Lovely setting.
My husband & I live in Midland, MI but bought a lake house in Charlevoix, MI in 2016. Since that time, we have eaten at the Grey Gables on 4 different, "special occasions" including: New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, My Birthday and, most recently, our wedding anniversary. And, I can honestly say that we have had magnificent service and food every time! They consistently deliver a great dining experience and so, I would highly recommend this restaurant and will continue to go back there again and again. My only area of criticism, albeit very slight, would have to be that the historic, Victorian-style building that gives this restaurant so much of it's great ambiance and charm, can be a little cold at times (if seated near a window) in the Winter time so, be sure to bring a shoulder wrap or sweater during those times of the year.
