The best word to use is Underwhelmed. Given the reputation and buzz I was expecting a WOW and basically got a MEH! The food while interesting was bland and flavorless. The highlight of the meal was the sautéed peppers that was a side that we had as an appetizer. A few Spicy ones mixed in with well prepared blistered peppers. Other than that most of the meal was under seasoned. Well thought out and interesting ingredients but again underwhelming in the complexity of their flavor profiles.
The service, at least for our table, was substandard which could easily be corrected with proper training. All other tables received bread and nuts, ours nothing until we asked and got bread and butter. As we ate an over bearing staff tried to take dishes away at the moment we put down our utensils. Our plates still had food on them! Over and over they tried to remove plates still being used for eating our meal.
Our primary wait staff the brought us our bill with the previous dinners tap on it just zeroed our through some odd combination of calculated cash payments on our bill. She then proceed to tell us that she had forgotten to close out the previous check on that table. For a restaurant at this level the attention to detail was non existent! I travel to SF frequently for business and team dinners- will not eat here again and tell others to avoid it. Too many other good options.
Our second visit and the first in 20 years, Greens is still a wonderful treat. The food, vegetarian, matches the amazing view of SF bay and the Golden Gate Bridge
Classic vegetarian fare with fun variety. Overlooking the water. Great time
When you use fresh, local ingredients, and have talented chefs- it will always be a winning combination!
I love this place ❤️
I have been here 3 times over the years and have always had an excellent meal. And—-I am a meat and potato guy—-not vegetarian in any way!!!
Greens is consistently one of the best dining experiences in San Francisco and one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in the world. I never tire of the breathtaking view but Greens does not rely on the vista to keep customers happy. Every menu option is locally sourced, sustainably grown, thoughtfully prepared, and beautifully presented. I always recommend Greens to out of town visitors and it is a favorite for family celebrations. Diners who might be skeptical of vegetarian fare are always happy and several friends have remarked that dining at Greens opened their eyes to the possibilities of plant based fine dining. Every guest will enjoy Greens.
one of the BEST dinners (out of MANY) that we have had!
food was great! ambiance the same...
My fave place for lunch with my young granddaughter. Child friendly food and service and views. And great meal for me.
Amazing food experience.
An outstanding restaurant. Greens is rightly famous as an institution for vegetarian cooking. But almost every dish has a thoughtful vegan alternative for those avoiding dairy, making Greens a paradise for vegans. In most restaurants adjusting for non-dairy involves taking out something. In Greens this involves substituting an equally delicious ingredient. And then there’s the view of the bridge at sunset! Can’t recommend Greens highly enough.
Beautiful setting with delicious food. Great service.
I always love the food and service. As a vegan, I know I have several options. The views are stunning. It is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I highly recommend Greens to everyone I know.
Have been here many times but food was better than ever this time. Can't miss with Greens.
Incredible dinner that makes me want to be a better veggie person. My wife is currently eating vegan and they accommodated her in amazing, delicious ways. Weather was perfect and the sunset was stunning. Highly recommend.
Our server CHLOE from Brentwood,Ca. Was excellent and the food was superb. We were with family from Naples Florida and they were very much impressed. Thank you. Dennis and Nancy Fulton
There was a 1 h wait between starters and entree, and the food is just very expensive. Many high end non-vegetarian profiled restaurants will have better vegetarian ‘alternatives’ at a better value. Although the site is spectacular and staff friendly, overall disappointed
Food, service, sunset all magnificent. An unforgettable night.
Amazing vegetarian food. The view was fantastic and the staff was so nice. Highly recommend!
Some of the best vegetables I’ve ever eaten. Lovely, delicious dishes that were fresh and flavorful and creative. Would eat there again in a heartbeat.
I have been coming to the Greens since 1979, the year it opened. It's as wonderful now as it was then and during the middle years too (I live far away or I'd come more often)! Most amazing atmosphere in SF. The menu is terrific -- always adding something new. The staff and service is great. Long live the Greens!
I love Greens. I love the views, the people, the food, the fact that I can HEAR what people at my table are saying! I love it that we sat at our table for 3 hours and no one seemed to mind -- granted we ordered 3 courses for brunch and there were empty tables due to Outside Lands. But it just felt like such a welcoming atmosphere. I feel this way whether it is a group of friends, or whether it's work-related, or whether it's my niece. I will never not think of Greens first when it comes to entertaining in a comforting yet elegant way.
Greens is a San Francisco institution. We live in the city and we are typical local foodies. Greens never disappoints! I have been eating here since the mid-1990s. Sometimes, the restaurant falls off our list only because we’ve eaten here often and we want to explore other restaurants in the city. Whether we’ve had a six month hiatus or a three year hiatus from Greens, the restaurant is always a wonderful experience when we return. And, we aren’t vegetarians! We know this restaurant does serve a lot of tourists since it is near Fisherman’s Wharf. They are the smart tourists who are willing to break away from the Wharf’s mediocre food scene and experience real San Francisco cuisine! This is a must try restaurant for all who are new to San Francisco. I have never met a local who has not eaten here and even more importantly, I have never met a local who doesn’t enjoy a Greens meal. You don’t need to be a vegetarian to eat here but you do need to love vegetables, especially vegetables that have been grown to taste good!
Always lovely to eat here. The food is imaginatively presented, incredibly flavorful and subtle. Great choices. Very accomodating. One of our favorite restaurants. Great views too. Good service.
For a group of 8, four of our entrees were much too salty. They were good, but not spectacular as had been the case some months ago. The long narrow table made it difficult for group conversation. A round table would be much better. In summary, we were expecting greatness, but were disappointed. Watch the salt!!
Absolutely wonderful! Great food, service & who can beat the view? We all agreed we could become vegetarians if we could eat here every day!
Still a wonderful place for vegetarians with amazing food and a view that cannot be beat. I've been coming since 1992 and I still love bringing friends here!
Great meal, wonderful ambiance, fantastic service!
There are new items on the menu - keeping the benefits of long-time favorites, but adding a twist. The traditional brochettes - which have been on the menu since day one - are now presented over a dish of mixed grains, and are even more appetizing.
I invited two friends to be my guest for dinner as a thank you for helping me last week in a stressful time. We were a bit mindful of our time because one member of our group cares for an animal on a med schedule. I ran 5 minutes late. My party was waiting for me. Hostess said we could wait a few minutes for table by the window or be seated immediately. We conversed for a minute, I turned back to hostess to ask that we go ahead and sit. She and the other front of house gentleman talked to one another for several minutes before acknowledging that I was standing there trying to ask them to go ahead and seat us. And service got worse from there. Took a long time for our server to greet us. Seemed like ages to get the wine we ordered. We were served food and no one checked back to see if we needed anything. Someone dropped off our appetizers, we asked her to please bring over additional butter (for the bread I had to ask for), salt and pepper. Don’t think we ever saw her again. I got up to open a cupboard where I’d seen salt and pepper to bring back to our table. A server gave me the side-eye for that. Tried to get our sever’s attention to order a second bottle of wine. No luck. Waived over the sommelier, handed her the empty bottle and asked for a second. She returned a few minutes later with an additional bottle of water. Slow, sloppy and inattentive. Disappointing.
A fantastic dinner with a gorgeous sunset! Who could ask for more?
Greens' 40th Anniversary featuring Alice Waters as the chef. An absolutely perfect meal! Can food get any better?
Great in every way, including the wine pairing which my wife and I shared. Even better than it was 20 years ago!
Soup was great. Rest of food just OK. Daughter had stomach ache afterward but not exactly sure what it was. Slightly disappointed but lovey place and would still come back but not for a while.
Had such a great meal Saturday night had to go back Sunday night.
We enjoyed our dining experience at Green’s and will definitely return! The food was really fresh and well prepared, although some dishes were much tastier than others. We especially LOVED the Corn and Ricotta Cakes, as well as the Summer Squash and Chanterelle Polenta.
Although we had a reservation there was a bit of a wait for our table—the complimentary rose champagne was a nice consolation. The staff was lovely.
We had a wonderful waiter from Moldavia, who was very thoughtful and attentive. The food was exquisite. We shared several starters, which was the way to go, and I had the polenta with truffles and mushrooms - one of the best main courses I have ever had. I’m going to dream about it and salivate in my dreams. It was that good. The flourless chocolate cake was also divine. I may remember greens on my death bed. And the waiter was amazing - thank you!
Amazing food made with creativity from fresh ingredients. Great service. Love this place - go every time we are in the area.
