The Private Cellar, inspired by Jefferson’s passion for wine, will be the hotel’s private dining room, and its walls will be lined with wine display cabinets and private wine lockers. Beneath a soaring, plaster groin-vaulted ceiling, guests will have the opportunity to sample the culinary talents of our culinary team complemented by wines from the hotel’s impressive selection of more than 1,000 labels. A dumbwaiter, fashioned after Jefferson’s own at Monticello, will deliver vintages from the cellar to the table. At 297 square feet, the Private Cellar will accommodate 18.

We’ve been looking at reviews for this restaurant for quite a while and finally made reservations for a birthday lunch. With our reservation we requested a quiet table and were extremely pleased to be seated at a romantic table within a nook with only two tables, a wonderful full ceiling skylight and beautiful green plants. Absolutely perfect!
We both ordered the lobster wedge romaine salad, served with hot rolls. Prior to ordering we asked about how the lobster was served and were pleased to learn that it is served as lobster meat, NOT chopped up and mixed with mayonnaise. We were both pleasantly surprised at the amount of lobster served on the salad.
The romaine was cut unusually into “vertically” long strips. Served with a lemon vinaigrette. This salad was absolutely wonderful. Ate every last bit.
We both had a lovely Riesling. No room for dessert.
All of the wait staff were very professional, attentive – excellent service.
We will definitely return to the Greenhouse at the Jefferson Hotel.
The Greenhouse is a very elegant place to have Sunday brunch. Our friends, cosmopolitan world travelers, were quite impressed with the sunny, airy ambiance of the restaurant. The food presentation was great looking, and tasted equally good. In particular, the Belgian waffles were light and airy, paired with sweet tasting berries.
I wanted a quiet place for a business meeting with a friend. There was no noise, so we were able to converse easily. The restaurant lived up to the excellent reviews and beautiful photos on Yelp. We sat at one of 2 tables in a private alcove off the main dining room which had colorful live flowering plants and a running fountain. The restaurant was very bright with natural light, but there's no view of the outdoors. No mind, the interior marble decor was classic and elegant. The service was excellent from the doorman, to the personable hostess, to the waiters. They brought us each a small footstool to rest our handbags. Never saw that before!! The place settings and china were beautiful. I had the hash brown which was very large, so it was undercooked in the center, unfortunately. Being vegan, they gladly substituted the accompanying sunny side egg and dried beef with asparagus and spinach, which I appreciated. The fresh squeezed orange juice was delish. Not sure it was worth $12 per glass, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The waiters didn't rush us, although they frequently stopped by to quietly see if we were finished. There were quite a few empty tables, but maybe someone had requested our choice table? The only other negative is that the restroom is one level down, but there''s an elevator. The trip to the bathroom was worth it. The chaise longue looked so comfortable, I was tempted to take a nap. I appreciated their mouthwash, after having eaten the green onions in the hash brown. The marble tile was beautiful, and the restroom was roomy, clean and odorless. Overall, I enjoyed my Sunday brunch. I recommend it for special occasions, or if you're wealthy, or can write it off as a business expense. Expect to spend close to $100 for 2 including tip, but without alcoholic beverages.
This is a beautiful space and the prices are comparable if not better than many other 'hip' brunch places that look like a remodeled garage. The coffee was quite good I was able to warm up my cup several times. The service was impeccable from door to table. Normally, I wouldn't comment on the chairs, but the seating at many restaurants has become unbearably uncomfortable. The chairs at the Greenhouse are plush and very comfortable. Additionally, the tables are not all smashed together--there's plenty of room for each table and a good amount of room for each seat at the table. The menu was uninspired and I think there was little that was memorable about the omelet or the lemon pancakes (which sounded amazing). I would come back with a friend or family member that wanted a comfortable pleasant meal with no crowds or 'scene'.
The food was delicious we ordered the lobster Benedict at 29.00 for one egg Benedict who knew you would think you get two eggs with an English muffin not worth it for the price and the waiter gave use the normal Benedict which cost 60 dollars per order he said he was sorry don't trust this place and very little lobster what a rip off
The lobster benedict served at brunch is delicious, and amply portioned. My friend and I were seated in the most adorable nook to the side of the restaurant although there appears to not be a bad seat in the establishment. The complimentary display of mini cupcakes at the end of the meal for my friend’s birthday was the nicest (and tastiest) gesture. From beginning to end, we were very impressed and left eager to dine there again!
The only comment I would make is that the restaurant seemed a little too warm. Not sure if it was where we were seated or just in general. Mostly restaurants seem to be too cool (too much A/C), but on Sunday, this one seemed warm.
I do love this place for a nice breakfast/brunch. I go there almost every time I'm in D.C. visiting my daughter.
Came for Sunday brunch for my birthday and we had a great time. This was our first visit to The Greenhouse, and I will definitely come back. I don't think this is an every day type of restaurant, as it's a bit posh, but I'd come back again for my birthday next year, or for another special occasion. We had the lemon ricotta pancakes (highly recommend), the baked hash browns (also highly recommend) and the French toast, which I enjoyed a lot, but it was not very french toasty (not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting).
The service was far from typical at the Easter Sunday Brunch. After being seated, no server approached my party of four for 20 minutes until I finally called him over from another table. He delivered hot tea without cream as requested. When he later delivered tomato soup and rushed away without leaving a soup spoon, I excused myself from my guests and went searching for a manager who witnessed for himself the appallingly lackadaisical service by our server and rushed to bring a soup spoon himself.
I have enjoyed Greenhouse on many occasions when servic has been impeccable. Easter Sunday was definitely an unfortunate exception.
I cannot begin to say how utterly DISAPPOINTED we were in our Easter Brunch experience at the Greenhouse. I realize this isn't Plume, their Michelin Star rated restaurant, but we expected much more from The Jefferson! First, I do have to say the hotel is beautiful inside and the staff were very friendly, but that's where the good news ends.
First things first, we were seated in an OK table near the entrance to the dining area. I realize all the table can't be the "top" but we found it unusual that we were seated next to another occupied table when there were multiple tables without anyone at them, that were more intimate. Second our server came over and took our order in a reasonable amount of time, but it then took 20 minutes for the first course to arrive. Mind you the first course had absolutely NOTHING in it that required cooking on ordering. It constituted of, pastries and bread, poached shrimp, Greek yogurt and berries and mixed fruit and berries. To compound this. We were still enjoying our first course, when our appetizer course arrived. Very UNSATISFACTORY for a restaurant associated with The Jefferson and Plume.
Wait... Because this poor service happens again. So the appetizer course was actually quite good. The Warm Smoked Scottish Sea Trout was EXCELLENT! The Rosemary Honey Glazed Easter Ham was less so, but still quite good. HOWEVER I kid you not, while we were about about half way through our appetizer the entrees arrived! To make an already poor situation worse, our server took them back to the kitchen and then once we were actually done with our appetizer he brought them back. Both of which at this point were not warm. Sigh...
So you would think this would be the end of the poor service, but it's not. I had to ask them twice to fill my water glass, after it was totally empty, same with the Prosecco we were having, which was beyond our reach.
WE WILL NOT RETURN nor will we recommend The Jefferson, quite the opposite!
Overall experience was good. However couple errors with our orders. First wife's Caesar salad came without eggs or anchovies so had to send back. Then bacon I ordered was a bit over cooked. Then ordered coffee but had no sugar on table. Finally took quite awhile for someone to come by, clear the table, see if we wanted dessert and then provide the bill. Also leaving no one came up to ask us if we had coats( we did and left them at the front when we arrived or to ask if we did valet. Again these are little things but for a restaurant of this quality a little disappointing. Nonetheless would return as the hotel has sentimental value to us as we had our wedding reception there 20 years ago plus the food overall was very good!
