About this restaurant

  • Great for craft beers
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Lively
The Green Dragon Tavern has a long and rich history, playing an important part in the freedom of Boston during the War of Independence. Established in 1654 The Green Dragon was a favorite haunt of Paul Revere (Whom we consider a close Neighbor) and John Hancock (who’s brother lived next door!). Indeed, as has been ratified by Daniel Webster – the famous historian, that it was in the Green Dragon that the plans for the invasion of Lexington and Concorde were overheard thus starting the famous ride of Paul Revere. Today The Green Dragon still plays host to a diverse and colorful clientele, though the practice of eavesdropping has long since stopped! ! With a full Lunch and Dinner Menu it is a popular eatery with visitors to Boston who enjoy dining in a working piece of History! With a full array of Irish-American fare and a wide of choice of Traditional New England Seafood dishes The Green Dragon offers a wide choice for even the most decerning palette.

I had reserved a table for 6 there at OpenTable-my family and I were visiting from PA. When we got there they said they ‘never check’ OpenTable and was extremely annoyed when I showed them the reservation I made on the app. They said with a party our size and since they were unprepared we’d have to wait so we took separate tables. Not once did they apologize for OUR inconvenience. it’s not our fault they don’t check the app...why even have this service available? The guy was EXTREMELY ignorant. Our server never asked if we needed refills or anything else-we had to flag her down every time. The place was small and she would walk by our tables but not stop to check on us. Bathrooms were dirty, neither locks worked in the stalls.

The music was too loud and not very good. We left after only a few minutes because we could not converse.

Great experience...food and drinks were wonderful in a very historic setting! Wanted to dine at this historic tavern for our last meal in Boston. Staff didn't have our reservation down but still accommodated our party with no wait! Really enjoyed food and atmosphere...

The food was just okay. I had the fish and chips, which were fine. But the coleslaw was almost warm, which is not good. The place has your average pub vibe to it.

Green Dragon was a place to go for a drink, beer, cocktails - but we really cannot comment on the food except to say we decided not to eat there. Here's why: After entering and looking for a hostess, I went to the bar and was quickly served by the bartender who said we could sit anywhere we wished - we didn't need a reservation. OK, we sat at at table, kept an eye out for a table waiter but never saw one - not just didn't we have one come by our table - we didn't see anyone being served. We spotted a stack of menus which we studied but the selection on the menu was very limited - no where near the selection in the menu that appears on the Open Table website. Out of the 50+ patrons (pretty crowded with folks enjoying their libations - it's a rather small pub), we spotted only one patron who had a little food on his table. We finished our drinks, closed the tab and left. It was a Monday evening about 7 PM. Our unusual experience did not match the various reviews on Open Table.

Nice spot, if you're compelled to do something "historic" near downtown. The food is a step up (in both quality, delivery and prices) to the other "historic" place next door, but you won't mistake it for gourmet. It's decent pub food prepared reasonably well (although the fish and chips probably wouldn't inspire a revolution, except maybe against soggy breading...). Vibe was fun, beer was cold and the staff nice.

When we arrived there was no table or seating available. I was told that the reservations were checked 2 hours prior and they did not have any. I informed her that I made the reservation 1 hour prior, and she basically said, let me reiterate, I checked 2 hours ago and there was nothing. So we left...

This is a place that our American History can be said to start. Very nice to see the tavern is still in operation. The team was friendly and attentive. I recommend the Sheppard's Pie and for starters the Chili.
