Greek Taverna - Montclair Ratings and Reviews
We've eaten here several time and this was our 1st disappointment. We called ahead to verify their exceptionally good mango salad was available. They confirmed it was. We would not have dined here if it was not.
When we arrived the salad was not available. I tried to order the (briam ..spelling?) vegetable mix and it also was not available. It seems the chef was not in this day (so who did the cooking and how fresh was it really?). I may not return to this restaurant....
We have eaten many times at the Montclair Greek Taverna, and never been disappointed. I had the whole fresh fish and it was great as always. The service was perfect. The noise level is a bit high when the restaurant is crowded, which it was on Saturday evening. Very large portions and moderate prices -- with a varied menu that sometimes makes it difficult to choose because of having developed so many personal favorites.
We've eaten here many times and never had a problem with an entree. However, the special Chilean Sea Bass was undercooked and full of bones and management would not take it off the bill or even give a discount. The waiter felt so bad he comped us 2 desserts. My gyro platter was very good.
We were going to a show at the local Wellmont Theatre. Were in the mood for Greek and found this on Open Table. Made a reservation for two @ 5:30 and we were actually the first two to arrive, but that quickly changed and tables started filling up, quickly. Food was really great. The beet salad was tasty and a right balance of the pickling of the beet and the smooth creaminess of the hummus on which it was served. A spanakopita appetizer was nothing exceptional on presentation, but nonetheless good and tasting like someone's grandma made it (a very good friend's grandma, to be exact, so it conjured up all sorts of good memories). One entrée as sea bass, which was cooked perfectly with roasted, seasoned grape tomatoes and carried a side of Greek fries; unlike other Greek places to which we've gone, where fries are usually wedges or true fries, covered in olive oil and spices, these were thick chips made from smaller potatoes, and they were good. The other entrée was baby double-loin lamb chops. I ordered them rare, assuming since they were small, they would more likely be medium-rare. They were somewhere in-between, which was fine by me. They were well seasoned and tender and I had no shame in picking up the bones to get all the delicious meat. Desserts were Bugatsa Tou Pardari (custard wrapped in phyllo) and Ekmek (kateifi) ... both were standard and sweet--which paired well with the Sangiovese wine we had. One mention: the website and other on-line spots suggest this is a BYOB, but they do have a nice wine list and I was glad, because I had just grabbed something from my fridge and found something I really liked on the menu, which was reasonably priced. We'd definitely go back!
It was a very quiet Thursday evening. My friend and I opted to sit outside. Our starter was the fried eggplant and zucchini chips with dip, which I order every time I eat here. It was wonderful as usual. They also bring toasted pita with herbs to every table. While it is a BYOB establishment, thanks to a quick in NJ law, they sell bottles of a NJ produced wine, Hopewell. We did not order any tough.
Our entrees were the shrimp souvlaki and the shrimp in tomatoes with mushrooms, scallions and feta over rice. Each dish had a good portion of large shrimp cooked perfectly.
Our service was good. Will return.
Greek Taverna was a lovely location to celebrate my father's 70th birthday dinner. Our waiter and staff was so attentive to our party of 10. Even stored a special cake that I purchased in the refrigerated case so that it could remain intact and be surprise for my dad. I was one of the only people in the group that is gluten-free, so I cannot have pita bread, the kitchen cut up vegetables (carrots and cucumbers) so I could dip into some of the popular appetizers with my family. Overall we had great experience and the entrees were delicious! Lamb chops cooked perfectly! Seafood combo platter amazing and fish platter delicious. Our dinner was at 6:30pm on the Thursday before Mother's Day, so the place was not as crowded however I have been to Greek Taverna before when it was packed and the service was wonderful. It's BYOB so bring your favorite vino and enjoy!
Reservation made thru Open Table. Arrived & find out a large party was there so waited 45min to get a table! The whole restaurant was backed up for the whole night. Manager seemed indifferent about the wait or the fact a reservation was made by us. Servers scrambled to arrange, clean & set up tables & Hostess was very sorry because this group took their time leaving!! Food is excellent, staff terrific. Been here so often that this was a disappointment by waiting so long with someone that couldn't stand. Manager was eyeing tables to see whom she could move out faster because of the people waiting! Obviously they need better planning when booking parties. Give them an exit time or call those who have reservation to say it will be a wait!
