Great Maple San Diego Ratings and Reviews
Love the popovers, I do. But the rest of it isn't all that special. That zucchini pancake is tired and wasn't particularly tasty when I tried it a few meals ago. The eggs were OK, hard to ruin poached. My partner's pancakes were adequate, she said, but probably reheated. I think there's need for some work in the kitchen. Not such a great value proposition. The service was very good.
Very creative limited menu, everything we tried was spectacular. Portobello Mushroom Fries with Aioli dipping sauce was great. Tried salmon with horseradish crust, pork ribs... both were delicious and the presentation was clean and upscale. Lemon Crush pie for dessert was very lemon-custardy with traces of lemon pulp. Would have preferred a shortbread crust instead of the apple pie crust for that dessert, though.
Tried the butternut/apple soup...spectacular!
Had the shrimp risotto, good.
Son had the carmel salted short ribs....he is the hamburgler and only eats hamburgers. He LOVES this dish. Cudos Great Maple!
We should stop eating dessert...but cannot resist the apple pie.
Too much good food with fun, friendly service.
One critique: Turn the a/c down....it's winter.
As always, the staff was great. The waits are long, but with a reservation seating usually only takes 10-15 minutes. Bottom line, it's a popular place. Prepare to wait. Also, there are only 2 restrooms; 1 for men and 1 for women. I waited almost 20 minutes to go to the bathroom. So empty your bladder in advance. This visit I was very disappointed to see the menu had changed. The 2 dishes I get were both off the menu, including the Shrimp Polenta. When I found this out I almost left. But I stayed and had the delicious beignets! But with the menu changes it will definitely no longer be my go to for brunch. I hope to see some of the favorites return to the menu.
Brunch and Energy
Selecxted Great maple for a noonish Sunday Birth day brunch. Little did we know that the neighborhood flea market and farmers market were happening so parking was hard to come by. Good thing we had a reservation. our wait was apx 10 minutes. Oh yes, it was very noisy so turn down those hearing aids. Now: Bloody Mary's have choices that range from traditional to octopus. (yes octopus). French Toast logs big enuf to share. (and that maple bacon syrup!) The popover with goat cheese squash blossom is like a deconstructed eggs benedict. for vegans try the "stack". Did I mention the energy and noise? youngish crowd this sunday. Service was great considering the place was packed. By 1:30 the noise started to taper. enjoy!
My son had been pestering me to take him to the Great Maple. But every time we passed, the place was flooded with people standing outside. So I made a reservation on Open Table, and we went for New Year's Eve brunch. Now I understand what all the hub bub is all about! PHENOMENAL! I love this place! The decor, the vibe, the people, the giant food. The server was very attentive and our food came right away, despite the place being packed at 9am. We ordered the maple bacon donuts, which were 3 giant donuts covered in sauce and bacon, YUM! My son had the french toast logs, and they were 2 giant thick mega french toast logs, unbelievable. He ate 1/2 of one, so I recommend sharing the logs and the donuts. I had the salted caramel dollar pancakes, and could only eat about 4 of them by then. They were absolutely delicious! The coffee was an excellent robust dark blend, which was a nice surprise after disappointing coffee at so many other breakfast places. I give this place a 10 out of 10 and highly recommend it. I will be coming back again and again!
Wonderful brunch!! We started with the beignets and maple bacon doughnuts (which were amazing!) and then each had our entree and spirited beverage. Favorites were the Chilaquiles (recommended by our fantastic waitress) and French toast sticks! Highly recommend Great Maple!!
I treated a friend to Brunch for his birthday. We both agreed Great Maple has the best breakfast/brunch in San Diego. It was very busy so the noise level was s bit high but we got adjusted to it. Our waitress was excellent. She was very attentive and informative. I look forward to going there again. Love those popovers!!!
Perfect for spot for brunch with the gals!!! It was very busy, but got ahead of the crowd with my Open Table reservations. Inside was very loud. I recommend sitting outside. There are plenty of umbrellas for shade and just enough sun and it’s not as loud. We all shared our meals..pop over with beef brisket, chilaquiles, salmon board, pop over with squash blossoms, and the famous bacon maple donuts! Only negative is that the squash blossom only came with 1 squash blossom! Recommend everyone to come try this place out!! Forgot my servers name, but he was so friendly!
Very disappointed with this location. Have been to the Fashion Island Mall location in Newport Beach and love it! The menu in San Diego was not the same and the food was dry and over cooked. The ambiance was like a diner but the prices on the menu were still the same as Newport Beach. Will not be returning ever again. Maybe a remodel is due?
We love this restaurant! Our group of five was treated to delicious food, a great atmosphere, and even a Friday night champagne toast. Our server was delightful and the whole room was filled with positive happy vibes. It was a great experience for us all. We will be returning for sure.
Busier than I’ve ever seen with people waiting in the parking lot, but had reservations and waited only five minutes. Food was good but I prefer the dinner menu because I really like the salmon. Went with a friend who was pleased with how her meal was prepared to her request.
When it first opened the restaurant was great but over time it's declined in quality. What I've found is that for some reason the chef has an obsession with sweetness. Most of the food is just too sweet and that extends to the cocktails too.
From glazed this to sweet soup that, the food is sickly sweet to the point of being unpalatable.
Good quality ingredients can stand on their own, so when I encounter this type of cuisine I start to question what the kitchen may be trying to mask with sugar.
We love the Great Maple. The best restaurant I've found in San Diego during the past two years I've lived here. Can't say enough. The food and cocktails are wonderful. We love brunch. The French toast is amazing. The Chilaquiles to die for. Begneits are a must. I drove past this restaurant for months and was so glad when I finally took my family there.
It was nice to have a reservation and be seated within a few minutes, but the restaurant is so crowded and loud during brunch that it was hard to even speak to the person next to me. Food was good but service was extremely slow. Our waiter was friendly, but we hardly saw him. I would only go here on weekdays in the future.
Friends and I came to Great Maple for my birthday brunch. This was the first time any of us had eaten there. It was very busy and we waited a few mins past our 9am reservations to get seated. We ordered three entrees and shared them. It was way more than enough. The service was friendly and timely. Prices are a little more on the expensive side for brunch, so I can't imagine going here regularly, but I would definitely go here again for a casual special occasion.
