We arrived with a reservation and had to wait 20-25 minutes for a seat. The manager comp'ed our appetizer and then brought another appetizer when our meals were not coming out. There was a 65 person party upstairs, so their kitchen must have been slammed. We finally got our meal about an hour after ordering. I got the scallops. They were cooked well and were of high quality. Nothing else on the plate was edible. It was so strongly flavored, that it drown out the scallops. My girlfriend got the butternut squash risotto. The garlic was very heavy, you couldn't taste the squash, and the flavors just weren't good. My (adult) daughter got the game hen. The game hen was good, but the rice it was served over tasted like Chinese fried rice.
We had such high hopes for this restaurant, because it has a great sounding menu and a very good wine list. I had to put the service at a pretty low score, because what can you say if they cannot get you your dinner for more than 90 minutes after your reservation.
I would not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends.
Always looking for a nice restaurant with a good vibe (where you can hear conversations at your table), great food and not pretentious in Palo Alto. Gravity hit two out of three. The food was good. Nothing noteworthy. Nothing that I'll be craving anytime soon. With that said, the service, atmosphere and sound level were spot on.
The only vegan option is a big piece of tofu - lacking in taste and texture. Vegan is so much more than tofu, seems the kitchen is a bit lost in the past. Ordered very pricey champagne that we were not happy with and not offered the possibility of switching it for another drink. Awesome french fries and raspberry sorbet!
Organized a large group get together (15 people) for drinks and we all had a really good time. The place is open late (2am) and have a good bar and drinks menu (also good dinner and snacks).
Average food. Outrageous prices.
Great place for a date, nice size portions and great food.
Great atmosphere and good drinks (although pretty expensive). Appetizers were great (bruschetta, oysters). Salmon special was way overcooked but they got it right the second time and it was great.
Gravity Bistro & Wine Bar just keeps getting better over time. Staff is friendly. Welcoming at reception desk. Food prepared as requested. They allow for time to linger without feeling that they are anxious to get you out to turn the table - even though there was a vibrant buzz and steady flow of guests. Diverse crowd: all ages, backgrounds, languages, etc. You can tell that everyone felt comfortable there. Downstairs bar & high-top tables for dining and or drinking; upstairs tables for dining. Wine list extensive as expected. Menu is simple and creative, fresh ingredients, prepared at your pace, just ask. Enjoyed great wine, apps, filet cooked to perfection, lamb shank that melted off the bone & seasoned just right. Then we had to indulge in a "Chocolate Budino" - chocolate lovers must have - luscious without overwhelming! Our server, Caryl, was new, though did not use that as an excuse or allow it to stop her from dealing with our requests. She is genuine, confident, no attitude, service focused in an authentic way, providing just enough attention. The table assistants / bus persons were the same and unobtrusive. Often these qualities are missing in dining experiences. And if all that wasn't enough: true late night dining each night, with full menu until 11p, midnight or 1am depending on the day. That is fantastic! We love it. We travel a lot. We know that the staff can make or break an experience. Great restauranteurs know that hiring smart, training all staff well, treating them with respect and gratitude, empowering them to say yes, and having high standards that they willingly meet is as important as the great food created by the chefs. Rob Fischer knows this, too, and it shows. I do not know Mr. Fischer, but have dined at other restaurants he owns, as well, and the experience is consistent. I appreciate his obvious commitment to creating great dining experiences, and letting the teams in place create and deliver - for all of us. Kudos all around.
Very lively place, great service, but average food - appetizers came straight out of the fridge, average main course and unexciting dessert
Had New Year's Eve dinner and was treated to excellent service and delicious food. All the staff worked well together and it provided a good atmosphere and surrounding.
My daughter and I stopped here for dinner after shopping at Stanford. When we first arrived it was quiet but filled up as we ate. She had the steak and loved it and I had the short ribs and they were tender and tasted great. The creamy polenta that came with my dish was fabulous. I'd go back for that alone! Our waiter was great and at the ready to refill my daughter's drink or ask if we needed anything. Will definitely return!!
We had a number of varied palates to please and Gravity made our entire group happy! The service was outstanding, the food delicious and the staff patient with one of our party that needed more support! We will go back for sure and it's a nice new option in Palo Alto!
As usual, very attentive service and excellent food.
Food was good, the wine was excellent.
Went early, so can't talk about the noise. Food and wine were excellent.
When I made a reservation I was under the impression that I would be sitting upstairs in the dining area. Instead my table was not ready after a half hour after my reservation and I was sat in the bar section. I could not hear a thing and it was getting really rowdy. My food was over cooked and my drinks ticket took about 15 minutes to get to the table. The front of the house clearly has some operational issues to work through.
Five of us ate at the downstairs area where there are only high top tables . We were told
Only large parties were upstairs but when we went there later to go to the bathroom there were certainly a mix of large and small tables at lower tables.
The downstairs space was so noisy we could barely talk and my ears were ringing. We didn't stay for dessert or was so noisy.
The food was pretty good. The French onion soup was fine, nothing special. I had the scallops since the veggie sides looked really interesting. Well, they were but I couldn't taste them the portions were so small.
My husband had the Pork which was nice. A fiend got the risotto which was the best of our entrees.
As I tell all my friends, Gravity is the ONLY restaurant in Palo Alto where one can eat a quiet dinner (if upstairs) in an elegant setting. The food is excellent as is the staff. It's the perfect place for a special occasion meal. I always go there for my birthday and take friends there for any special occasion. I am always treated like a special returned guest.
Food and service was great. It would have been perfect only if the price is slightly lower.
Appetizers and cocktails are too expensive. The smallest, most average "romaine salad" (aka Caesar) I have had in a long time was $11!!! you have to deliver value, and this did not. I had a mediocre Negroni for $15 touting premium gin. It was a failure and way over priced.
The main course tasted great and was reasonable at $23 for a Cornish game hen and awesome faro. The server was very nice and professional but interrupted far too frequently. I suspect because the restaurant was not particularly busy and he had too much free time.
Server was terrible. Not engaged all. No smile. She seemed bothered when we asked questions or tried to get her attention. She forgot a few requests multiple times. Slow service in general. Hostess was good. Too bad server was exact opposite. Food was good. Good presentation. Given options in area, likely won't return.
It was my first time at Gravity. Restaurant is chic casual and quite loud wherever you sit as the bar and restaurant seating are on top of each other. Limited dining menu but what food was served was good. A vegetarian friend who asked for some cheese on her salad instead of bacon was surprised to find an $8 extra charge on the bill. Seems a rather petty way to make an extra buck when each of us was spending $75 each on dinner and drinks. Server was attentive at time of order but we were definitely "forgotten" as the evening wore on, and the drink that one friend ordered along with dessert was never delivered. Too many good dining options in downtown Palo Alto to make a second trip to Gravity.
Gravity is a frequent choice of ours (retired couple). The clientele is relatively young. The food choices are eclectic. My wife enjoyed a beet salad and a muscle dish. I had a duck confit dinner. Wine choices are extensive (of course). Our server (Celina) was attentive yet non-intrusive. Gravity remains one of our top Palo Alto spots for lunch or dinner.
Great selection of wine. Nice food choices too!
The restaurant was a nice spot to go. The check was around $100 for 2, we had dinner, 1 appetizer and each got a drink.
Our server was the best server I have ever had! Gave us a great recommendation and was extremely friendly and responsive. It was an older gentleman whose name I did not catch.
Food was good. It wasn't extremely quiet, but enough for my date and I to have a conversation.
Came for cocktails. Found a bartender (Judith) that is more of a mixologist. Tell her what flavors you like, and she'll mix something up for you.
Very interesting wines by the glass and flights. Whomever is in charge of choosing wines for their list, really knows what they are doing. Hard to find and specialty choices.
We didn't eat much this time, but the food menu was also interesting. And they have foie gras!
After the great reviews we thought it was a good choice for my daughters birthday. We ordered lemon drops which we had to return as they were too tart to drink. The appetizers we ordered were terrible. Totally lacked any kind of flavor. We had planned on ordering dinner but left for somewhere else. Very disappointed.
The service staff and the manager were excellent!! I highly recommend the Gravity!!
Service was sub par. Couldn't explain the items on the menu, slow to take orders, worst of all, basically rushed the customers to pay the bill and leave (when it was 8:30pm on a Saturday and there were only 2 tables with customers.)
Solid cheese selections
Good variety of food and flavors and great wine selection
We were in town as part of our vacation. Gravity was a lovely last meal in Cali.
The watermelon salad with arugula was refreshing, and had a really unusual and delicious blend of flavors. Our duck confit was divine! My mom found the service a bit disconcerting (she felt the waitstaff was eyeing us strangely for some reason), but it wasn't a dealbreaker.
We were there very early (5:00) on a Friday night so the restaurant hadn't filled up yet. But, I would guess it could be very noisy later in the evening as there is a large bar adjacent to the tables. The menu is quite extensive and the food was very good. The waiter was excellent and made some great recommendations. Parking is difficult.
Service and food were both below average, I don't plan on going back.
I recently made reservations for a group of 7 at 5pm when the restaurant was empty. When we got to the restaurant we realized we were being seated at bar tables with high chairs. One of the people in our group has mobility issues so we requested a low table, but they said they couldn't give us a low table, so we sat at a bar table. When we sat down the manager came over to us and told us that we would have to be finished by 6:30, which is a short time for such a large group.
When the runner brought out our food he said "I have some food" we asked him what it was and he said "I don't know, some kind of food." Haha, we figured out whose it was on our own.
We ordered apps and entrees, three of them were the scallops. Two of the scallops came out with the other food, but the 3rd scallops took 25 minutes more, they said they were "making sure they were delicious".
We finished our meals and paid by 6:30pm, there was still no one in the restaurant, including at the low tables.
Overall the food was fine, but not great, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Great menu, great wines & craft beers. Attentive and professional staff. Highly recommend the truffle & parmesan fries, as well as grilled scallops. Duck prosciutto was disappointing, as the prosciutto itself lacked flavor and mostly tasted like the balsamic covering it. Saffron risotto was also more bland than expected. Overall a really good dining experience though.
The server was very kind, bringing out a complimentary appetizer of white bean crostini when he saw I was waiting for a party to arrive. He continued to be attentive, even when it was clear that this group of women were not going to order much besides tap water. Despite the fact that we ordered only a medium cheese plate (3 small cheeses with condiments), one cocktail, and two glasses of wine, the bill was nearly $90. The cocktail was not particularly good, lacking balance, and tasted as though it had waited too long before service.
We left a generous tip to compensate for the small order.
Great for a light meal. Wonderful cheese, charcuterie and wine.
Came here for a late night snack. Sampled the Gouda, bleu, and goat cheese. Enjoyed the meatballs and craft made cocktails. Menu is limited but done right.
