Grasing's Ratings and Reviews
This was a great place for our birthday dinner. Having mentioned our birthdays on the reservation, there was a small decoration on the table, the server wished us a happy birthday, and the dessert we chose was on the house! The pork chop was out of this world and we enjoyed dinner seated by the window, which was an added plus. It was lively, but not so loud that you couldn't comfortably converse.
Hostess wanted to seat us at a 4 top table, I’ve worked in the industry and said we have no problem sitting at a 2 top since we are only 2 people. And she kind of gave us attitude as if we were the ones being picky when we were trying to respect the busy restaurant.
Also not sure why the Restaurant Told open table that we did not show up for our reservation.
Food was delicious, lobster Mac was good. Gin was tasty
Grasing's was delightful! The food was absolutely terrific and their wine by the glass selection was excellent. Our special occasion was a get together of 6 old and dear friends. The hostess decorated the table with little silver cut-outs. Several of us had a salmon ceasar salad which included a hunk of salmon that was perfectly prepared and very generous. The meal was over the top delighted!
We ordered Calamari n Crab Cakes for Apps, follpwed by Chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries and Fish of the day.
All the dishes were perfectly made, tasted yumm! And left us wanting for more, although our stomachs were full. We succumbed to the desert menu n ordered the apple caramel pudding that was super moist n delish. I paired fish n calamari with a Reisling from Del Terra, Monterey that balanced all the flavors well.
In all a very satisfying experience.
Will come again, if in the area!
This was a great "date night" locale! The food was amazing! I had the paella (the appetizer portion) for my meal and it was simply out of this world!!! I haven't had a paella any better! My hubby had the scallops and they were huge but tender and tasty! This was the perfect night out with my love!
We were there for New Year’s Eve dinner. This is usually a tough night for restaurants because of the demands on staff and kitchen. Nevertheless, Grasing’s did a superior job. The food was very good but the service was superior, particularly our waiter (Mike).
Always dine at Grasings on our trips to Carmel. Shared the calamari and wedge salad on this trip - some of the best calamari anywhere! and those were great starters. I had the paella, which was marvelous and so chock full of seafood that I just could not finish it. Hubby had the prawns with angel hair pasta, and enjoyed every bite! Always a treat!
Food was not bad but not very good. Nothing from appetizers or main course was notable or special. Waiter brought check while we were still eating. It was less than 60 minutes from time we sat down to time we left. Plus the place was 3/4 empty. The experience was no where near what we expected for $150. I would give a strong recommendation to avoid.
This place simply tries too hard to be more than it is. Food was very good, but not exceptional. Basics were missed: butter on the table was rock-hard cold and unspreadable on the very soft bread. Service was spotty. We inquired about our late starter; the server said that she forgot to put in the order, and that this was a problem she has. This problem was repeated when she did not return to take a drink order I asked for. Honestly, if a server cannot remember orders, perhaps she should write them down and check herself. Lastly, if a restaurant declines to serve tap water or filtered water so as to market bottled water instead, it should be honest about this: a little sign on the table stating “water is precious” is disingenuous or falsely pretentious. Could be a nice place, but needs to focus on fundamentals.
Christmas Eve - we frequent Carmel a couple times a year and always eat at Grasings. My filet was outstanding and my husbands prime rib was “ok” per him. My Caesar salad was disappointing but the side (Mac & Cheese) was wonderful. Our server was Al and he was outstanding, personable and funny. We were given a table next to the galley way and we felt a bit in the way.
A side note - we had lunch there the day before w/our dogs and the burgers were outstanding and great service as well (Melissa?) They were very accommodating to our dogs.
We were given a nice table by the window but there was not enough room between the tables. The servers had to squeeze between the back of my husband's chair and the gentleman dining with a group of 10 behind him. My husband is 6'7" tall, so it was quite a tight spot for him.
Outstanding meal and ambiance after making difficult choices from a wonderful varied menu. Grasings is first class in every way without being stuffy or pretentious. The service was prompt and attentive without being bothersome. The portions were generous without being overwhelming. The wine list is incredible. Next time we will arrive early to spend time in the inviting bar and maybe just plan to hang there some other evening. We came from San Jose and were not disappointed. Highly recommended!
Took mom for her 94th birthday. We were seated at a perfect table and the service was excellent. Best Old Fashioned I've had in a restaurant - rest of party also enjoyed their cocktails. Food was very good. Mom was quite happy for the experience of a "new" restaurant.
I recommend this restaurant for a special night out. White table cloths set the mood. The service was great: friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. The steaks were perfect doneness (thought there was no choice of sauces as per the menu on Open Table), the grilled vegetables were just the right amount of crunchy and the salads were not over-dressed. The crab bisque was very good and not too rich at all, highly recommend. Great choice in Carmel/Pebble Beach, we'll return on our next trip.
We ordered the warm spinach salad and onion tart, both were very good. Entrees were the short ribs and the chicken. My chicken entree was hot in temp and was good. My dates short rib entree was barely warm and very fatty. Also, his mashed potatoes were overpowered by salt. It's hard to enjoy a special dinner when your date can hardly eat anything on the plate. The pricing does not match the quality of the entrees. It was very disappointing. The service from the staff was very good. Not sure when, or if, we'd go back.
Extremely disappointed. I was traveling with one vegan and one vegetarian. This restaurant was highly recommended for vegetarian and vegan options. The very meat-centric menu said at the bottom "ask your server for vegetarian options." Good so far. When we asked for vegan and vegetarian options she looked dumb-founded. She was not aware the menu stated that. She was not informed about ingredients such as eggs and cheese in recipes. She speculated that there were only "one or two things" we could probably order. She said she tried several times to get the chef to provide some options but was rejected twice by the kitchen. After about 45 minutes she said the sous chef was willing to provide us with some sauteed seasonal vegetables. We quickly left after sharing one entree (the grilled portobello), and two sides (sauteed mushrooms and onion rings). It was harder for my vegan and vegetarian guests to eat here than almost any restaurant in memory. And the kitchen was epically unhelpful. Even simple things that would not usually be something to complain about - waiting ten minutes for our reserved table; needing to ask 3 times for olive oil as a butter substitute for the bread) - added to the experience of dissatisfaction. Ironically we fled to the small, funky Julia's in nearby Pacific Grove, recently touted by Food and Wine as the best vegetarian restaurant in California, and had the absolutely best gourmet pizza we had ever eaten with personal attention from the inspired and thriving young chef. This was a vegan pizza chock full of foraged wild mushrooms and spinach and white sauce with a black truffle crispy crust. Literally unforgettable. So all is well that ends well!
Dinner at Grasing's was outstanding. Service by Mike was superb and the menu choices plentiful. We enjoyed the lasagna and the prawns in addition to the Dungeness crab cakes and warm cabbage salad. Enjoyable dining experience overall as ambience was just right and noise level is low. Expansive wine list. Highly recommend!
We were quite disappointed overall with our whole experience here. It was a Saturday night so maybe when busy the weekend after thanksgiving standards slip. We reserved a table and were seated at a cramped table for two next to the stairs. It was busy and I asked that we be moved to a table not adjacent to a throughway. We were reseated in a better location but it was unfortunately busy with several large tables. We certainly felt we got less attention from our server having waited at least half an hour to order after been reassured by our server we were next after he opened a bottle of wine for a different table. He proceeded to help serves dishes to another table and take a dessert order from the table next to us before he finally took our order.
After an hour we received our starters. I had the filet and chop house chips. The steak was perfectly cooked but approaching cold and the presentation was unimaginative and ridiculously large amount of chips.
After starters were removed the server returned with menus which was confusing as we had not yet received our main. He realised his mistake and took them away again. After another long wait we received our main which was nice but by this point we had been in the restaurant for about 1.5hours.
All in all very disappointing service with potentially nice food options which are let down by presentation and length of time to receive. Expected this place to be a bit more polished in all fronts so my rating reflects this.
The service was great and the food was excellent. My only concern was it appeared a little overpriced for what we got, but that might have been because it is well situated in Carmel. I was also a little disappointed that my "stirred" Manhattan had ice floating in it, but I can't fault a restaurant too much for the lack of skill of one of their bartenders. The creme brûlée for dessert was also quite good!
They were very busy, being a Sunday evening. Our table was outside and the provided heaters just barely kept us from being too cold.
Some of the food was really delicious - could not have asked for better. But on one plate, the vegetables were not hot - probably sitting on a hot table in the kitchen too long.
Worst of all was the service! Our server was a very nice young man. But he did not pay enough attention to his customers, at least in our location. (Another table, as we were leaving, made the same complaints that we had made) At the start of the meal, things were really busy. By the end of the meal, most of the people in our area had left. (We were seated about 8:20 PM.) Yet the service was still slow! As we were waiting for our dinner dishes to be removed and to get the desert menu, I notices our server spending long periods of time simply talking with another table around the corner from ours, just chewing the fat, not discussing the food. I finally had to wave at him to get his attention. Yes, he did than promptly come over and get us started on the next part of the meal. But he repeated this talking with the same table continuously. It was very clear that we were very unhappy, and out server may even been the one who alerted the person who appeared to be the dining room manager, to come to us and profusely apologize for our service, and he gave us our desert and coffee free. But by then, I had simply had it!
I believe that this is the first time in my life (I am 83, so that is quite a while) that I have specifically given a tip of ZERO, and made a point of making it clear on the bill.
We have dined here in the past and have been VERY PLEASED with their service and food. And I hope that management will do something to assure that our experience will not be repeated, so maybe it will again be a very nice place to have a really good meal, served by professional servers.
