Grant Grill Ratings and Reviews
This is not a family style restaurant, the menu has limited options but usually has fish, meat, soup and salads. The bar does a great job with creative cocktails. The ambiance has a more intimate appeal and the tables were spaced well enough that I did not hear other conversations. The staff was friendly and attentive.
It is conveniently located to the Civic Center Theater and is a very good option for dinner before the show.
We had tickets to Hamilton at 7:30 pm at the Civic Theater and decided to have dinner beforehand at the Grant Grill at 5:30 pm, a short walk from the theater. By going early and putting money in the meter we were able to park on the street (parking is free after 6 pm), which was a real plus after the theater. We were given a nice oval booth for dinner and the wait staff was very attentive. We were brought warm focaccia bread and a amuse bouche beforehand. We shared a grilled octopus as an appetizer; it was OK, fairly bland, probably would not order again. Our waiter gave my husband a tasting of the soup, which he liked much better. We both had the sea bass which was excellent. I'm not sure what was under the sea bass, rather odd flavored green colored polenta (perhaps?) in the shape of lozenges. I didn't eat much of it. We had tea and coffee afterwards. The coffee comes in a coffee press, which is really nice. And the tea - lots of choices - in a wonderful Japanese cast iron tea pot. Our waitress brought us little chocolate cookies to have with the tea and coffee since we were too full for dessert. We were finished by 7 pm, in time to leave for the theater. Would definitely return here again if we had tickets to the Civic Theater.
This was our first time dining at the Grant Grill before seeing the show Hamilton and the experience added to the whole evening. We noted it was our birthday's when making our reservation on OpenTable and our personalized menus said "Happy Birthday." The staff is very professional and attentive and everything we ordered from the pre-dinner cocktails, to the appetizers (we had the "Mock" turtle soup which is basically braised short rib soup), and then the entree where my wife had the salmon and I ordered the scallops (first time as a main dish) and it was all excellent. Highly Recommend!
We enjoyed a delicious Pre-dinner cocktail and then were delighted to have a table in a quiet section of the restaurant. Our wait person, Brendan, was congenial, knowledgeable and catered to all our requests. The food was some of the best we had tasted. I had the ham, fruit, nut salad and my husband had the soup of the day which he said was delicious. We had a very drinkable Reisling and for our entrees we had the veal and the scallops. Then we finished up with tea, coffee and a port. A perfect way to celebrate our anniversary in an unrushed manner so we could savor all the delights of the meal.
Grant Grill is our 'go to' for pre-theater dinner and post-theater night cap. Service, food and ambience are all top notch. The staff goes out of the way to be friendly and promote relaxation and enjoyment. This particular night, we had the pleasure of meeting the manager Alberto, who is so friendly. We were seeing Hamilton, and the bar had a really fun themed drink - so fun! I can't wait for my next theater night to come back!
We had tickets to Hamilton and wanted to have a special dinner to mark the occasion.
We were seated at “The Mayor’s Table” which was tucked into a quiet corner of the restaurant.
The staff was aware of our timeline for the theatre. They were attentive without being “stuffy.”
The food was well priced, considering it was fine dining. And the bread: to die for.
Lovely environment, uneven food. My husband and I chose the Grant Grill for a special dinner during our trip to San Diego. The environment is as lovely as we remembered -- elegant and quiet -- a restaurant for adults. Despite a large pre-theater crowd, our service was very good. My meal -- abalone to begin and a veal chop was excellent. My husband's not so much. His special soup with muscles was just OK. He did not eat most of his large rib eye steak. He said it was tough, had a lot of gristle and tasted weird. I took a couple of bites and agreed.
Took my mom for appetizers and drinks before a civic theater performance because the grill is so close by...we had such a great time we came back after the show! It's located only 1 block away from the civic center, diagonally across the trolley tracks. Lounge stayed open till midnight with live music, food, and full bar. The food was excellent, with delicious drinks (I recommend the Iron Maiden - it's served with flowers in the cocktail, super cute), very accomodating service, and elegant surroundings. I highly recommend this spot as a native San Diegan, one of the best places in the city :)
We had a memorial dinner after the Moscow Ballet.
We had 3 well behaved young ladies with us, and the waiter treated them like special guests.
I had salad and scallops - excellent!
For us, this is a special occasion restaurant, perfect
before or after a show Downtown. Also - you can valet park here prior to your event, if it is within
walking distance. Enter on either 3rd or 4th for valet parking.
We really enjoy dining at the Grant Grill. The service is perfect, just the right amount of attention without being overbearing. The food is well prepared. The menu is creative with wonderful combinations of flavors. Please try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Overall a great experience. I had the cauliflower quiche. It was a small slice but came with side salad and delicious fried potatoes. Unfortunately, the quiche was filled with potatoes too. I think it should have Ben a frittata instead. Don’t need heavy crust plus potatoes in it it plus potatoes on the side. My husband had the duck confit on brioche. Delicious. Rock star entree. Service was impeccable
What a relief to rediscover a classic restaurant in downtown San Diego. Yes, prices are a little higher, but when you consider the cost of many downtown restaurants The Grant Grill at the US Grant is a real bargain. Great for all meals and afternoon tea. We’ll revisit.
Amazingly amazing!!!!! So imagine dinner at the usual hotel restaurant. Not such a great day dream, right? Now imagine one of the best restaurants you have ever been to and you have traveled the world and are a foodie. The experience here was beyond 5 star++++++!!!!! All of the restaurants that I have recommended before just got left behind. One of the 10 top restaurant experiences to enjoy before you die. Enough said.
Return visit to the Grant Grill dinning room. Best experience of the evening was the Modern Negroni Experience and Enjoyment. Good service in a quite dinning room. Cuisine good but.... needs some love ❤️ and attention. Lacked execution and flavors. Please adjust the ratatouille oyster mushroom dish!
Have had dinner here and the food was amazing. Their home baked bread is worth the calories - eat as much as you can. Gracious service. Nicely decorated and a fun history. Read the plaque outside the restaurant to see how women forced their way in when the lunch hour was for men only.
We were a large group so I was concerned about the Resturant accommodating us - we grew from the original 7 people to 10 diners. The Grant Grill team, however, did an amazing job. They set us up in the wine room and the food was great. The atmosphere was super special and we all greatly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks GG Team!
This is one of the most fussy, yuppie, overpriced restaurants I've ever eaten at. The ambience is lovely and the tables are private and quiet. I'm sure the glitterati and political elite of San Diego eat here on expense accounts regularly, but if you are looking for just some great food at a good value, this is not your place. My husband and I were staying at the US Grant and wanted a close place to meet our daughter who lives in the city. Our bill for 3 came to $175 with tax and tip. Probably typical in downtown S.D., the wine was $18 a glass. My husband ordered their table-side-mixed Negroni, at $18, which was an overly fussy drink, overpowered by the fresh rosemary in it. They raved that it won a big award for mixed drinks. My husband couldn't finish it.
Our meals were tasty, but portions are very small and placed on big plates to look like an art show with drizzles of sauces, etc. My husband and I split a sea bass entree and the portions were smaller than appetizers. They charge $4 for the warm bread, which was delicious, but I don't remember the waitress asking us if we wanted bread for $4. The carrot cake also looked over the top but, frankly, not as good as my own. The best part of the meal was the mock turtle soup which was essentially beef stew. I wish I had just ordered that for $12 for a small bowl, the bread and nothing else. The waitress and service was excellent but this is a restaurant for a certain group of people, of which I am not one.
We were delighted to discover that our “take home” left overs were carefully placed in the containers and closely assembled to resemble our original restaurant plate presentation.
This extra effort resulted in our second opportunity to enjoy our food and “eat with our eyes”.
Was really disappointed with our meals at Grant Grill. Flavors were bland and uninspired. 4 of us for dinner-lamb was not tender, sea bass-fishy, vegetarian dish didn’t have much flavor, scallops were the best of the 4 dishes but still not a lot of flavor. Way overpriced for the lack of quality entrees.
So happy with this restaurant. Went for brunch. Beautiful restaurant in the US grant hotel. Amazing, attentive and polite staff. Our food was absolutely delicious and unique. Drinks were pretty good too. I will definitely be returning if ever I am in San Diego again
