Grand Central Oyster Bar
Our new hours will be Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM to our last seating at 7:30 PM
Main Dining Room Seating
Multiple dates availableThe Main Dining Room is the grandest space in the Oyster Bar & Restaurant. Pass beyond the maitre d’s podium and you are under a sea of Guastavino’s graceful vaults. To your right is a deep alcove; to your left, two smaller alcoves lead to a grand arched window—pair to the one in the oyster bar. Move toward the far wall, and you under a half vault, with an intimate, square alcove to the left. The floors are of square terra cotta tiles, divided by bands of light and dark travertine. Our Main Dining room is set apart from the other dining areas which can comfortably seat up to 250 - 300 guests for a cocktail reception, depending on the setup, perfect for hosting a private or semi-private event for a variety of special occasions.
Saloon Dining Room Seating
Multiple dates availableAt the far end of the Oyster bar, under a sign in the distinctive typeface designed by Hans Küng and through a pair of swinging half doors, is the Saloon. You’ll find the same brown leather chairs and tables covered with red-and-white checked tablecloths, but the feeling in the Saloon is quite different from all the other spaces in the restaurant. We offer private and semi-private accommodations in the Saloon Dining area. We can accommodate up to 80 (100 with bar seating) or up to 120 guests for a cocktail reception

Disappointed this time. Maybe they need to warm up after being closed for Covid.
The service was lacking. No one cleared our appetizer plates or checked on us after dinner was served. I had to wave a busser down to get our check, when he brought the check he barely spoke a word to us. The food was not near as good as last time I visited.
So happy it has reopened.
Thanks. The restaurant is understaffed and the prices are very high.
My co-workers and I had a wonderful time. Glad to see it open again.
Fun place to go. Food and service great. A great tradition.
Fresh food very good service
I had a great time with friends, good menu and service.
The food was just OK. The Oyster Pan Roast didn't have many oysters and wasn't very good. The fried clams were decent.
Raw bar is beyond comparison.
Each selection of shellfish platter was superb
I have loved this restaurant since I was brought here two decades ago. It's beautiful and the food and ambience were always excellent.
Now a generation later, I wanted to bring a few family members who had never dined here before and it was an ok but not great experience.
The Oyster Pan Roasts were cold.
The lock on the bathroom stall was broken.
The bus boy snapped at me when I asked him to leave a plate when he came to clear the table. It wasn't really late and it wasn't crowded.
He then came by with boxes for our leftovers and threw the plastic bags on the edge of the table where they slid to the floor.
Our waiter was ok.
The restaurant is still beautiful and has retained its charm. I just hope the food and service come back to its former luster as well so that the entire experience is what it used to be.
Very glad to have the Oyster Bar open again. It’s a New York treasure.
I arrived early for my 8:30pm reservation, the latest they now take and found my way in the front door barred by an ill-mannered lout who clearly was not going to let me in unless I had a reservation and seemed disappointed to learn that i did. Then I was told we couldn't eat in the Saloon Room because it was "closed for service." Then when I tried to order a glass of wind during dinner I was told that was impossible because "the bar is closed."
It's sad because the food was as usual excellent and I went almost weekly pre-pandemic. But until this place gets an attitude adjustment and a service ethic I won't be back. A good start would be to fire the "host" who tried to block my way into the restaurant.
By the way this is the first letter of complaint I have ever written about any restaurant.
Pros: Decent soft shell crabs and other food
Cons: Minimal COVID measures (cursory check of vaccination cars, staff not keeping masks on or not on properly, lots of clients NOT eating or drinking without masks, cursory cleaning of tables and tables very close together).
Vegetables overcooked and food simply shoved onto plates
To dine at Grand Central Oyster Bar is always a special experience. The environment makes the whole difference. The service is nice and the food does not disappoint.
The high vaulted ceiling and the bustling ambience of the main room of the Oyster Bar does not disappoint. The vaccination screening and check in procedure were efficient and gracious. The service was excellent, from greeter to waiter to bus-staff.
Have always loved the New England Clam Chowder. Tried something new (to me) this time - the Oyster Pan Fry. My guest had the Cherrystone Clam Pan Fry. Lots of delicious soup for us at this NYC seafood icon.
Bonus: ran into an old high school friend who now resides in Washington State. (Well, after all, it the restaurant IS located in Grand Central Terminal, where it is said that, if you wait long enough, everyone you have ever known will pass by, eventually.)
Genuinely horrible experience. Forgot our oyster orders and the wait service was terrible.
For what is meant to be a NY institution we were surprised at how bad it was.
Worst NY restaurant I have been to in 5 years.
Booked a table in the Saloon for a lunch with old pals. Food was delicious and the staff was great - even though we spent 3 hours catching up.
Great to be back! Excellent food and service. All safety precautions taken. Looking forward to returning!
First time back since the pandemic. Same great place, same great food. Just a significant increase in prices. Still worth it, really excellent.
So glad to have you back!
Great as usual! Seafood tower is excellent!
Classic in NYC.
So great to be back!
Manhattan Clam Chowder was delicious. The Belon oysters were larger than those I've eaten in France. These were from Maine and were superb.
We went on a Monday evening. It was not crowded. The oysters were great.
Glad they reopened but the food was terrible. The oyster po-boy was all bread and no oysters and the oyster stew was flavored well buy had only 4 oysters. Would never return.
It was unfortunate that the Oyster Bar did not deliver on its great reviews.
Our reservation was honored at 6:30 pm. It took around 12 minutes before the waiter took our order. The manager came around to our tables asking how things were going. We told them it has been 37 minutes since the waiter took our order. We told the manager we had an 8 pm engagement we needed to attended. He apologized and presumably went to check on our order. I feel that it probably expedited the oder. Two of the entrees arrived around the 44 minute mark. The 3rd entre arrived at the 48 minute mark.
The shrimp scampi with bucatini and swordfish were underwhelming. The grilled swordfish had some "charred-ness" to it. The rice was mushy. The scampi & bucatini lacked taste. The oysters were quite delicious. The wine never arrived. The waiter was aware of this and did not add wine to the total. We left the restaurant around 7:40 ish.
We saw that surrounding diners were experiencing the same frustration we were facing. During our wait time for dinner, we saw diners searching/hoping their dinner/check/waiter would arrive at their table.
The setting in Grand Central Station is historic and beautiful. It's a cool place to dine! However, the food and service squashed our enthusiasm.
Food was very good. Wait staff were excellent, but kitchen staff were very slow. Waited over 35 minutes for appetizer.
Excellent service, lovely strong martinis and great oyster selection
Been coming to New York since forever and thought I knew about all the really cool NYC restos. Well apparently not. Just tried the this magical gem! The Grand Central Oyster Bar takes you back in time to when Grand Central station was ground zero for the pulse of the city. Go for the architecture but stay for the food! The menu is full of traditional New York Italian style choices and the prices are reasonable. A cooler restaurant with better visuals, fabulous service and good eating won’t be easy to find! Was my first time there, but already can’t wait to get back !
Thrilled that the restaurant is back open- service was expert and perfect, oysters and clams were pristine, martini was cold. Fantastic.
Great as always.
One comes here for the expertly prepared and high quality (i.e., fresh!) fish and seafood and for the historic and nostalgic setting. I was last here with my 89 year old father who remembers coming here with his father. Convenient location in the heart of Grand Central Terminal is an added bonus.
Oyster stew was not what I remembered. Having it numerous times I was disappointed
Amazing oysters! But I had a reservation for 8 and was rushed to leave at 9!
We are thrilled that Oyster Bar is back but the staff was short handed (it is the same story everywhere in NY) and we had to wait a lot for our drinks and oysters.
Oysters & cold beers in the Saloon.
Robert is awesome at taking care of everyone. One of my favorite places in NYC. Thanks again so glad you’re back.
Best waiter ever , Carlos. Actually told us we over tipped ! Food excellent and just the right atmosphere in the Saloon. A wonderful quaint Manhattan iconic place.
