Gran Gusto Ratings and Reviews
Worst restaurant experience of my life. We sat down and tried to flag down a waiter for 30 minutes, and the wait staff simply REFUSED to serve us. The two waiters would look at us and just look away. After 30 minutes of waiting, we left.
Not to mention, the tables were roughly two inches apart from each other.
I go to Gran Gusto regularly so usually have an idea what to expect. But this night they were definitely off their game. Though it was not busy, the service was slow and irregular. We had to call our server over multiple times and even had to ask what the specials were. Since this was a birthday dinner I splurged on a fairly expensive bottle of wine which turned out to be a mistake. The 2009 Brunello had probably not been stored improperly and showed much more age then a Brunello from that year ought to. The tannins were gone and it had none of the rich textured flavors that that region is known for. The Gran Gusto wine list has a number of excellent wines for about $50 (e.g. the Foras Cananau) so I would stick with those.
The food was OK. I ordered the chitarra, which is one of their specialties, pasta prepared at the table in a large round of pecorino. But this time it was more gloppy and grainy than it ought to have been but the flavors were still quite good. My companion ordered the arctic char special, which sounded good when described, but the fish was a bit dry and overall she did not find the flavors much to her liking. I enjoyed the Tiramisu which had an interesting touch of almond extract.
I found Gran Gusto pretty highly rated on Foursquare. We arrived at a quiet time between lunch and dinner. The service was prompt and professional, but not overly friendly. We enjoyed a calamari and two pasta dishes, all of which were served piping hot and fresh. The restaurant offered a quiet warm ambiance with a few locals favoring the window seats. Overall, we had a good experience with satisfying food and service.
Couldn't have had better or more attentive service. Pasta (only thing we had) was good. Wine (chianti) so-so, but that's usually true of chianti. Many other options I will try next time. Good parking in back, although we found one on street. The evening we were there, a Wednesday, it was not crowded and not at all noisy which my friend and I appreciated.
Grangusto always delivers. I am Italian and we are regulars there. The pizza is better than what I could get in many many places in Italy. Appetizers are to die for. Antonio and his team do everything they can to make you feel home in this absolute best-Italian-pizza-in-Boston spot! We just love it.
We LOVE Gran Gusto. This is a friendly neighborhood place. The whole staff is wonderful. The menu is short but seems to only include dishes at which they excel. Our favorite is the "Chitarra"- thick home-made spaghetti served from a large bowl of pure parmesan cheese. This has to be the best way to serve pasta: simple and infused with flavor. Pair it with a meat dish and share. And Gran Gusto has parking - rare in Cambridge.
This is an absolute gem! One of the most authentic Italian restaurant in Boston area. It has such a warm, cozy, and welcoming aspect that makes nostalgic amd feel like I’m in Italy. The food is as authentic as it gets. Number 1 thing everyone should try is their pizza. Anyone that has eaten pizza in Napoli or anywhere in Amalfi Coast will be able to appreciate this place as much as I do! The owner and staff are very welcoming and friendly. Best of all, this isn’t the type of restaurant where everthing feels super rushed so they can turn tables as quickly as possible and this way you definitely get to enjoy the moment and the slow paced European style. Obsessed. A must try.
The owner himself came to the table and greeted us. All of the servers were kind and attentive. The noise level was a little high for my taste - lots of glass, stone and hardwood in a room with high ceilings means lots of sound reflection. But the sound was of happy dining conversations, and the room is lovely,
Even with a reservation we waited for 45 mins in the back of the restaurant of what it seemed to be the building's lobby. It would have been nice to be asked if we would like a drink while waiting.
When seated, they were out of bread and out of the wine we ordered.
Customer service was mediocre/poor. I am Italian (Rome) and I have to say that the food was mediocre as well.
We have been there ~ 4 times since we found it ~ 5 months ago. Never failed to be 4 or 5 on 5 point scale. It seems a bit rustic, there are a few open tables, and it is relatively quiet - not like Guilia's and with at least equal food with higher plate-to plate variety.
We had a wonderful meal! There were so many great things to choose from that we decided to share a bunch. Appetizer special of figs stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in prosciutto served over arugula with balsamic glaze - out of this world delicious! Pizza with roasted eggplant was amazing - light crispy crust. Gran Gusto special pasta was delicious. Favorite was the Short Rib pasta - can't wait to go back again for more! All staff was warm and welcoming and very attentive. You can't go wrong with this place!
Fantastic food, the most authentic Italian outside the North End, as far as I know. The grilled calamari is killer. All the homemade pasta is top notch. They even made up a seafood risotto for me during lunch, when there isn't risotto on the menu. Give them a try, including their excellent margherita pizza and fresh salads.
