Gracias Madre - SF
In an effort to cultivate a shared experience of nourishment through food and community, all tables at Gracias Madre are sat communally.
We arrived early on a Sunday for brunch and enjoyed a cozy patio spot. Bowl Uno for me was delicious and full of tasty flavors, and spices. We also had yummy plantain French toast, gluten free with cashew cream and maple syrup. We enjoyed lattes with almond/rice milk and chocolate. All a lovely experience. Get there early!
Food was not as good as we hoped, the pozole was not very tasty.
Dinner with friends. Love the food, met nice people!
Gracias Madre is absolutely not a place I'd come back to in San Francisco. To start, the host checking in tables clearly had too many tasks assigned to them and needed additional support—they were checking people in, checking reservations, taking people to their tables, and also helping to clear and set up tables. That's way too much for a restaurant the size of Gracias Madre, and left the host clearly overworked and the restaurant with a long and slow line. Additionally, there was someone outside of the restaurant asking for food and money. This person was in no way situated on the restaurant property, and was not physically or verbally harassing any patrons in any way. Despite, restaurant "management" came outside and got aggressive with this person, asking them to leave in a near-yelling voice. I thought that was both irresponsible and unwarranted—it would have been much easier to just give the person what they wanted; food.
Finally, on the topic of food, Gracia's Madre's food was actually just horrible—a half step up from Chipotle with store bought margarita mix. The bowls that Gracias Madre is "famous" for are quite literally the same as what one would get at Chipotle or another fast food restaurant—beans on top of romaine and rice. That the food took about 5 minutes to be delivered to our table after ordering tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the food—it's not freshly made, unoriginal, and quite frankly, not worth the price.
Great vegan organic Mexican food. If you need it, you need it!
Always great food and we had an excellent server, Connor I believe. He worked really hard to help my wife with her many food restrictions. I had a special, a tamale with mole sauce - amazing. A pure watermelon juice to drink-delicious. She had cauliflower tacos that were pretty spicy and tasty. Being located in the Mission District May turn off some, but I’ve never had any issues parking or walking around. But I’m fine with street people and homeless, vendors selling their wares, etc. It’s hard to find anything matching vegan Mexican like GM.
Dinner for four, never a let down. We always reserve Gracias Madre for special occasions.
Everything was great, but way too noisy at times in the outside area... Might be nice if there were sound barriers on either side of the front gate. Just a thought. I hope that’s helpful.
Nice to have vegetarian menu selections. Food was fresh.
The food was great. We’re just annoyed they didn’t check us in on open table when we arrived and we received a notice saying we missed our reservation. I really don’t like that.
Location isn’t great, wait staff was pleasant but definitely wanted us to speed up our eating/drinking. Portions are great for value but too big given the flavors.
This place is heaven for a vegetarian.....or a human! The flavors are on point, so rich and flavorful. In LOvE! We will be back!
Friday early lunch so it was pretty empty and thankfully quiet.
Food ( torta and 'BLT' wrap) were so fresh and delicious...recipes and quality of
ingredients I can usually only have at home. At last...a restaurant I can feel good
Service was just right.
A great choice for those wishing to eat WFPBD!
Wonderful. Quick seating outdoor for our pup. Food came fast and was delicious.
Great food, very interesting & creative combinations. The only downside to this place is the huge homeless encampment just steps away from the door.
The food has always been amazing (and thankfully still is), but the service seems to be declining. This visit was the first time I've ever had a server at this (formerly?) wonderful restaurant be rude to me. It was disappointing.
Pozole a rare treat, strawberry rhubarb pie topped with cinnamon ice cream just a dream. One needs not be a vegetarian to enjoy this wonderful shop.
Really great vegan food and drinks. Super friendly staff. Will be back again soon!
It was great!
Hostess was really nice and sat us right away but server didn’t seem too attentive, it was pretty busy so we understand but mostly I am upset at the fact that our night ended with the manager causing an embarrassingly unnecessary argument with us about paying with American Express. I understand that some businesses choose to not accept American Express due to the extra cost percentage charges but as someone that has worked in the industry for years I know how it works and he could’ve made an exception due to the circumstances as we were traveling for work and only had our work credit cards with us which happen to be American Express. Instead he decided to argue with us for about 10 min instead of trying to fix the issue at hand and even went as far as trying to accuse us of ‘dining and dashing’ which was absolutely not the case, I even offered on multiple occasions to charge us the extra percentage that they would incur but he refused. In the end he found a solution and apologized, however, I feel like that entire situation could’ve been avoided by having a knowledgeable manager on staff at all times. Needless to say i will NEVER step foot in another one of their establishments again.
Service was slow. Chairs are hard. Food is okay. It took forever to get our order. Even though there are not too many people, waiter asked us to come close so the table can be shared
The most delicious vegan options ... but you have to be prepared being in the "hood" which is scary!
I was excited at the thought of vegan Mexican food (I am from Mexico City ) but was disappointed. I had the bowl 2 and my friend hav the enchiladas. The salsas they made there were watery and didn’t taste like simple and elegant Mexican salsas. They suffered from use every spice in the rack syndrome. Ambiance was great however and the service fantastic! I will go back and try other things hopefully they get better at salsa making
I can no longer have dairy or egg. It was so nice to go to a restaurant with food that tastes great and I can eat everything there! It was so delicious!
Great brunch spot, especially if you can snag a spot outside. Vegan cuisine, but as a meat eater I still love this place. Highly recommend
This place is amazing! I’m vegan but even if you’re not, the food is some of the best you’ll ever have. For a vegan, it was pure heaven. With everything plant-based, there was no need to special order or “tweak” dishes and consequently change flavors to make it suitable. And no settling for boring hummus plate or garden salad either. Gracias Madre would be a weekly routine if I lived closer.
I and my husband aren't vegan or vegetarians but our family dinner guests were. Nevertheless we loved the food. Very tasty, fresh and well prepared. We enjoyed it.
Great evening with a friend!
Excellent service and food! Lots of GF options. Excellent Margaritas 👌🏼
Service was poor. Food was not authentic. Chef was not accommodating. Will not return.
We really enjoyed our Father's Day dinner at Gracias Madre.
The food was delicious and wholesome.
We enjoyed our recent meal at Gracias Madre very much. Our server was friendly and helpful. The food was very good and the restaurant wasn't as crowded as we thought it might be. We were seated in a timely manner and everyone was pleasant and helpful. We will be back!
Staff always excellent and very attentive to dietary - celiac - issues!
I brought my boyfriend here for a special date night and the receptionist was super rude! I believe her name was Mulally. I gave her my name and told her we had a reservation outside at 6:15. She told me no tables were available but I could sit at the bar or inside. We were willing to wait for a table outside but when I asked how long it would be to wait for a table outside - I was told I would only be sat at the community table and my choices were the bar or inside. We sat at the bar. Our wait person at the bar was awesome and nice but I am not going to lie- the evening was pretty much a bust. We couldn’t shake how rude Mulally was . I go to Gracias Madre often and love brunch but it is definitely going to be awhile before I go back. Good food doesn’t trump nasty treatment.
We had to share a table and where were were first seated near the door chilled us every time the door opened, but after we moved, everything was excellent. The food was so good this carnivore forgot that he was eating vegan.
Wrote in opentable reservation for outdoor table and that it was our anniversary, neither was acknowledged when we arrived or during the meal. Our service was terrible....times between acknowledging us, ordering drinks, waiting for drinks, to food, and for the check was not normal. He preferred chatting with other wait staff and at one point seemed to “disappear.” I’ve worked in customer service for 15 years so I’m very observant and pay attention to details. Food was very average for the price. I’ve had wayyy better food at other vegan/plant based restaurants and the drinks were disappointing for 15 bucs each. Again, for the “attention to plant based ingredients” and the like the drink tasted like a pre-mix drink. The positive of the experience is the ambience, it’s a beautiful restaurant, but that’s about it.
Nice service. Food is fine but not great. Pretty interior space but not that comfortable.
Why mess with the concept of Mexican food? Over fussy options
Portions small but tasty
