About Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world.
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

Gotham Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I brought guests to the Gotham Bar and Grill a few years ago. We were impressed with the food but the ambience, the service and the experience were less than stellar. We decided to return with my brother and sister in law on Saturday because any establishment can have an off night...and after all, the food was excellent.
What a difference this visit was! We were seated in a different section of the restaurant with no foot traffic. From the time we entered to the time we left the Maitre d’, wait staff and the wait staff captain made us feel as if we were invited guests to their eatery. They were attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable, engaging, and personable. The food, oh the food was a gourmet’s delight. The flavors infused in the mushroom risotto was so good that 3 of us who ordered it ceased eating it with our forks and utilized the spoons they smartly provided, in order to savor everything that was in our respective bowls. The three different entrees the four of us ordered; Roast Niman Ranch Pork; Maine Lobster and 28 Day Dry Aged New York Steak were equally delectable. There’s no doubt we will return to this enchanting establishment in the very near future.
Our table was reserved for 6:30 and after insisting we got it 70min later.
Food was extremely heavy on garlic and due to the poor light the cloves of garlic were hard to spot in the sauce.
Noisy but a special atmosphere. Nice bar staff. The rest worked like machines. Heartless and success spoiled.
Was there for my birthday, had an amazing dinner. Gotham is my favorite restaurant in the city for the reason of you get the whole package. Our waiter Dom made the entire night amazingly pleasant and was a joy to talk to really made our night special thank you Dom and the entire team at Gotham!
The interior of Gotham Bar and Grill is immediately impressive. Old world decadence in an inviting space. Service and atmosphere deserve five stars, no doubt.
While I would have loved to try multiple courses, my date and I were on a time crunch, so we shared a first course and each had a main. The Hudson Valley foie gras was seared and presented beautifully, but the flavors were lacking. It tasted far too fatty, almost like gristle, compared to other identical dishes at similar restaurants. We always order this dish when we’re out. I give it a D+.
For my main, I had the salmon, and loved the attempt at mixing flavors. The sauce was phenomenal, and temperature of the meat just perfect. Presentation needed some work, but the flavors were there. I’m not quite sure how to express why, but despite the above, I wasn’t wowed by the dish. Individually, the elements on the plate were phenomenal, but together, it was like a failed marriage between people who look like it should have worked.
We will most likely be returning at some point to test the other famous dishes, but I’m in no rush.
We had a very relaxing time at this place food was good and wine list offers agood selection , price range is perfect and the location is a good one , dessert could be maybe wider range of options , but that could be because i have a sweet tooth and so Iam always looking forward to being fabergasted by new flavours. the rest a ver correct and decent place. SERVICE WERE REALLY FRIENDLY AND QUICK TO BRING FOOD AND THE CHECK
We had a wonderful experience at the Gotham Bar and Grill! Our server, Garin was nothing short of fantastic. He expertly guided us through Gotham's food and wine menus and and our resulting pairings were on the mark. My wife opted for the Black Cod and it was delectable. I selected the Duck Breast and it was by far the best duck preparation that I have ever had. Our daughter chose the Pumpkin Tortellini and she loved it. All three dishes were seasoned and prepared to perfection. Garin was very knowledgable of Gotham's wine program (and wine in general). We enjoyed sharing our tasting experiences with him...His 1948 Château Margaux tasting story was great. Thank you for the Tokaj! It was an extraordinary way to conclude our meal (in addition to the Chocolate Cake)!
We have been eating at Gotham Bar and Grill for many many years and it never disappoints. The food is always excellent (the three course lunch prix fixe with moderately priced bottles of wine is especially welcome) and the service friendly and spot on but not obtrusive. The noise level makes dining with friends a pleasure as conversations can go on without yelling across the table. As I said to my lunch companions, can't we eat lunch here EVERY day! Bravo GBG - here's to many more years of the utmost in civilized dining.
We spent Christmas Eve here and we really loved it! They had a super wide wine list and a good tasting menu. Everything was delicious.
The attention was truly amazing, out waiter was a sweetheart!
The only negative thing I can say about this place is that it’s a little overpriced... as good as the food was, we had a soup, a salad, and a piece of meat, and a risotto; that was it... I must say I was a bit impressed when the check arrived.
Maybe it was because of the tasting menu, but still, make sure to check the prices before you sit down.
It’s a good restaurant - not the greatest but very good. Don’t book a table for 12 as you can end up standing around for 10/15 minutes as they slowly seat everyone who has arrived and are waiting in the entrance. Not best start to your dining experience. Attentive service at tables and good wine menu.
We absolutely love this place. The food is so good there. We always make a point to dine there whenever we are in town. Joseph Scherer, the maitre d did everything possible to make our experience there perfect. A big thank you to the whole staff. We will be back
Our meal was outstanding. My guests had Halibut and I split the special aged rib steak and a few of us had the tuna tartar, and one guest had the souffle which they claimed, the best they had ever had. Our group included 2 foodies and a chef and every plate was eaten clean!
I have been to Gotham Bar and Grill a number of times in the past (mostly with family members), and all of my experiences were excellent - until this one. I was hoping to show my girlfriend, who had never been to Gotham, how great the food and service are. She is Vegan, so can not eat most of the items on the lunch menu. A while back, I read an interview with Gotham head chef Alfred Portale, in which he recommended that diners with special requests or dietary restrictions call the restaurant in advance, in order to give them enough notice, so that they can prepare adequately for such cases. Knowing about my girlfriend's dietary needs, I wrote a note in my Open Table reservation to make sure the restaurant knew she is Vegan. In addition to this, I called Gotham two days in advance to confirm that this note had been received. When we arrived for lunch the other day, our waiter appeared to be caught off guard by the fact that one of us was Vegan. After telling us that he had "just seen the note" and consulting the chef, he was able to propose "some of the salads" and "mixed vegetables" as the Vegan options for my girlfriend's lunch. She ended up ordering the vegetable plate, which - while tasty and nicely-presented, was not what I would have expected from such a classy and well-known establishment as Gotham. My food (I had the three course prix fixe lunch) was wonderful, I am sure, but quite honestly, I could not enjoy it as I had hoped, while my girlfriend was eating something which basically amounted to a plate of sides. The most disappointing thing about the whole experience was that I was left with the feeling that we were not taken seriously as guests; I had followed Gotham's own chef's advice, and given the restaurant ample notice about my girlfriend's Vegan eating habits, and yet my feeling was that, if we had showed up at the restaurant, and told them "on the spot," we would have been offered exactly the same fare. Disappointing.
Very sad how this restaurant and chef have lost their touch. at best: airport food and a very boring repetitive menu. this is the chef who writes books on seasonal menus and ingredients... Portale: please wake up! I used to love your place and way of thinking recipes.
